Word Study: Suffixes -less, -ness, -able

Careless kindness enjoyable• Sometimes an ending is added to a word that

changes its meaning. This meaningful word part is called a suffix.

-less=“without”

-ness= “state of”

-able= “is” or “can be”

Suffixes

• The spelling of some base words changes when a suffix is added.

• Underline the base word and circle the suffix.

Grammar: Pronouns in Predicates• Some pronouns are used in the predicate of a

sentence. They receive the action of the verb and are called object pronouns.

• Jack asked them for help.• My sister drove me home.• Mr. Jackson gave us extra food.

Write a Report: Draft

• The first paragraph is the introduction

• The middle paragraphs give facts and details that explain the topic.

• The last paragraph is the conclusion. It sums up the main ideas and leaves the readers with something to think about.

Example

• Introduction Think about the tallest building you have ever seen. How would you get to the top? Imagine what life would be like without the elevator. The invention of a safe passenger elevator changed how people lived. It also changed how cities looked.

• Conclusion We may take elevators for granted today, but life would not be the same without them. Cities would not have skyscrapers. People would not live in high-rise buildings. A world without elevators would be a very different world.
