FROM THE DUGOUT With Edwin Stein
Good afternoon everyone and a very warm welcome to Brendon King, his management team, players and supporters from Weymouth who have made the trip to the Spencer Stadium for this Southern League Premier Division game. I was very disappointed with
the result and our performance at Arlesey on Tuesday evening. We had a great win at Biggleswade last Saturday which followed up our victory over Conference side Nuneaton Town on the Tuesday. However, a number of players failed to perform and that cost us dearly. Arlesey are not a good side and it is a game that we should have won but some of our players underestimated them and their approach to
the game was not right or professional enough. Not for the first time this season this has cost us league points. If we want to make the play-offs we have to beat times like Arlesey. I have kept the team virtually unchanged in recent games but I feel a number of the players let the club and me down on Tuesday.
Squadwise Leigh Bedwell has had to return to Swindon due to his maximum allowed period of short term loans to one club in a season having been reached. Leigh did exceptionally well for us and in my view has a bright future in the game. I am though delighted that we have managed to get Dean Snedker on a month’s loan
from Northampton Town. He is a young goalkeeper who is highly rated by Northampton and having just had three months experience at our level of football on loan with Carshalton Athletic I am sure he can do a good job for us and at the same time the experience will help his development. Please make Dean most welcome to the Spencer Stadium. Today we face Weymouth
who though they have had some disappointing results recently will I am sure provide us with a stiff challenge. They are still one of the big names of non-league football and I remember some big games in front of large crowds against them from my time at Barnet. They continue to
receive excellent support both home and away and I am sure it will be a good atmosphere here today, it is up to our players to respond to that.
As these are my last set of programme notes before the start of the festive season, on behalf of the football management team and the players I would like to wish all supporters a Merry Christmas. We hope to see a number of you at the three difficult away games that we have upcoming over the next two weeks but if not then back here two weeks time for the Burnham game.
Enjoy the game Edwin

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
Firstly, I would like to
welcome everyone to this
afternoon’s Southern League
Premier Division game
against Weymouth and hope
all those who have travelled
up from Dorset enjoy their
short stay at the Spencer
Stadium and have a safe
journey home
Weymouth have been through
difficult times in recent
seasons with financial
problems much to the fore but
it is good to see that a club
with such a proud history at
the top level of non-league
football seems now to have
stabilised itself. Certainly
with support at the Wessex
Stadium averaging 569, the
highest in the Southern
League Premier Division by
some way, there must be
potential to climb back up the
non-league pyramid in the not
too distant future.
Having said that though, it is
probably fair to say that the
season so far for the Terras
has not gone as well as they
might have expected. They
arrive at the Spencer Stadium
today in the bottom half of the
table and having lost their last
three league games, including
a 7-0 hammering at
Stourbridge and a 3-0 home
defeat to St Albans City.
Nevertheless as we know only
too well from recent home
games, it doesn’t seem to
matter where a team is in the
table, there are no easy games
in this league.
As for ourselves we seem to be
having a touch of the
inconsistency blues. After a
very poor performance in our
last home league game against
St Neots Town we then went
and beat a strong Nuneaton
Town side in the Birmingham
Senior Cup and followed that
up by gaining three valuable
league points at Biggleswade
before going down at Arlesey
on Tuesday night.
After today’s game the
Banbury United Grand
Christmas Draw will take
place in the small bar in the
Clubhouse. There are some
super prizes and you can still
buy your tickets this
afternoon from Cindy
Donaldson or from behind the
bar in the Clubhouse. There is
50p off beer and spirits after
the game at the small bar so
why not take advantage of
that and stay behind after the
game to see if you are a lucky
winner.
On the fixture front we are
next back here at the Spencer
Stadium two weeks today,
that is Saturday 28th
December when Burnham are
the visitors for a league game.
Prior to that we embark on a
run of three away games, all
for league points, Corby
Town this coming
Wednesday, Chesham United
next Saturday and Hemel
Hempstead Town on Boxing
Day. Finally note we are at
home on New Year’s Day to
Stourbridge. All our holiday
games kick-off at the usual
time of 3.00pm.

SPENCER STADIUM GROUND PLAN
History of Weymouth Football Club
Weymouth Football Club were founded on 26
August 1890 following a meeting at Cook's
Assembly Rooms in the town, as an amateur club.
They are nicknamed 'The Terras' - something that
seems to have started in the mid 1890s - which is
due to the strip they wore, terracotta and blue
quarters.
Through the early years the club slowly but surely
rose in stature taking a number of trophies and
league titles along the way. The club were founder
members of the Dorset League (in 1896-1897)
before joining the Western League (in 1907-1908).
They continued playing in both the Western League
and Dorset League until the outbreak of the Great
War. At this time the club closed down and there
was no football at the Rec. until 1919.
On reforming, in 1919-1920, Weymouth entered the
Dorset League until, in 1921-1922, they again joined
the Western League. As in the pre-war years they
continued to field the senior team in both
competitions. Then, after winning the Western
League Championship in 1922-23, they attained
membership of the Western Section of the Southern
League. After initial success the interest started to
wane and attendances fell to such an extent that by
1928 the committee of the club gave up the ghost
and withdrew from the Southern League to re-join
the Western League.
During the 1930s Weymouth became a power in
Western League circles winning a number of
championships. The Second World War saw an end
to football in Weymouth as the Recreation Ground
was requisitioned for the War effort. A hard working
committee brought the dilapidated ground up to
scratch by 1947 and the club reformed - on a semi-
professional basis to start from scratch in Division
Two of the Western League and were runners-up in
the 1947-48 season.
The following season, Weymouth finished third in
the First Division and gained admittance to the
Southern League. This time Weymouth retained
Southern League membership until the club became
founder members of the Alliance Premier League
(now the Conference) in 1979-80. In successive
seasons 1964-65 and 1965-66, Weymouth were
Southern League champions, and they share with
Telford United and Yeovil Town the distinction of
playing all twenty seasons in the Premier Division
prior to the re-organization of the league structure at
that time.
A move from the club's town centre ground to the
new Wessex Stadium in 1987 brought initial success,
but the club entered a slump after relegation from the
Conference at the end of season 1988-89, see-sawing
between the Premier and Southern Divisions of the
Southern League.
However, after finishing runners up in the Southern
League Premier in 2003-04, Weymouth began the
following season in the newly formed Conference
South. The club then won automatic promotion to
the Conference National Division at the end of
season 2005-06 and finished 11th in the top tier of
non-league football in 2006-07 but at a heavy price
with large loans to meet soaring wage bills and at the
end of season 2008-09 Weymouth were relegated.
October 2009 saw Weymouth go into administration
with a CVA being accepted in March 2010 saving
the club from extinction. However, at the end of the
2009-10 season Weymouth would be relegated for
the second year in succession. Season 2010-2011
saw Weymouth playing in the Southern League and
the club just avoided a third successive relegation,
finishing one place above the drop zone. Season
2011-12 the club flirted with relegation once more
but eventually finished in 17th place. Last season the
club finished in 9th place.

