Our New Brand Promise: Connecting America Through Coins

Over the past year, we set out to explore the identity of the United States Mint: to step out of our routine and look with fresh eyes at who we are and what we represent. What was discovered-or should we say, rediscovered-truly inspired us.

Over the past year, we set out to explore the identity of the United States Mint: to step out of our routine and look with fresh eyes at who we are and what we represent. What was discovered-or should we say, rediscovered-truly inspired us. It was not something new that we found, but something that had been there all along. What makes the United States Mint unique is our ability to connect people-to one another and to the spirit of our nation-through our coins and medals. It was from this rediscovery that we defined our promise to the American public: "Connecting America through Coins.•

Since our institution's founding in 1792, the men and women of the United States Mint have taken great pride in rendering the story of our nation in enduring examples of numismatic art. To hold a coin or medal produced by the United States Mint is to connect to the founding principles of our nation and the makings of our economy. Here and abroad, people continue to cherish our products because they are stores of value as well as exquisite encapsulations of America's ideals. In forms designed to be passed from hand to hand and saved from generation to generation, the coins we mint renect our shared history and traditions. Whether it is learning to count with pennies, discovering the riches deposited under a pillow by the tooth fairy, understanding the value of saving through the weight of a piggy bank, admiring a brother or sister's coin collection, remembering the coin toss at our first football game, or just sharing a moment with a loved one at a wishing well, coins connect us to many of our fondest memories.

Defining our promise-"Connecting Amerira through Colns"-led us to see the opportunities that lay in modernizing the ways we represent ourselves. In the coming months, we will begin to implement a cohesive visual identity system-including a new logo-which will be used on all our packaging and communication products, including a redesigned Intranet site. Developing and maintaining a consistent system of visual and verbal expression will help us proclaim our unique role as the country's sole official mint. By allowing us to function more cohesively as an organization, our evolved identity will help to enhance our operational efficiencies, to redouble our commitment to artistic excellence in design, production, and packaging, and to drive sales of American coins and medals within our country and to the world's numismatic communities.

"Connecting America through Coins• defines, motivates, and unites us as an institution and links the best of what we have always done to the best of what we can be in the future. We will continue to connect people nationwide to our shared heritage and values, as well as to one another, by forging the American spirit onto our nation's coins and medals. As we move forward with the art we create, the coins we mint and the programs we develop for marketing them, let us commit to support our promise to the public, for only together can we help realize its full potential. Our products are not only the lifeblood of commerce and exchange: they are the pocket treasures of the American people.

The New Mint Logo

The· United States Mint logo is the visual representation of our promise: Connecting America through Coins. The logo is made up of two parts : The coin symbol and the United States Mint wordmark.

The coin symbol, Hipping in the air, possesses an optimistic spirit that is symbolic not only of core American values but also of the everyday commerce of our country. The craft and detail of the logo embody the artistic excellence that we strive for in everything we produce. The stars and stripes symbolize our connection to the fabric of our nation and our origins in the American Constitution. The six stars represent the six locations of the United States Mint as well as the six circulating coins we create . E Pluribus Unum, •out of many, one," originating on the seal ot the United States ot Amerlca,is on every circulating coin and directly expresses the idea of Connecting America .

The United States Mint wordmark is our legal, organizational, and communicative name. Our name clearly states who we are and what we do.

These two elements, along with the Department ot the Treasury seal, which will normally be placed adjacent to out logo, work together to exemplify our promise and distinguish us from everyone else.

Gold coins have been part of our currency since the earliest days of the United States Mint. In 1933, gold was taken out of circulation. President Roosevelt decreed that no one was allowed to own gold. Exceptions were made for jewelry, dentistry, tools and coin collecting. This national wealth needed a storehouse where it could be kept safely, and the idea of a national bullion depository was born. In 1936, a special depository was built in Fort Knox to safeguard large quantities of gold for the United States for commerce and strategic reasons.

Fort Knox, a military base in Kentucky, provided a secure and central location. The Department of the Army deeded the land to the Treasury Department on which to build the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox. In fact, "Fort Knox" is known all over the world as a symbol of the security of America's wealth.

The first gold arrived at the United States Bullion Depository in early 1937. How did it get there? By maill The gold was too heavy to fly in, so it was mailed there by train through the Post Office Department, today's United States Postal Service. Transported as mail, the gold was guarded by federal agents all the way to its new home. Fort Knox is protected by the United States Mint Police.

Today about half of the Treasury's stored gold (as well as valuables of other federal agencies) is kept at Fort Knox. No visitors are allowed in or near the

Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin

Throughout history, women have made significant contributions and accomplishments in society. One in particular, Susan B. Anthony, advocated for women's suffrage and bravely fought for women to have the right to vote.

In honor of her contributions, Anthony's likeness graced the obverse of the 1979 dollar coin, representing the first time a women, other than a mythical figure would appear on circulating coinage. The coin's reverse depicted an American eagle landing on the Moon, a design similar to that used on the Eisenhower dollar.

Franklin Half Dollar

Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston, Massachusetts. One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, Franklin was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. His many accomplishments include organizing our country's first lending library and volunteer fire department, helping to draft the Declaration of Independence and the U.S Constitution, and negotiating the 1783 Treaty of Paris, which facilitated the end of the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Franklin spent the majority of his life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is buried across the street from the Philadelphia Mint.

Ellen McCullom

Plant Manager, West Point Mint

As Plant Manager of the West Point Mint, Ellen is responsible for all activities of this facility, including the manufacturing of Gold, Silver and Platinum numismatic and bullion coins. In addition, she is responsible for overseeing all Treasury assets stored within the West Point Mint Facility. Ms. McCullom began her career with the U.S. Mint at West Point, formerly known as the U.S. Bullion Depository, in 1975. In addition to working at the West Point facility, she has also served the U.S. Mint by working at the New York Assay Office and at the U.S. Mint Headquarters in Washington, DC.

She has served in various areas within the Mint such as Contracting, Quality Control, Administration, Production, and in 2000 she assumed the position of Plant Manager.
