Application dates

What must I do?

1 Select the qualification for which you want to apply.

2 Check that you meet the admission requirements for the qualification for which you want to apply.

3 Complete your application form.

4 Attach the supporting documents to your application.

5 Submit your application form and supporting documents to Unisa in the pre-addressed enclosed envelope. Please remember to add stamps to the envelope before posting it.

6 Pay the R150,00 non-refundable application fee for applications submitted via post or fax. The online application fee is R100,00. This fee is non-refundable even if you decide not to study through Unisa or do not qualify for admission to Unisa.

What will Unisa do?

Unisa will assess your application to ensure that you meet the minimum admission requirements. If your application to study through Unisa in 2011 is successful, the university will send you a registration package. Master’s and doctoral applications are assessed individually by administrative and academic bodies, and you will be informed of the outcome of your application by Unisa’s Postgraduate Qualification Section.

Very important: Your application will only be finalised after you have submitted your application form and supporting documents, paid your non-refundable application fee and have received confirmation that you qualify for your chosen qualification.

Unisa is an internationally accredited open distance learning institution, which means that you, the student, become the focus of all we do. We give you the choice over what, when and where you learn, how you learn and at what pace you learn.

If you have been attending a contact university, you will very likely be used to face-to-face contact with your teachers and fellow students. Studying at Unisa, however, works a little differently and you will be required to do much of your studying on your own. You will receive most of your study material in the form of study guides and tutorial letters, which you will have to work through independently, but you will be able to contact your lecturers and tutors if you need to.

Approximately 280 000 student register to study through Unisa each year and I sincerely hope that you will become part of the Unisa student body in 2011, so that one day you too can count yourself among the numbers of esteemed Unisa alumni.

Is Unisa for me? We will help you to decide whether Unisa is the right university for you. You must be sure that you are prepared to study independently at a distance.

Do I qualify to study through Unisa? Like any other university, Unisa has certain minimum admission requirements. You need to ensure that you meet the requirements for your qualification of choice. Master’s and doctoral applicants must understand that the possession of the prescribed minimum qualification does not automatically qualify a student to register for a higher degree.

How do I make a choice? I know exactly what I want to study. Go to page 20 of this brochure.

Level 1You will learn more about Unisa and about how Unisa works. It is very important that you understand that Unisa is different from other universities. Students at residential universities will attend classes on campus, but as a Unisa student, you will study at home and will learn by studying what your lecturers have written in the study guides and tutorial letters. In level 1, you will be able to decide if Unisa is the right university for you. Being an ODL student means that you can study at your own pace and in your own time, but you may have to make some sacrifices if you want to be a successful student. If like many Unisa students, you are working either full time or part time, much of your studying will take place at night or over weekends, which will leave little time for relaxation.

Level 2This is the application level. As a prospective student, you must apply to register at Unisa. You may not register to study through Unisa if you have not submitted an application form and received confirmation from Unisa that your application was successful. We will take you through this application process in detail in section 6 of this brochure.

Level 3This is the registration level. If Unisa approved your application to study in level 2, you will now be able to register for your approved postgraduate qualification by submitting your registration form and certified copies of your complete academic record. You will now be able to register at one of our campuses or regional centres, or by mail. You will receive the brochure/CD entitled my Registration @ Unisa. All the information you need will be provided in the my Registration @ Unisa pack.

Level 4

We will give you the information you need to be a successful Unisa student. This is a very important phase, as it provides you with an orientation to studying through Unisa, and is where teaching and learning is initiated. You will receive your study material and will have to plan your activities, study independently and submit assignments to otherwise demonstrate your competencies. At the end of the year or during January/February of the next year, an honours student or a student registered for a structured master’s degree will need to write examinations at a Unisa exam centre. If you are registered for the research component of a master’s degree or a doctoral degree, you will have to apply for registration for the following academic year based on the progress made with the research component. Much of the information about Unisa’s services and procedures is found in the brochure/DVD entitled my Studies @ Unisa.

Level 5 This is the level for Unisa alumni, that is, Unisa graduates. By this level of the ODL student walk, you will be a Unisa alumnus. The university would like to communicate with all alumni on a regular basis, so we urge you to maintain contact with us.

How does Unisa work? Unisa is an open distance learning (ODL) institution. But what does this mean for you?