Match Report
Banbury United 1 Nuneaton Town 0 Birmingham Senior Cup Second Round – Tuesday 3rd December 2013
United advanced into the
Birmingham Senior Cup quarter-
finals with a 1-0 win over
Conference National side
Nuneaton Town at the Spencer
Stadium.
United began the game well and
went in front in the 15th minute
when good work by Kynan Isaac
down the right saw him cross into
the centre where Adeyinka Talabi
knocked the ball home at the far
post.
Banbury had the better of the
game for the rest of the half.
Whilst Leigh Bedwell in the
Banbury goal was not seriously
threatened, Banbury too struggled
to create clear cut chances though
they continued to look more likely
to increase their lead than the
Conference high-flyers to equalise.
Nuneaton improved at the start of
the second half and were soon
dominating possession and asking
questions of the Banbury defence.
On 56 minutes a James Armson
free-kick from a central position
just outside the penalty area went
just over the bar. Nuneaton
continued to press and look for the
equaliser, creating a number of
half chances which were not taken
though Banbury still looked
dangerous on the counter-attack.
On 73 minutes Bedwell produced
the save of the night from a
Wesley York strike from just
inside the penalty area on the right
to keep United ahead.
Four minutes later Dominic
Lawless was fouled in a central
position just outside the penalty
area. Scott Bridges took the free-
kick but it went just over the bar.
The last ten minutes were rather
more comfortable for Banbury
than might have been expected
and they nearly got a second three
minutes from time when James
Belshaw did well to push a goal-
bound Scott Bridges free-kick,
from a central position just outside
the penalty area, around the post
for a corner.

