It was a bitterlycoldnight,andevenatthefarendofthebustheeastwindthatravedalongthestreetcutlikeaknife.Thebusstoppedandtwowomenandamangotintogetherandfilledthevacantplaces.Theyoungwomanwasdressedinsealskin,andcarriedoneofthoselittlePekinesedogsthatwomeninsealskinliketocarryintheirlaps.Theconductorcameinandtookthefares.Thenhiseyes restedwitholdmaliceon thebeadyeyedtoy dog. I saw trouble brewing. Someone pulled the bell violently. Thentheenginestruckwork,andtheconductorwenttohelpthedriver.Itwasalongjobandpresentlytheladywiththedogstoledownthestairsandre-enteredthebus.Whentheenginewas put right, the conductor came back and pulled the bell.Thenhiseyesfellonthedog,andhishandwenttothebell-ropeagain.Thedriver lookedaround, theconductorpointedto thedog, the bus stopped, and the struggle recommencedwith alltheoriginalfeatures—theconductorwalkingthepavement,thedriversmackinghisarmsonthebox,thelittledogblinkingatthelights,thesealskinladydeclaringthatshewouldnotgoonthetopandfinallygoing.