If you have been attending a contact university, you will most likely be used to face-to-face contact with your teachers and fellow students in a classroom setting. Distance learning is very different. As a Unisa student, you will be required to study independently, that is, on your own. You will receive study material in the form of study guides and tutorial letters for each of your modules/papers and you will be able to contact your lecturers and tutors, but for the most part, you will work on your own.

Is Unisa for me? There are many advantages to doing postgraduate study at Unisa. Unisa is an open distance learning institution, which means that you can work at your own pace. It also means that you can manage your studies within the constraints of your work and home life.

Unisa has a first-rate Library with lots of books, journals, archives and electronic databases. The world-class resources of the Library, its international information networks and its expert research librarians will ensure that our research students will receive quality manuscripts, print, audiovisual and digital materials. The vast array of databases open many fields of specialisation and the thousands of journal titles encourage access to the latest trends in scholarship. These offer the intellectual bedrock of Unisa master’s and doctoral studies, and make Unisa a hugely attractive university of choice for serious researchers.

The university also has excellent academics to direct your research. Nearly 100 members of staff have been rated by the National Research Foundation, which indicates the highest calibre of scholarship.

Many professors are highly respected leaders in their fields of study, from Archaeology to Physics, and from Animal Science to Musicology. The range of postgraduate research specialisation is wide and Unisa is also at the forefront of transdisciplinary research, drawing on innovative approaches to applied research related to the human condition in African contexts.

We also provide online mentoring services to master’s and doctoral students, which complement the in-depth disciplinary guidance of supervisors. A regular regimen of research methodology and writing workshops are also conducted during the year to provide additional face-to-face interaction. These events are also made available on podcasts on the sophisticated myUnisa student portal, which is designed to provide an electronic platform for postgraduate study and research.

The Unisa School of Graduate Studies is an exciting new feature of the university. It is the product of Unisa’s ambition to increase its postgraduate profile and improve the performance of master’s and doctoral students. This is also part of a plan to energise research and play a more profound national role in generating advanced knowledge capital to meet the demands of a developing economy. It mirrors international trends as higher education measures its significance in terms of path-breaking basic and applied research. Graduate schools have become the focal point of many research universities, not least in South Africa.

Much African and other international research demonstrates the benefits of transdisciplinary approaches. The Graduate School will therefore participate in and promote forums that explore the potential of such interaction among disciplines to answer increasingly complex questions in local and global contexts, thus marshalling new knowledges to tackle large-scale environmental, political and cultural challenges in society, and crossing epistemological boundaries to conjure solutions. In the process, the School hopes to foster debate in the field of transdisciplinarity, to apply theoretical rigour to its various incarnations -- drawing on the life-worlds of a widely diverse constituency, and to broaden the research capacity of Unisa, in tandem with other agencies in civil society, the public and private sectors, and the research community.

Do I qualify to study through Unisa? Unisa is a South African public university, which means that all Unisa students must meet certain statutory admission requirements. Although admission requirements may differ from qualification to qualification, there are certain basic and minimum admission requirements that you must meet before you will be allowed to study through Unisa.

Honours degree

The minimum admission requirements for an honours degree is usually a bachelor’s degree. Please see section 5 of this brochure for additional admission requirements for each degree.

The honours degree is a postgraduate specialisation qualification, which will prepare you for research-based postgraduate study. This qualification typically follows a bachelor’s degree. It will consolidate and deepen your expertise in a particular discipline, and enable you to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of that discipline. This qualification demands a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence.

Master’s degreeThe minimum admission requirements for a master’s is usually an honours degree. Please see section 5 of this brochure for additional admission requirements for each degree.

The primary purposes of a master’s degree are to educate and train researchers who can contribute to the development of knowledge at an advanced level, or prepare graduates for advanced and specialised professional employment. A master’s degree must have a significant research component.

A master’s degree may be earned in one of two ways: 1 Research: where the curriculum comprises either a single advanced research project, culminating in the production and acceptance of a dissertation, OR a research proposal module (where the outcome is an acceptable research proposal on a research topic). Once this module is finalised, the student may then proceed to register for the research component (ie a dissertation).

2 Coursework: successfully completing a course work programme requiring a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence, and a research project culminating in the acceptance of a dissertation of limited scope. Please note that not all options are available for all degrees. Please refer to the my Registration @ Unisa brochure for more information.