Previous Encounters - Banbury United and Weymouth
Prior to season 2010/11, the
clubs had never met in any
competition. The last three
seasons have though seen six
league games between the sides,
with four wins for Weymouth
and two for Banbury.
The first game was at the
Wessex Stadium on Saturday 4th
December 2010. Banbury got off
to the best of starts when in the
third minute Joe Coleman
converted a penalty after Marvin
Martin’s goal-bound shot was
handled by Oliver Tribe who
was sent off. Banbury doubled
their lead in the 14th minute
when David Staff cut in from the
left wing and unleashed an
unstoppable right-foot shot from
22 yards. Banbury made it three
in the 35th minute when
Coleman went on a mazy run
which culminated in a 20 yard
shot which sped into the far
corner of the net. Six minutes
into the second-half and it was 4-
0 when Martin scored from the
edge of the six yard box.
Weymouth pulled a goal back in
the 53rd minute when Alex
Holloran netted from close range
and he scored a second five
minutes from time to make the
final score 4-2 to Banbury.
At the beginning of March,
Banbury completed the double
over Weymouth, winning 3-0 at
the Spencer Stadium. United
went in front after ten minutes
through a Robbie Maddox
penalty and then a minute before
the interval doubled their
advantage when a cross from
Declan Benjamin found an
unmarked Jack Ashton who side-
footed the ball into an empty net.
United made it 3-0 in the 56th
minute when Henry Rose latched
on to an inch-perfect pass over
the last defender by David Stone
and he nonchalantly lifted the
ball past Jordan.
In season 2011/12 the game at
the Spencer Stadium was played
first. This took place early in
October with the Terras getting
sweet revenge for their two
defeats of the previous season
with a convincing 5-1 winning
scoreline. Craig Duff headed
Weymouth in front in the 20th
minute before Glenn Walker
equalised on 37 minutes.
However, four minutes later,
Banbury were once more behind
when Duff headed powerfully
home for his second of the game.
The game then went from bad to
worse for Banbury when Sam
Malsom fired in a shot from the
edge of the penalty area in first-
half injury time. Warren Byerley
scored a fourth for Weymouth
nine minutes from time and then
completed the embarrassment for
United in the first minute of
injury time when he got his
second to make it 5-1.
The 2011/12 season game at the
Wessex Stadium, played in
February, saw Weymouth
complete the double over United
with a 2-1 win. This was a game
that only really came to life in
the final 15 minutes. In the 77th
minute, following a corner, the
ball fell to Mark Ford on the
edge of the Banbury penalty area
who drove the ball into the
bottom left hand corner of Andy
Kemp’s net. With just three
minutes left it looked like
Banbury had earned a point
when Liam Dolman, up in the
Weymouth penalty area for a
free-kick, volleyed the ball high
into the net, off the underside of
the bar, from around 10 yards.
However, a minute into stoppage
time Ford struck home his
second goal of the game to give
Weymouth a 2-1 win.
Last season, the game at the
Spencer Stadium was played in
mid-October. United went
behind in the 7th minute when a
left wing cross from the bye-line
was converted at the near post by
Kyle Critchell. Banbury then laid
siege to the Weymouth goal for
the next half-hour but were
caught with a breakaway in the
34th minute and Weymouth
doubled their lead through Ben
Joyce. Two minutes before the
break, Banbury deservedly
pulled a goal back when,
following a goalmouth scramble,
Tom Lorraine smashed home an
Adeyinka Talabi cross.
Weymouth though dominated
the second half and when Joyce
scored his second and
Weymouth’s third goal in the
65th minute, it was “game over”.
At the Wessex Stadium in March
the first half was a forgettable
affair with neither side looking
likely to find a way through and
create a clear opening. The
second half was much more
entertaining. In the 53rd minute a
Ben Polk corner from the right
was headed over the bar by Albi
Skendi. However, it took a
couple of superb saves from
Warren Carter in the Banbury
goal to keep the scores level,
firstly from Sam Poole and then
from Scott Walker. It was
looking as though United were
going to hold out for the point
but they were to be cruelly
denied by a fine strike from Ed
Palmer with just three minutes
left. The ball came out to the
Weymouth player from the
Banbury penalty area and he
struck it from 25 yards into the
bottom corner of the net
Match Report
Arlesey Town 2 Banbury United 1 Southern League Premier Division – Tuesday 10th December 2013
United fought back to equalise with
a goal from Adeyinka Talabi but a
Johnny McNamara strike 13 minutes
from time earned Arlesey all three
points.
Arlesey started the better of the two sides, one shot was kicked off the
line by a Banbury defender and
another went just wide of the post
but the half soon developed into a
scrappy, niggly and unpleasant
affair, devoid of any decent football
which was anything but a good
advert for Southern League Premier Division football.
In the 21st minute Adeyinka Talabi
found himself in space just outside
the penalty area but his shot was
blasted well over the bar. This was
the only half chance that Banbury
created in the whole of the first half. The home side fared little better as
the half wore on, with the composure
of players on both sides being lost it
was with some relief that the referee
blew the whistle at half time with a
full contingent of players on the
field!
Though the first half had been awful,
the second period would turn out to
be much more open and entertaining
with both sides at last playing some
football and creating some chances.
In the 48th minute a cross from the left by Banbury’s Adeyinka Talabi
looked dangerous but Dominic
Lawless failed to connect properly at
the near post. A minute later Talabi
blasted the ball high over the bar
from a narrow angle. In the 56th
minute a free-kick to Banbury in a
central position a few yards out from
the penalty area saw Kynan Isaac’s shot tipped onto the crossbar by Jack
Bonham in the Arlesey goal, the ball
then going over for a corner.
However, Arlesey were also looking
better going forward this half and
just a minute later a superb strike
from just outside the penalty area by
former Puritan Joseph N’Guessan flew into the top left hand corner of
the net to put the home side ahead.
Banbury responded well and were
level just six minutes later when a
cross from the right by Isaac fell to
Talabi who fired the ball home from
10 yards. The equaliser gave Banbury much confidence and belief
and they now began to have much
the better of the game.
Just four minutes after drawing level,
United were unlucky when a cross
from Luke Cray on the right went to Talabi whose shot hit the inside of
the post before the ball ran along the
goal line and was cleared.
Though Banbury were in the
ascendency, Arlesey still looked
lively up front and in the 77th minute
they broke quickly from a Banbury attack and substitute Johnny
McNamara found himself through on
goal, and with just debutant
goalkeeper Dean Snedker to beat,
duly did so to make it 2-1 to the
home side.
Banbury pushed forward in search of
a second goal in the final 13 minutes but were unable to find a way
through.
On their second half showing,
Banbury were rather unfortunate to
lose this game. The least said about
the first 45 minutes of this game
served up by the two teams the better!

Banbury United
Goalkeeper Dean Snedker
has joined the Puritans on a
month's loan from
Northampton Town. The 19
year-old has come through
the Northampton Town
youth system, making his
first team debut in a Capital
One Cup game in August
2012 in a 2-1 home win over
Cardiff City. Though yet to make his league debut he
appeared in a further Capital One Cup game and a
Johnstone’s Trophy game last season. He is on contract at
Northampton until 2015 and made his England under 19
debut against Denmark in February 2013.
Dean has been on loan at Isthmian League Premier Division
side Carshalton Athletic since September and played
regularly in their first team but has had to recently return to
Sixfields as his maximum allowed period of short term
loans to them has been reached which is the same situation
as why Leigh Bedwell has had to return to Swindon from
ourselves.
St Neots Town
The Saints have signed striker Simon Thomas
who has played for Canvey Island and Leiston
this season. The 28 year-old joined Crystal
Palace from Boreham Wood in 2008 and though
only making one first team appearance for the
Eagles he did have loan spells and played in the
Football League with Darlington and Rotherham
United. He has also played for Billericay Town,
Grays Athletic and Chesham United.
Hemel Hempstead Town
Hemel Hempstead have signed striker Tom
Berwick from Corby Town. He made a name for
himself as a prolific goalscorer with Daventry
Town in the UCL and progressed to play for
them in the Southern League. He has also played
for Leamington and Redditch United prior to
signing for Corby this past summer.

