Let’s review the FORMS for the Simple Present.

I / you / we / they + verbhe / she / it + verb + (e)s

I speak. You speak. We speak. They speak.He speaks. She speaks. It speaks.

Question: Do + I/they/you/we + speak English? Does + he/she/it/ speak English?

Negative: I/They/You/We don’t speak English. He/She/It doesn’t speak English.

Let’s review the FORMS for the Present Continuous.

subject + be + verb -ing

I am listening.You are listening.He/She/It is listening.We are listening.They are listening.

Question: Are you listening? / Is he studying?

Negative: They are not listening. / I am not studying.

When you are talking about something in the future which is based on an official timetable or schedule, you use the simple present.

The train leaves Houston at 11:30.

The UN General Assembly opens in New York this month.

In statements about fixed dates and plans, you normally use the simple present.

Tomorrow is Tuesday.

It’s my birthday next month.

Monday is the seventeenth of July.

When you want to talk about people’s plans or arrangements for the future you use the present continuous.

I’m meeting Bill next week.

They’re getting married in June.

• What is the difference between these two sentences? Is the statement based on a timetable? Or is based on a plan for the future?

My parents are arriving this week.

The flight arrives at midnight.