Master’s graduates must be able to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements using data and information at their disposal, communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences, demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level, and continue to advance their knowledge, understanding and skills.

Doctoral degree

The minimum admission requirement is usually a master’s degree in the relevant field. Please see section 5 of this brochure for the additional admission requirements for each qualification.

A doctoral degree will require you to undertake research at the most advanced academic levels culminating in the submission, assessment and acceptance of a thesis. Coursework may be required as preparation or value addition to the research, but does not contribute to the credit value of the qualification. The defining characteristic of this qualification is that you will be required to demonstrate high-level research capability and make a significant and original academic contribution at the frontiers of a discipline or field. The work must be of a quality to satisfy peer review and merit publication. The degree may be earned through pure discipline-based or multidisciplinary research or applied research. A graduate must be able to supervise and evaluate the research of others in the area of specialisation concerned.

How do I make a choice?How ready am I for my postgraduate studies at Unisa?

You are a successful student. You have completed the necessary undergraduate qualifications to qualify for postgraduate studies. Can you remember what it was like and what you wish you had known before you started?

How does your postgraduate choice influence your career development? We suggest that you look at this from three points of view: personal development needs, knowledge of the field and career prospects. While these three points are interlinked, they may have different emphases according to your circumstances. If these three points are in balance, you increase your chances of completing your studies successfully.

Integrating personal and career needs

At this point, your postgraduate studies may be motivated by a balance between experience and academic sophistication. From a professional and personal point of view, you may see it as a sense of completion or as a way of enhancing your career. Or you might see it as having “entertainment value”, that is, a useful way of occupying your time or your contribution to humanity. The degree is not about career mobility as such, but rather about life enhancement.

Are your expectations of postgraduate studies in balance with your current career needs, as well as the changes you anticipate for the future? How much information have you gathered in order to check the possible value of the “future” of your studies? Were you able to do some job shadowing? If not, we recommend that you conduct at least an informational interview to refine your career ideas.

Demands of postgraduate study

Postgraduate studies demand time, energy and commitment. How well are you able to tolerate frustration? This section on motivation and goals indicates how deeply you have thought about the possible impact of your postgraduate studies on your life. The more clearly defined your goals are, the better your chances are of completing your studies. Internal sense of control refers to how well you focus your will, your heart and your mind on the task at hand. You take responsibility for your actions, and you manage your stress and your relationships.

Deepening of academic skills

Postgraduate studies require a deepening of your academic skills in order to make a contribution to knowledge creation. Knowledge creation is the apex of postgraduate achievement. The sections on time management, study responsibility and academic preparedness provide guidelines. How well you progress with your postgraduate studies depends on your ability to assimilate information generated by these questions.

Journey of discovery

The biggest challenge that confronts you at this point is to extend your thinking and your capacity to find and integrate information. In order to find an appropriate topic, your ability to use advanced search functions on the computer and extensive use of the library is very important. How quickly can you become more skilful? Finally, postgraduate studies have equal amounts of sorrow and joy. Nobody can teach you how to find the balance; it is a journey of discovery.

What can you do to meet the challenges?

We suggest that you work through this check list to gauge how ready you are for postgraduate studies. Please note that the following points provide a framework of the necessary skills. How and when do I apply to study through Unisa? The application process gives the university an opportunity to check whether you meet the basic admission requirements and to perform various administrative tasks related to your application. If you do not submit an application form before the closing date for applications, you will not be allowed to study through Unisa in 2011.

Very important: Your application is merely an indication that you would like to consider Unisa as your university of choice in 2011; it does not bind you to study through Unisa in 2011.

Who must apply?All students who have never studied through Unisa (including foreign students and students studying at other institutions), who wish to enrol for a formal qualification, must apply to study through Unisa.

Who must not apply?Students wishing to register for short learning programmes, SBL programmes or students who have previously registered for formal studies.

When must I apply?The application dates to study through Unisa in 2011 are as follows:

6 Pay the R150,00 (post and fax) or R100,00 (online) non-refundable application fee. This fee is non-refundable even if you decide not to study through Unisa or do not qualify for admission to Unisa.

n Online payments: You will receive a reference number against which to make an online credit card payment.

n Absa bank: You may pay your application fee at any Absa bank after you receive a reference number from Unisa. Please do not pay your application fee without a reference number, as Unisa cannot trace payments without a reference number.

n Postal orders: You may submit a postal order to the value of R150,00 made out in favour of Unisa. Please ensure that you complete the details at the back of the postal order before submitting it to Unisa. Only postal orders purchased from a South African Post Office are accepted. Please note, the South African Post Office charges an administration fee to issue postal orders. No faxed or photocopied versions of postal orders will be accepted.