Supporters Club News
Good afternoon and welcome
to all supporters including those who have made the trip
from Weymouth.
Since my last set of notes we have enjoyed? an inconsistent
period in the league – D, L, W. L – and the Birmingham Senior Cup win over
Nuneaton.
The trip to Bideford saw an impressive Banbury following
of about 20. Add in a coefficient for the distance of
200 miles and it being a Tuesday I think that’s equivalent to 200 supporters
travelling 20 miles on a Saturday! It looked like their
loyalty would be rewarded with a win until a dodgy last
10 minutes which saw us ultimately relieved to travel
home with a point. With three diversions that trip saw the team coach arrive back at 3.15
am. The joys of non-league football and vagaries of
league administrators.
A fortnight ago saw a non-performance and a loss
against St Neots. Our season seems to have been occasionally punctuated by
these matches when we seem to create nothing -
Cirencester, Truro other games that come to mind.
However the Birmingham
Senior Cup game three days later gave us a good chance to get back on track and to my
limited football brain we
certainly matched higher rated
opponents on the night.
Last Saturday saw an excellent win at Biggleswade.
For the old timers it’s sometimes hard to appreciate
how far clubs such as Biggleswade have come up the ranks of the non-league
pyramid. They can’t be seen an upstarts or punching above
their weight and it took a really committed performance
to come away with all three points. I enjoyed filling in for
Stewart Green on Radio Horton and took my duties seriously with a seat in the
stand. However I will enjoy being back on the terraces
again today.
Last Tuesday and with the help of our friends Tex
Coaches about 40 supporters made the awkward trip to Arlesey. This helped boost the
attendance to 83 but our quick return to Bedfordshire did not
see a similar result or performance to Saturday. The
first half saw little football but a lot of physical stuff and
fortunately in the second half a game broke out. Having got back into the game at 1-1
we hit the post and had other chances to score but were
unpicked at the back to end with a really frustrating loss.
We were delighted with the
response to the re-opening of the club shop. We received a number of positive comments
and first day sales were
encouraging. We are now up
to full stock with the arrival of new style club scarves.
Hopefully there is something in the shop for supporters both
young and not so young. Maybe even a Christmas
present! Remember too we are now on
facebook, courtesy of Stewart Green-

Have a great Christmas.

current season here at Banbury United. The
winger has previously played for Blackfields &

Bedford Town
Manager Lee Bearman has signed 19 year-old
forward Elliot Bailey, initially on a month’s loan,
from league rivals St Albans City. Bearman said:
“I needed to bring a forward in as soon as
possible after losing top scorer Andrew Phillips
to Histon. He scored the equaliser against us
earlier in the season and has had limited
opportunities at St Albans due to the quality of
forwards they currently have”. Bailey has come
through the St Albans youth and reserve sides.
Redditch United
Moving to the Valley from Rugby Town is
former Puritan Sam Youngs. The 22 year-old
central midfielder first signed for Valley in
October 2009 from Hemel Hempstead Town,
joining Rugby due to his university studies in
Birmingham. He left Rugby at the end of the
2009/10 season to join Halesowen Town and has
also had spells with Ware and Banbury United
before returning to Rugby in October 2012.
Frome Town
Returning to Badgers Hill is Ricky Hulbert from
Yate Town. This is his fourth spell with Frome
and he has made over 100 appearances for the
club. In between stints at Frome, Hulbert has also
turned out for Bath City, Paulton Rovers and
Larkhall Athletic. He left Frome for a third time
this past summer to join Yate.
Match Report
Biggleswade Town 1 Banbury United 2 Southern League Premier Division – Saturday 7th December 2013
Goals from Adeyinka Talabi and
substitute Leon Simpson in the
88th minute earned United all
three points and moved them up to
sixth place.
This game was the proverbial
"non-event" in the first half but
burst into life early in the second
period.
After a goalless first 45 minutes
United's prospects, at least in
theory, improved four minutes into
the second half when
Biggleswade's Callum Lewis was
shown a straight red for a wild
tackle on Albi Skendi.
It took over four minutes for the
game to resume as there was the
usual mass melee following the
tackle which the referee had to sort
out. However, United were soon in
front when in the 57th minute
Kynan Isaac's in-swinging cross
from the right evaded the nearest
players and though it looked to be
relatively easy for Ian Brown to
collect low down to his right, the
Biggleswade custodian failed to
hold the ball and only succeeded
in knocking it out to the incoming
Adeyinka Talabi at the far post
who had a simple tap-in.
Though a man short Biggleswade
pushed forward and equalised in
the 70th minute when a corner
from the right fell to Brett
Donnelly and though his shot from
eight yards was hacked off the line
by Kyal McNulty, the ball hit
Banbury's Marvin Martin and
rebounded back into the net.
Banbury's winner came in the 88th
minute when another teasing in-
swinging cross from the right by
Isaac was met by the incoming
Leon Simpson whose header from
eight yards flew past Brown into
the top right hand corner of the
net.

Colin Holder in his Coventry City days
Played for Both Banbury United and Weymouth
Colin Holder
Forward Colin Holder began his career as an apprentice at Coventry City
making his Football League debut for them at the age of 17 in an away
Division Three game at Newport County on Monday 20th March 1961.
That game finished in a 3-3 draw and though Colin did not score on his
debut he would get Coventry’s goal five days later in a 2-1 away defeat to
Shrewsbury Town.
Colin would go on to make a total of nine Football League appearances for
Coventry during the two seasons 1960/61 and 1961/62 scoring 4 goals. He
was also loaned out to Lockheed Leamington during the latter season.
He left Highfield Road to join Chelmsford City in the summer of 1963 but
couldn’t settle there and left them by mutual consent in December of that year. Colin then signed for
Weymouth but the move didn’t work out and after only six weeks he joined Nuneaton Borough on loan
and then had a further loan spell, this time at Stourbridge.
After such a traumatic season
he left the game to work for
Butlins as a football coach but
was persuaded to return to
football by Southern League
First Division side Deal Town
for the start of season 1964/65.
However, after just three
months he was transferred to
Premier Division side Margate.
He made 86 appearances for
Margate scoring 25 goals
before the club released him at
the end of season 1965/66.
Colin then joined Cheltenham
Town for season 1966/67 from
whom he joined Banbury
United. He made his debut for
Banbury United in the last
game of the 1966/67 season
that being the second leg of the
Smith Memorial Cup game
away to Oxford City on
Tuesday 16th May 1967.
Obviously his season with
Cheltenham Town was over
and, though the press described
this as a “trial”, he was clearly
being lined up for the following
season.
Played for Both Banbury United and Weymouth
Colin Holder (continued)
Colin did indeed join Banbury United for the start of season 1967/68. He formed a useful partnership up
front with Tony Jacques during a two year spell at Banbury scoring 13 League goals in both seasons.
After making 123 appearances for the club he moved on to Rugby Town and later played for Gloucester
City, Salisbury, Kidderminster Harriers, Burton Albion and Hednesford.
After experience as a manager at Coleshill Town and Armitage he would return to the Spencer Stadium in
December 1989 to manage the club. Despite improved form he was unable to keep United in the Southern
League, a last day home defeat to King’s Lynn confirming the club’s relegation to the Hellenic League.
Colin continued as manager of Banbury United at the start of the club’s first season in the Hellenic
League Premier Division and over 20 years after his last appearance for the club turned out on Tuesday
November 14th 1990, at the age of 46, as a sweeper in a home Daventry Charity Cup game against
Higham Town. He would also name himself as a substitute in a Hellenic League Premier Division game
away to Milton United on December 15th 1990 though he did not bring himself on!
After leaving the manager’s job at Banbury in February 1991 he would later have a four month spell in
charge of then West Midlands League side Willenhall Town before being sacked in March 1992.

