About the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division

The United States Secret Service Uniformed Division protects the White House Complex. Since 1970, the Uniformed Division has also been responsible for protecting foreign embassies and consulates in and around the Washington, DC Area. The Force is comprised of 1,400 officers assigned to the Uniformed Division. The Uniformed Division consists of 5 functional branches to support its mission and objectives. These branches include: Foreign Missions, Special Operations, White House Branch, Office of the Chief, and the Naval Observatory Branch.

Job SummaryThe Chief is the highest-ranking member of the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division police force. Uniformed Division personnel assure the protection of the President, Vice President, their families, designated embassies, and other specified Federal property at all times. The Uniformed Division works under the operational direction of the Assistant Director for Protective Operations.

At the direction of the Assistant Director Protective Operations, the Chief plans, directs and supervises the work of uniformed, specialists, technical and support employees engaged in carrying out the mission and function of the Uniformed Division.

Duties and Responsibilities

Serving within the Office of Protective Operations, the Chief:

• Manages the programs, operations and activities of the Uniformed Division to ensure proper and necessary protection is afforded the President, Vice President, their families, designated embassies, and other designated federal property;

• Represents the agency in the issuance of permanent and temporary memoranda setting forth authority, responsibility and the duties of the various ranks, grades and positions established with the organization;

• Performs long-and short-range planning and development of Uniformed Division programs and operations;

• Prepares periodic reports for the Assistant Director concerning the activities and conditions of the force;

• Maintains liaison with the law enforcement community and other divisions of the United States Secret Service to establish interdivision work procedures and methods ensuring efficient and effective mission accomplishment;

• Ensures enforcement of the laws, statutes, and ordinances of the United States and of the District of Columbia by all subordinate employees;

• Enforces mandated protective responsibilities as described under Title 18, United States Code, Section 3056A;

• Responds either directly or through designated representative, to emergencies on a 24-hour/7-day a week basis

• Coordinates with the Office of Training to develop and implement training programs for Uniformed Division personnel; and

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

• You will be required to:

• Be a U.S. citizen.

• Possess a current valid driver’s license.

• Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.

• Disclose any prior drug use, attempted use, and/or experimentation.

• Carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm proficiency is also mandatory. You will be ineligible to occupy this position if at any time you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, unless you received a pardon or your conviction was expunged or set aside.

• Certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so, if you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959.

• Obtain and maintain a top secret clearance. Completion of a single scope background investigation is required before appointment.

Qualification and Evaluation

You qualify for the Chief positon if you possess one year of specialized experience performing duties such as: providing supervision, leadership and program direction to a law enforcement unit/agency/command; enforcing county, state and federal laws, statues and ordnances; communicating with high-ranking law enforcement and government officials in a variety of situations; and maintaining liaison with sworn law enforcement community members to establish work procedures and methods to enhance mission accomplishment.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.

Compensation and Benefits

The United States Secret Service (USSS) offers a comprehensive salary and benefits package to its employees. The Chief position is $161,900 in the Office of Protective Operations, Uniformed Division. Types of benefits offered by the USSS include the following:
