– or 10 messages every hour not spent in school or sleeping

Page 3: Unit 2 Lesson 2.02 Be Safe in Cyberspace Ethics & Responsibility

Introduction

• That may seem harmless enough, but here are some additional statistics:

• 69 percent of teens regularly receive personal messages online from people they don't know and most of them don't tell a trusted adult about it

• 52 percent of teens have given out personal information online to someone they don't know offline including personal photos and/or physical descriptions of themselves

• In your cyberspace travels, it is important to understand the dangers that exist online and how to deal with them.

Lesson: Cyberbullying • Bullying happens when someone

– hurts or scares another person – on purpose – and the person being bullied has a hard time defending

himself or herself. – Even if they don’t realize it at the time, there are many

ways that young people bully each other.– Click on the Stop Bullying Now link below this

PowerPoint and read “What is Bullying?” – Take a screenshot of the 4 types of bullying and paste it

into a Word Document. – Save it as 2.02 What is Bullying on your F Drive in your

Unit 2 Folder. – Then take a look at Webisode 5 to see an example of

cyberbullying. After you watch Webisode 5, answer the quiz questions at the end.

– Take a screenshot after you answer Question 5.– Save it as 2.02 Webisode 5 on your F Drive in your Unit

Lesson: Predators

• The online world opens the door for trusting young people to interact with virtual strangers—– even people they would avoid in real life.

• According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, – about 1 in 7 kids have been sexually solicited

online. – Sexual predators migrate to wherever young

people go online, including chat rooms and social networking sites.

• One of the attractions of the Internet is the anonymity of the user, – and this is why it can be so dangerous. – A child doesn't always know with whom he or she

is interacting.

Lesson: Predators • Here are some safety tips: • Do not

– post a full name, – address, – phone number, – school name – and other personal information that could help a

stranger to find you • Do not

– send photos to people you meet online • Learn about privacy settings

– that allow you to choose who can view your profiles. • Strangers who approach you online

– aren't always who they say they are and it's dangerous to meet them in real life.

• Report any online sexual solicitation to a trusted adult right away

Lesson: Addiction/Excess

• It’s important to draw limits – for everything we do in our lives – and Internet use is no exception. – Unfortunately, it has been shown that the

Internet can become a form of addiction. – Excessive usage of the Internet can result in

• problems such as headaches and muscle aches

• and can seriously affect a person’s mental health by depriving him/her from having a normal social life.

Lesson: Addiction/Excess

• Frequent use of computers and excessive text messaging can also lead to a serious medical condition– Called carpal tunnel syndrome, characterized by

swelling, pain, tingling, and weakness in the wrists and hands.

• To prevent this serious repetitive stress injury from happening to you: – Set up your keyboard so that it is flat or slightly

elevated. – Do not have your keyboard or handheld device

slanted downward. – Keep your wrists straight and elbows in a 90 degree

angle while typing. – Rest your wrists when you are not typing. – Take frequent short breaks rather than one long

break.

prevent repetitive stress injury. • According to the Occupational Safety and Health

Administration, here are some guidelines: – Top of monitor at or just below eye level – Head and neck balanced and in line with torso – Shoulders relaxed – Elbows close to body and supported – Lower back supported (sit up straight) – Wrists and hands in line with forearms – Feet flat on the floor