Richard Groves
Richard Groves is a midfielder who joined Oxford United in the summer
of 2007 to complete his football scholarship having previously been in the
youth structures at Plymouth Argyle and Torquay United.
He joined Banbury United on loan in November 2008 and made 17
appearances for the club that season, scoring 4 goals. He made his Oxford
United first team debut away to Forest Green Rovers in a Conference
game at the beginning of November 2008 and made a further two
substitute appearances that season, those being his last first team
appearances for the club.
Richard joined Brackley Town on loan at the start of season 2009/10 until told by Oxford United at the
beginning of February 2010 that he was to be released at the end of his scholarship.
He then returned to his home in the West Country and joined Tiverton Town at the end of that month.
Richard signed on non-contract terms for Weymouth prior to the start of season 2010/11 but left them at
the end of February 2011 to join then Southern League Division One side Bideford. He was part of
Bideford’s promotion winning side in season 2011/12 and is still part of their squad this season, playing
for Bideford against Banbury down in Devon last month.

Hinckley United’s record has been expunged
On This Day in Football – December 14th
1925
Liverpool signed Gordon Hodgson who had been a centre-forward with the South African tourists earlier in
the year. He became a Kop idol. 1930-31 was probably his finest season when he not only set the club scoring
record with 36 goals but played for England in all three home internationals. His club record stood until 1962
when Roger Hunt scored 41 Second Division goals. He spent ten years at Anfield scoring 223 goals in 358
League matches before then playing for Aston Villa
1963
Jimmy Greaves scored his 200th goal in League football playing for Tottenham Hotspur at Bolton Wanderers.
He was exactly the same age as Billy Dean was when he reached this milestone: 23 years and 290 days.
Furthermore both were in their seventh season in the game and both had had a short period out of it; Dean due
to injuries sustained in a motor cycle accident and Greaves as a result of his venture into Italian football. All
Greaves's goals were scored in the First Division but 27 of Dean's were scored for Tranmere Rovers in the
Third Division North and the last nine were scored in the Second Division
1994
Vinnie Jones made his Welsh debut against Bulgaria in the European Championships. Wales lost 3-0.

tie. He was at Watford as a youngster.

central defender Dan Preston on a month's loan.
He began his career with Birmingham City, for
whom he made his debut in the Carling Cup in
September 2009, and had a spell on loan with

he made his Football League debut. He joined

the end of the 2010/11 season.