What will Unisa do?Applications for honours degrees

Unisa will assess your application to ensure that you meet the minimum admission requirements.

If your application to study through Unisa in 2011 is successful, the university will send you a registration package.

Very important: Your application will only be finalised after you have submitted your application form and supporting documents, paid your non-refundable application fee and have received confirmation that you qualify for your chosen qualification.

Applications for master’s and doctoral degrees

Unisa will assess your application to ensure that you meet the minimum admission requirements and any additional requirements, and that you have submitted the necessary documentation and have paid the required application fee.

The assessment of applications by the administrative and academic bodies is a lengthy process, which may take up to three months to complete. On receipt of your application form, supporting documentation and application fee, Unisa will send you a registration form to complete and submit to the university.

Due to the timeframes involved in this process and to ensure that you can be accommodated as soon as possible, we urge you to submit a completed and signed registration form to Unisa before you have received notification that your application has been successful. In the case of structured master’s degrees (ie a master’s degree of which the curriculum includes papers and a research component), it will speed up the process if you also pay the minimum required study fee when you submit your registration form. A quote on the required study fee can be obtained from the Unisa Contact Centre or any regional centre. If your application is not successful, the credit amount will be refunded on written request.

7 What happens now? If you submitted your application form, application fee and supporting documents by the closing date for applications, Unisa will send you a letter to tell you whether or not your application to study through Unisa in 2011 has been successful.

How do I apply for student funding?Undergraduate and honours studentsDo I qualify for an NSFAS loan and what are the criteria?Financially needy and academically deserving students who are applying for formal qualifications may apply for funding. Foreign students do not qualify for NSFAS funding.

What does it cover and is the funding renewable? Study fees and academic essentials such as prescribed books and tutorial classes are funded. No accommodation, meals, pocket money or transport is covered. An NSFAS loan is renewable on proof of academic progress and is subject to the availability of funds.

How should I obtain my prescribed books?Option 1You may use the Wizzit card to purchase prescribed books at an official bookstore that has an agreement with Eduloan and/or Unisa. You may collect your Wizzit card 14 working days after submitting the correctly completed Loan Agreement Form. Choose a bookstore to collect the card and then purchase your prescribed books at any of the official bookstores.

Option 2Any student living in a remote area without a bookstore must submit a formal quotation from any official Unisa/Eduloan bookstore for the prescribed books required. A cheque will be issued in the service provider’s name and will be either mailed to the student at the postal address specified at registration or can be collected by the student from the DSF or from a Unisa regional

How do I apply for funding? Fill in the NSFAS Loan Application Form and hand it in at any of Unisa’s regional offices (Student Administration), the Registration Hall on the Sunnyside campus or post it to the Directorate: Student Funding (PO Box 392, Unisa, 0003). Do a temporary registration at the beginning of Unisa’s registration period (your registration will only be finalised once your Loan Agreement Form has been processed). Ask the Directorate of Student Funding to process your application to determine whether or not your application was successful. If your application is successful, sign the pre-agreement quotation and the Loan Application Form. Your legal guardian must sign a consent form and submit a certified copy of his or her ID if you are not yet 18 years of age. Collect your Wizzit card and purchase your required textbooks.

How and when should I repay the loan? A loan is repayable as soon as you secure employment (irrespective of whether or not you have completed your qualification) and are earning an annual salary of R26 300 or more. Repayments can either be deducted from your salary, by means of debit order or by depositing the money directly into the NSFAS account (contact NSFAS on 021 763 3232 in this regard).

Do I qualify for a bursary and what are the criteria?n Honours students who graduate with 65% are eligible for funding for master’s degree study. The same percentage applies to master’s students applying for the first time for this bursary to pursue their doctoral studies

n A total of 10% of the total budget that this directorate receives for these designated bursaries will be awarded to non-South African students.

n Bursaries are not awarded to full-time Unisa staff members. Full-time staff members should apply for the master’s and doctoral support programme.
