Union County is well represented in grid tilt North-South Classic at Kean June 27 By JR Parachini Sports Editor The 33rd annual North-South AU-Star Football Classic - set for June 27 at 7 p.m. at Kean University in Union - includes seven players from Union County high schools on the North roster. They include wide receiver PJ Franciotti (6-5, 195) of Johnson, tight end Ryan O'Malley (6-6, 225) of Summit, offensive lineman Daniel Laguerre (6-2, 240) of Union, offensive lineman Tiaquan Womack (6-1, 280) of Plainfield, defensive tackle Zach Trout- man (6-5, 250) of New Providence, defensive tackle Osa Igbinosun (6-2, 250) of Rahway and defensive back Jaurice Jones (6-1, 180) of Linden. Media Day for the event was held Sunday at Piscataway. All seven Union County players were present to have their picture taken. This will be the first time in 14 years - since 1997 - that the North-South Football Classic returns as the most prominent summer all-star game. Many of the state's top players are involved. The Governor's Bowl is no longer being held after a 13-game run from 1998-2010. Lack of finances are the No. 1 reason for the all-star game going by the wayside. Franciotti will continue playing at Colgate, Igbi- nosun is undecided and O'Malley will continue in the Ivy League at Pennsylvania. Jones, who had an official visit to Rutgers during basketball season, is still undecided, while Troutman will head to Albany for football. Also an outstanding wrestler, Troutman finished fourth in the state at heavyweight. Laguerre is undecided, while Womack will continue at East Stroudsburg. The North won last year's game 17-3 and trails the South 15-14-2 in the series. The North has never led. This is the third straight year that the game is being played at Kean University, with officials very pleased that the game draws a large crowd there. Coaches on the North roster who guided schools to state championships last fall include retired New Providence mentor Frank Bottone and Morristown coach and Cranford native Chris Hull. Caldwell college career closes By JR Parachini Sports Editor The greatest wrestler to come out of Rahway High School and one of the best to ever compete at North Carolina State saw his collegiate career come to a close last Thursday. Darrion Caldwell, the 2009 NCAA champion in the 149-pound weight class, suffered a shoulder injury in his second-round match against Michigan's Eric Grajales at the NCAA Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The injury default ended Caldwell's quest to become NC State's first ever two-time NCAA champ. Caldwell finished the season with a 15-1 overall record, including his 18-7 first-round win earlier Thursday overUNC Greensboro's Ivan Lopouchanski. Caldwell sat out last season with a shoulder injury and returned to action midway through this season, with the hopes of defending his title from two years ago. But against Grajales, Caldwell made a move that caused his shoulder to pop out of its socket again. "It was surprising because it was such an innocuous looking move," Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan explained on NC State's athletics website. "It's not like he threw the left hand and arm making a shot. He had Grajales from behind and was just trying to reach around. We've been training him to do that with his right arm, but he used his left and only moved it a little ways and the shoulder popped out." Caldwell finished 109-13 at NC State after posting a 146-4 mark at Rahway that included three state titles. Caldwell will have surgery to repair his left shoulder, then will move on to the international wrestling circuit and a berth with the United States National team.