2010/11 season he signed permanently with
Telford and has more recently played for
Worcester City, Boston United and Barrow.
ALL OUR YESTERDAYS
Banbury’s seven match unbeaten run came to an abrupt end on Saturday 13th December 2003 as they went
down 6-1 at Eastleigh in a Southern League Eastern Division game. It was very much a depleted squad for
United as they were without Ollie Stanbridge and Les Robinson through injury. And with Wayne Blossom
still in some discomfort from a minor operation and Paul Eldridge suffering with flu (though both played) it
was always going to be a difficult afternoon. How difficult it was to be though was probably a bit of a surprise as United were 3-0 down within the first
12 minutes after some abject defending and the result was, not surprisingly, never in doubt from that
moment on. Banbury did put a goal back on 66 minutes through George Redknap but any thought of a
comeback was short lived as within 5 minutes the home side had restored their three goal advantage and
then added a couple more to make the final score 6-1. Banbury United Line Up: Simon Tricker, Wayne Blossom, Dean Spriggs, Kieran Sullivan, Jason Allen,
Paul Eldridge, Scott Taylor, David Billington, Mark Simms, George Redknap, Chris Potter. Subs: Andrew
Stidder (on for Taylor) Liam O’Neill (on for Simms), Ryan Breslin (not used), Kevin Brock (not used).
Banbury gained their first Southern League home victory of the season on Saturday 10th December 1983
with a convincing 4-1 victory over bottom of the table Milton Keynes City. It was all over by half time as
the Puritans raced into a 4-0 lead. Manager Phil Lines introduced new signing John Coleman on the wing
and brought in former Alvechurch defender Russell Davies for the first time. United made a bright start and striker Alan McLaren christened his home league debut with the first goal
after only six minutes when the visiting keeper fumbled a right wing cross and the former Manchester
United apprentice moved in swiftly to fire the ball home. Kenny Smith made it 2-0 after 18 minutes,
Coleman netted the third on the half hour mark and then just a minute later Mark Boyland made it 4-0.
Milton Keynes pulled a goal back early in the second half but there was no way back for the visitors after
their first half mauling Banbury United Line Up: Mark Taylor, Bob Stockley, Dave Woodland, Russell Davies, Ian Bowyer, Mike
McFarlane, John Coleman, John Baker, Kenny Smith, Mark Boyland, Alan McLaren. Sub: Wayne
McDowell (on for Smith)
Saturday 16th December 1933 and Spencer Villa were away to Grimsbury in a Banbury Junior League
game. Five consecutive league victories had put Spencer into Championship contention but on this day they
had to settle for a 0-0 draw. The Spencer defence had an outstanding afternoon with Dick Varney in particular playing exceptionally
well at right back and goalkeeper Penrice equal to anything that the Grimsbury forwards could throw at
him. Spencer were fortunate that Grimsbury missed good chances in the first half but dominated the last
twenty minutes though they were unable to find the goal that would have brought them the victory. After
this game Spencer Villa were fourth in the table with 12 points from 8 games played. Mollington were
league leaders with 21 points though Spencer did have 3 games in hand. Spencer Villa Line Up: Penrice, F. J. Varney, Hubert Manning, Archie Bywater, Eric Lowe, Mervyn Laver,
J. Hobbs, Joe Taylor, Geoff Carter, Jack Ballinger, H Hands.
YEARS 10 AGO
YEARS 30 AGO
YEARS 80 AGO
THE early rounds of the FA Trophy proper are never
an easy sell; not for fans who contemplate Christmas
shopping, managers who play weakened sides and
nor for reporters, I have to confess.
You scan the draw for a game where a lower level
team going well in their own division are at home to
a higher level opponent, preferably within easy
travelling distance of home.
Bury Town of the top half of the Ryman Premier at
home to Skrill South title favourites Eastleigh
measured up for me.
But even then I found myself competing with the
festivities, as a pre-match visit to the Blues’ website
told me the huge car park adjacent to Ram Meadow,
that I’d found so useful when I used to go and play
there with Ware, would be rammed because of the
Suffolk town’s Christmas Fayre.
A sign of big players being rested came just before
kick-off with Ian Miller, the Cambridge United
captain, pushing his son Hudson’s buggy around the
perimeter of his old club’s pitch, enjoying a
weekend off while his Abbey team-mates did battle,
successfully, at Salisbury.
By half-time of our game, the chance of an upset had
gone with Ben Strevens doing what he’s done
brilliantly for more than a decade at Barnet,
Crawley, Dagenham & Redbridge, Brentford,
Wycombe and Gillingham by netting two close-
range efforts to start the Spitfires’ flight into round
two.
So what about my headline? Step forward Craig
McAllister, another veteran of the Non-League and
lower Football League circuit, now back with his
first club after serving the likes of Basingstoke –
where I first came up against him as a player –
Stevenage, Woking, Grays, Exeter, Crawley,
Newport and Luton with distinction.
As he made his way off the pitch after the pre-match
warm-up, I said hello and asked how he was?
“Great thanks mate – missus gave birth to our
second at two o’clock this morning, didn’t she?”
came the reply as he made his way down the tunnel.
With that chat in mind as he came on as a half-time
sub, I pondered a goal from the striker who’d been
up all night holding the mother of his baby’s hand,
cuddled the new arrival and maybe grabbed half-an-
hour’s sleep on the coach before celebrating how he
knows best.
Sure enough, the 33-year-old buried Bury further
with a close-range header 11 minutes after joining
the action and the Bebeto cradle celebration was re-
enacted for the 987,546th time since USA ’94!
Afterwards, it got better. Manager Richard Hill told
me that he and eight of the players who’d had
furthest to travel spent the Friday night in a Stansted
hotel. “I offered to drive Macca back to
Southampton in the early hours, but he wanted to
stay and play,” said Hill.
McAllister, whose fiancée Linzi is the daughter of
former Tiverton Town manager, and current
Taunton assistant, Martyn Rogers, explained further.
“I can’t wait to get back and see the little man,” he
said. “It’s a proud day but I had a job to do here, and
having been around football all her life, Linzi
understands. Hopefully she still will when I go to
watch Tottenham-Man United with her old man
tomorrow!”
I’m not sure my wife would have let me get away
with it when our two were due. But at a time of year
when we celebrate birth, I was doing a jig of joy at
little Charlie McAllister’s arrival. ‘Classy Craig Is
The Daddy’ was the headline gift-wrapped for me
by his dad’s devotion…to the beautiful game and the
FA Trophy first round!

The Spencer line up that afternoon was exactly as printed in the programme above. Spencer would win the
game 4-1 with Johnny Redding getting a hat-trick and Trevor Thomas the other goal.
Spencer went on to beat Oxford City in the Third Qualifying Round 3-1 with Redding getting all three
goals and then Yiewsley in the Fourth Qualifying Round 4-0, those goals coming from Harry Ironmonger,
Redding, Kevin Cornwell and Johnny Hicks. Shrewsbury Town beat Spencer 7-1 at Gay Meadow in the
First Round Proper.
Playing for Spencer that afternoon was centre half Roy Warhurst. Roy made 9 Football League
appearances for Sheffield United between seasons 1946/47 and 1949/50 but it was after joining
Birmingham City in March 1950 that he established himself in League football. Whilst at Birmingham he
made a total of 213 Football League appearances and was club captain in season 1956/57. In the summer
of 1957 he moved to Manchester City and later played for Crewe Alexandra and Oldham Athletic. After
making a total of 330 Football League appearances in his football career he then left the full time game at
the end of season 1960/61 to join Banbury. In his two seasons with Spencer he made 74 appearances.

