1. First Impression Within the first seven seconds of a new encounter,

you are evaluated… even if it is just a glance. People appraise your visual and behavioral appearance from head to toe. They observe your demeanor, mannerisms, and body language and even assess your grooming and accessories – watch, handbag, briefcase. Within only three seconds, you make an indelible impression. You may intrigue some and disenchant others.

2. First impression process The first impression process occurs in every

new situation. Within the first few seconds, people pass judgment on you – looking for common surface clues. Once the first impression is made, it is virtually irreversible. The process works like this:

Page 10: Unit4 How to Make a Good Impression New Horizon College English Unit Four Section A 张庆云

Unit4

II. Preview

The process works like this: If you appear to be of comparable business or social

level, you are considered suitable for further interaction.

If you appear to be of higher business or social status, you are admired and cultivated as a valuable contact.

If you appear to be of lower business or social standing, you are tolerated but kept at arm's length.

If you are in an interview situation, you can either appear to match the corporate culture or not, ultimately affecting the outcome.

3.First impression vs. second impression

According to conventional wisdom, the first impression you make upon meeting a person sets the tone for the subsequent development of the relationship. A bad impression, therefore, constitutes an irrecoverable error. That being the case, you should always make it the highest priority to look your best in any situation in which you might meet people, and women in particular.

Opposing views:

Shallow, superficial people judge others by "first impressions". It is an indication of intellectual laziness (and possibly brain damage), of an unwillingness and possible inability to reason deeply, analyze, and make informed decisions.

First impressionFirst impression

Page 17: Unit4 How to Make a Good Impression New Horizon College English Unit Four Section A 张庆云

Unit4

3.First impression vs. second impression

Second Impression Wisdom dictates holding back the most important

parts of one's self at first contact, in favor of a gradual and orderly getting acquainted period. Getting to know someone, truly know them, is a slow and sometimes messy affair, full of risks and potential missteps, and only a fool would attempt to short-circuit the process by relying on a 'first impression'. There is much more to a person than can be taken in at a single glance, and, as is generally the case, "what you see is not what you get".

Summary Now that we become aware of the importance of body

language to our success in social contacts and we are also clear about its five major aspects through which our body language sends messages to others, it is quite necessary for us to better ourselves in the application of body language. Our positive appearance can be effected through the appropriate clothes we wear and the popular but well-dressed hairstyles we keep. The improvement of our posture should be focused on the way we stand, the way we approach others, and the way we display our abilities.

Home

Gestures are often overdone by presenters. If we find someone’s ideas and charm glow with the help of gestures, we should keep in mind where they come in; but on the other hand, when we find someone’s gestures add nothing but boredom to his speech, we should see to it that such a thing will not happen to ours. We should apply our skills of “eye contact and facial expressions” to where we show respect or liking for the views of others, and where we feel confidence in ourselves.
