Elizabeth has volunteered for over 25 years with numerous heritage organizations, includ-ing the Jordan Pioneer Museum of the Twenty, Doon Pioneer Village Museum at Kitchener, the Pennsylvania German Folklore Society of Ontario, Harmony Residence Group, Friends of Fort George, Friends of Lincoln ’s History, Friends of Algonquin Park, the Col. John Butler

Homestead Fund and Colonel John Butler (Niagara) Branch of The United Empire Loyalists ’ Association. She has served on the board of directors of Willowbank School of Restoration Arts since 2004, is a founding donor, and launched the Oliver-Malone Research, Library and Archive Fellowship.

The Joe Prytula Memorial Tro-phy was presented to the 2015 Alumni Member of the year, Bill Stevens, at the St. Catharines Rowing Alumni Association annu-al meeting February 12, 2016 to recognize his volunteer efforts. Bill was a coxswain in the early sixties with the St. Catharines Rowing Club and has been a member of the alumni for over 40 years. The trophy was donated to the alumni by June Prytula in memory of her husband Joe, who

was the Alumni president in 1976. It is interesting to note that June Prytula was a former member of the Col. John Butler (Niagara) Branch and her son Joe and daughter in law Linda are current members. June was a descendant of Christian Sensabaugh. Joe (Christian Sensabaugh) and his wife Linda (John and Jacob German) are current members. Bill and his wife Ivy U.E. have been members for more than 26 years. Bill did the research for their loyalist ancestor John Clark.

Rod Craig, Genealogist, presented certificates to Sarah Newman, Richard Newman Sr., and Richard Newman Jr. for their ancestors John Gould and Peter Hare during the February meeting.

No certificates were presented at the March or April meetings. Currently, there are 8 applications waiting for approval in Toronto.

Rod is working with one other applicant and he contin-ues to answer queries and offer assistance.

“Kinship” is also com-monly used in anthro-pology to describe the lineage of ones direct line of descent from an ancestor.

From the graphic above, one can see

who would be classi-fied as a third cousin.

If you were to expand the chart further, one would be able to follow the pattern to see a fourth or fifth cousin in the line of descent.

The answer to the above question lies in the understanding of “Consanguinity”.

This is the classifica-tion of the degree of the relationship of your direct ancestors or descendants.

“When I look into my

DNA, I seem to be

finding a lot of 3rd

cousins! How do they

relate to me?

The pattern can also be followed through your children to see the degree in which each line fits.

Consanguinity comes from the latin term “consanguinitas”, meaning blood relation.

When researching your family, once in a while you may come across a story or event that you find difficult to understand or even accept. As I sat down to look fur-ther into my father ’s family, I came across the story of Kathryn and Mary Layce Garner. Kathryn was married to Richard Garner and Mary was married to his brother Thomas.

The search revealed, according to the Shrewsbury, UK., forum, the two women were accused of being witches. There was a simple law in place at the time that would tell if you were a witch or not. This was called “Trial by Water”.

Mary was the first to be tried in 1635. She was weighed down with stones and thrown into the river. If she were to escape the drowning part, she was deemed as being aided by the devil and

would be burned at the stake. Mary ended up drowning and was given a Christian burial.

In the following year, Kathryn would suffer the same fate as she was “tried by ordeal” with a dunk-ing stool. The reasons for the accusations of being witches are not clear and we will probably never know.

Following the deaths of their wives, both Richard and Thomas would travel to the new land with their sons. There is record of Richard and his son, John, immi-grating to Virginia in 1637.

Do you have an ancestor with an interesting background?

My research continues …