Marlow 1 Banbury United 0 United Ladies looked to be heading for a hard earned point in a goalless draw but were beaten by an 85th
minute long range strike.
Banbury had slightly the better of the opening to the game but it was not until the 25th minute that the first
clear chance of the game came and it would fall to a Marlow forward who broke through on goal and with
a clear opportunity and with just Mel McLeod to beat in the Banbury goal she tried to lift the ball over the
United custodian but McLeod was equal to the effort with a decent save.
However, just a minute later and United were very unlucky not to score when Catherine Howse let fly from
just outside the penalty area, only to see her effort hit the bar and go over. The remainder of the half saw
both teams have periods of pressure but neither were able to create further opportunities.
United began the second half the better and asked a few questions of the Marlow defence. This was a
promising period for United with a free-kick wide on the right pumped into the centre by Zoe Boote ending
with Caroline Shearer knocking the ball just wide and following a series of corners from the right, the final
one saw Boote’s flag-kick fall in a crowded penalty area to Howse but her shot was comfortably dealt with
by the home goalkeeper.
The opening flourish soon faded though and the second half developed into a fairly equal affair but with
both sides struggling to find a way through their opponents’ defences. The game looked destined for a
goalless draw, until five minutes from time when a speculative long range shot from 25 yards flew over
McLeod’s head into the top corner of the net to give Marlow the three points.
Banbury United: Mel McLeod, Rachel Dunbar, Laura Newman, Jenny Hoggins, Lucy Durnin, Alex
Ayckbourn, Zoe Boote, Lacey Walton (Suzy Emms 72), Catherine Howse, Josie Clark (Naomi Norrie 68),

Can we play in the Football League asked Weymouth?
Prior to 1987 there was no automatic promotion into the Football League and clubs wishing to progress had to make applications for election and try to get more votes than the bottom four clubs in the previous season’s Football League. The Football League Chairmen would usually vote for retention of the four bottom clubs (this was referred to by many as the “old pals act”). Despite many non-league clubs having excellent claims and certain Football League clubs having to appeal to their fellow Chairmen for retention of their place year after year it was only very rarely that a non league club would muster more votes than an existing league club and gain election. This article looks at the three attempts made by Weymouth to gain election to the Football League. By the early 1960s, Weymouth were an established and successful Southern League Premier Division side, at this point in time just one step below the Football League. The club had finished third in season 1959/60, then fifth in the next two seasons before gaining another third place in season 1962/63. It was after their third place finish in season 1962/63 that Weymouth, then playing at their town centre Recreation Ground, made their first attempt to join the Football League. The summer of 1963 saw 12 non-league clubs make application for admittance to the Football League but with the four re-election candidates all proving popular with the Football League Chairmen, there were few votes for the non-league clubs. Scarborough were the non-league club to receive most votes but their five votes was way short of the 34 votes received by Hartlepools United, the Football League club that received the least number of
votes of the existing League clubs. Weymouth did though receive one vote! Full voting for 1963: Bradford City 47, Lincoln City 47, Chester 43, Hartlepools United 34 (all four Football League clubs from the previous season being re-elected), Scarborough 5, Gateshead 4, Guildford City 3, Morecambe 2, Romford 2, New Brighton 1, South Shields 1, Wellington Town 1, Weymouth 1, Yeovil Town 1, Bexleyheath and Welling 0, Corby Town 0. The following season (1963/64) Weymouth slipped down to seventh place and it was thus a little surprising that they should make their second attempt to join the Football League. Despite the decline in their league position they did though again receive one vote. This time Wigan Athletic would receive the most votes for a non-league club but their five votes was again well short of what was required. Full voting for 1964: York City 48, Southport 45, Barrow 42, Hartlepools United 36, Wigan Athletic 5, Gateshead 4, Romford 4, Yeovil Town 3, Guildford City 2, New Brighton 2, South Shields 2, Gloucester City 1, Morecambe 1, Weymouth 1, Bexley United 0, Poole Town 0, Scarborough 0. After their seventh place in season 1963/64, Weymouth would then go on to win the Southern League Championship in the next two seasons. It is a mystery as to why Weymouth never used this success to make applications to join the Football League but they did not and after their two Championships the club struggled to emulate that success. Though over the next ten or so years they were never in danger of relegation, they had many mid-table finishes. Rather “out of the blue” and after finishing only 15th in the Southern League Premier
Division in season 1974/75, Weymouth made their third and final attempt to join the Football League. After such a lowly finish the attempt was seemingly doomed to failure and that would indeed be the case, though perhaps rather surprisingly they did receive, once again, one vote. Kettering Town were at the height of the non-league game at this time and received 20 votes only 8 short of Workington who were re-elected with the least number of votes of the re-applying Football League clubs. Full voting for 1975: Swansea City 43, Scunthorpe United 41, Darlington 32, Workington 28, (all four Football League clubs from the previous season being re-elected), Kettering Town 20, Wigan Athletic 8, Yeovil Town 8, Wimbledon 4, Bedford Town 2, Goole Town 2, Northwich Victoria 2, Scarborough 2, Gainsborough Trinity 1, Nuneaton Borough 1, Telford United 1, Weymouth 1, Boston United 0, Chelmsford City 0. Though finishing runners up in the first year of the Conference (1979/80), by this time applications to join the Football League were restricted to just one Alliance club and so Weymouth were not put forward. Champions Altrincham got that opportunity which incidentally would not prove successful. By the time automatic promotion from the Conference started in 1987 Weymouth’s fortunes had declined and they were to be relegated to the Southern League at the end of season 1988/89. Despite a return to the Conference for a three season spell from 2006/07, their subsequent relegations means those dreams of Football League status, not entirely unrealistic back in the mid 1960s, seem rather far away today!
Every Non-League Club’s Dream
Season 1949/50 saw Weymouth finish 9th in the Southern League Premier Division, no mean
achievement in their first season of Southern League football after their election in the summer of 1949.
Weymouth had begun their football after the end of the Second World War in the Western League.
However, it is for the realisation of every non-league football club’s dream of playing away to
Manchester United in the Third Round of the FA Cup that season 1949/50 goes down in Weymouth
history.
Weymouth had to battle through five rounds just to reach the First Round Proper! They beat Totton 6-3 at
the Recreation Ground in the Preliminary Round and this was followed by a 6-2 win at Ryde Sports in the
First Qualifying Round. A 4-0 home win over Poole Town in the Second Qualifying Round and a 5-1
away win at Cowes in the Third Qualifying Round earned them a home game in the Fourth Qualifying
Round against Trowbridge Town. That game finished 3-3 but Weymouth won the replay in Wiltshire 2-1
to earn their place in the First Round Proper.
Weymouth were drawn at home to Football League Division Three South side Aldershot in the First
Round and a crowd of 9,500 saw the game finish 2-2. However, Weymouth would win the replay 3-2.
The draw for the Second Round gave Weymouth a great chance of progressing to join the “big boys” in
Round Three as they were given a home game against fellow Southern League side Hereford United.
Though Hereford took an early lead, Weymouth had turned it around by half time to lead 2-1 and with no
goals after the break that is how the game finished.
The Third Round gave
Weymouth the dream
draw of a trip to Old
Trafford to play First
Division Manchester
United. A crowd of 38,284
were there to see the game
on Saturday 7th January
1950.
The Weymouth part-
timers led by player-
manager Paddy Gallacher,
ex Third Lanark and
Blackburn Rovers gave a
plucky display against
their illustrious opponents
who had eight of their
1948 FA Cup winning
side on the field and

Weymouth did exceptionally well to hold Manchester United for the first half hour but they fell behind in
the 32nd minute when Jack Rowley added the finishing touch to a Delaney centre. Three minutes later
United were further ahead when Stan Pearson intercepted a pass and beat two defenders before slotting
the ball home. At the other end though Johnny Carey cleared off the line when Grant looked like scoring.
In the 51st minute Jimmy Delaney got a third for United and three minutes from time Rowley scored his
second goal to make the final score 4-0.
Despite the scoreline, Weymouth received a tremendous ovation as they left the field. Goalkeeper Bob
Lucas and the Weymouth defence in which Marsden and Ransom were excellent had defended stoutly to
the end.

Travel Advice
Corby Town – Wednesday 18th December Steel Park, Jimmy Kane Way, Rockingham Road, Corby, Northamptonshire, NN17 2FB
The ground is at the northern edge of Corby, just to the east of the A6003 Kettering-Oakham road near its
junction with the A6116 to Weldon. It is immediately adjacent to the athletics stadium at which the club
previously played.
From Banbury, head for Northampton via the A422, B4525 and A43. Pass under the M1 at junction 15A, turn
left at the roundabout and then left again to join the M1 southbound. Leave the M1 after 2¼ miles at the next
junction (15, sp A45 (A43) Kettering). At the traffic lights at the roundabout, turn left to join the A45.
Continue along the A45 for five miles and take the A43 exit (sp Kettering). Upon joining the A43 beware – for
the first two miles there is a 50mph speed limit with overhead speed cameras. Remain on the A43 for 12 miles or
so to bring you to the A14. Join this road and head northwards (left). After a mile, leave at the next junction
(A6/A43) and take the A43 exit (Corby/Stamford). Continue down the hill and under the railway and at the next
roundabout, take the first exit (A6003), signposted Corby and Oakham.
Remain on the A6003 for 6 miles, continuing straight ahead and following the signs for Oakham at both the
A6014 (Corby) and A427 (Market Harborough) roundabouts. At the A6116 roundabout, turn right onto
Rockingham Road and the entrance to the ground is about a ¼ mile on your right. [Distance 53 miles]
Chesham United – Saturday 21st December Meadow Park, Amy Lane, Amersham Road, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, HP5 1NE
The ground is on the southern edge of the town, just off the A416 to Amersham.
From Banbury, take the M40 to junction 2 [54 miles] and take the A355 to Amersham. Six miles from the
motorway, at the Amersham by-pass (A413), continue ahead at the roundabout (second exit) to enter Amersham.
† Follow the A416 through Amersham towards Chesham. As you approach Chesham (down the hill, cricket
ground on the left), you will come to a roundabout. Take the first exit at this point (sharp left) and go up the lane
to the football ground [63].
Alternative route:
Make your way to Bicester via the M40 or the B4100. From Bicester, take the A41 to Aylesbury. Follow the ring
road to the A413 exit (signposted Amersham). Remain on this road for 14 miles to the edge of Amersham and its
by-pass. At the A404 roundabout, turn left (first exit), then in about half a mile, at the A355 roundabout, again
turn left (first exit), to leave the by-pass and enter Amersham. Continue from the point marked (†) above [55].
Hemel Hempstead Town – Thursday 26th December Vauxhall Road, Adeyfield, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, HP2 4HW The ground is close the A414 Hemel to St. Albans road, about 2½ miles from the A41 by-pass. From Banbury, take the M40 southwards and leave at Bicester (junction 9). Follow the A41 to Aylesbury
[38 miles]. Follow the ring road to the A41 exit (signposted Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead and London). This
road soon becomes a dual carriageway as it by-passes Aston Clinton, Tring and Berkhamsted. Remain on the
A41 for another 12 miles then leave at the second Hemel junction (A414, sp Hemel and St. Albans). At the roundabout at the bottom of the slip road, turn left onto the A414. In a quarter of mile, cross over the
A4251 and continue ahead for another quarter mile to Hemel’s famous bi-directional roundabout. Keep to the
right and take the A414 (sp M1, St. Albans). After half a mile, at each of two roundabouts, continue ahead. About
400 yards after the second roundabout, turn left into Longlands (sp Adeyfield School), then second right into
Vauxhall Road. After 200 yards, at the small roundabout, turn left to reach the ground. [55 miles.]
