While 96% of India is Hindu, it is amazing to see what the Spirit of God is doing in India. The “harvest is plentiful”, and it was exciting for me to see how God was raising up believers to share the Gospel. I very often felt like I had stepped back into Acts 2. All of the church planters, trainers and believers I encountered were first generation Christians (the first believers in their families). I heard many testimonies of how God transformed their lives (sometimes with signs and miracles), and I witnessed their passion for sharing the Gospel, even at times under threat of persecution. The mission dollars we have been sending to India goes to help train these first generation believers, and it was truly exciting to know we have had a small part of what God is doing in India. I was frequently called upon to speak or preach to small house churches or groups of church planters, and it was humbling to be with people who are so excited and committed to share the good news of Jesus Christ. One evening, after I had been asked to preach and encourage a group of church planters, half of whom had been persecuted for sharing the Gospel, I was taken to a small village on the outskirts of the town of Bodhgaya, which is the birthplace of Buddhism. As we drove down this little dirt road at dusk, I saw these small mud huts and people just sitting by the road. I asked who they were and I was told this was a village of “untouchables”, and one of the church planters had recently visited there, shared the Gospel and many in this village had come to Christ. As we walked into this small village, the people had gathered at the last hut and began singing to the Lord with thanksgiving for our presence with them. I have to say, this was pretty overwhelming. The church planter shared with me that they hoped to start a small school in the area, so these “untouchables” might be able to receive some education. Whether I was visiting an orphanage, a small Christian school, a small house church, taking part in the baptism of about 35 new believers, or speaking to church planters (one whose organization has started 4,000 small village churches and baptized 60,000 people in the past five years) the excitement of what God is doing there was amazing. I am grateful for this opportunity, and even though it was quite hot (don’t visit India this time of year), I saw first hand how First Presbyterian has been able to be a small part of the work of God in India. Reflections from IndiaReflections from IndiaReflections from India Many of you have heard me share from the pulpit the past two Sundays some experiences from my recent mission trip to India with our Frontier Fellowship missionary, Cody Watson. While 96% of India is Hindu, it is amazing to see what the Spirit of God is doing in India. The “harvest is plentiful”, and it was exciting for me to see how God was raising up believers to share the Gospel. I very often felt like I had stepped back into Acts 2. One evening, after I had been asked to preach and encourage a group of church planters, half of whom had been persecuted for sharing the Gospel, I was taken to a small village on the outskirts of the town of Bodhgaya, which is the birthplace of Buddhism. 2 FROM THE ASSOCIATE

from the associate pastor Challenging You Toward Discipleship A Thought or Two

Every partner/member is a missionary You may know that I have had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a year-long conference called Future Travelers. Author and lecturer Alan Hirsch was our host at three churches around the United States that are seeing breakthrough ministry in their communities. We visited Rivertree Church in Canton, Ohio; Soma Community Church in Tacoma, Washington and Austin Stone Church in Austin Texas. The last church that the 25 of us (ECO and Fellowship of Presbyterian pastors) visited was a church in which Glenn Bell’s son and grandchild are covenant partners. Our entourage would arrive on a Monday morning, meet all day, spend the night, then meet all day Tuesday and fly home late that afternoon. Obviously, it was a whirlwind but well worth it!! These three churches are quite different in many ways, and they minister in quite different cultural contexts. But they all have a common passion to push outside the walls of the church building and engage the community for Christ. They all use a strategy for this work called “Missional Communities” (MC). We learned at Rivertree that a MC is made up of 30 to 50 people who have an agreed upon objective in reaching their community for Christ. One MC may seek to reach an elementary school; another may seek to work in an elderly community; another may seek to address poverty in

some meaningful way. But they all are organized specifically to reach their community for Christ in an evangelistic manner. They all have a high bar of involvement, because the richness of the community is to a great extent the primary means by which people are drawn toward Christ. Like Barry observed in India, these MC’s are looking for “persons of peace” that are not Christian but are comfortable and open to Christians and their message. I am encouraged and challenged by what I saw in each of these three churches. At Austin Stone they had a slogan that captures the essence of MC’s when they said, “Every partner/member is a missionary.” This is true, and it is challenging. If you are interested in more reading that would help you become more aware of these ideas, I would love to provide you with a bibliography. But just one that I will mention is one I have read recently- Leading Missional Communities: Rediscovering the Power of Living on Mission Together by Mike Breen of 3DM. I am more and more convinced that we are missing an element of our discipleship to Jesus if we are not able to name our mission field. Be encouraged and challenged in your discipleship to Jesus!

Summer Sermon Series

James, the half-brother of Jesus, writes this short epistle to encourage followers of Jesus to continue growing in their faith. He reminds us that good works flow from those who are filled with the Spirit. We might say James’ letter is the ultimate description of the relationship between faith and works. Join us for this series on “Practical Christianity.”

INDIA 3

A few stories and pictures from India... Chandan, his wife Pramila, Cody Watson and me, being introduced in a small house church in Patna. Chandan heads “Empowering Believers Connection”, the organization we support through Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship. He helps the church planters with their training, financial accountability, strategic plan-ning and governance. Pramila runs a small Christian school and has a ministry to women , including trying to rescue children from the sex trafficking trade. Marigold leis were given everywhere we were introduced and asked to speak.

An orphanage in Patna, run by Maria, a Romanian lady and her hus-band. For 17 years she has received children into one of three homes

she rents. I asked how she receives funding and she said, “by faith.” The landlord had extended her May rent because she did not have the

funds. An Incredible testimony of faith.

A small Christian school started by Rajeesh, a church planter in Jahamabad. Rajeesh has 4 small schools and he and his trainers have started 250 house churches. The schools provide education, but also a small income for the church planters. The children are all taught English.

An orphanage in Kumar, run by Minsoh Biharti. These children live at Minosh’s home, where he, his wife and mother, have built rooms around a

courtyard to keep the children. His primary work is church planting in Varanasi, the Hindu holy city on the Ganges. The children are praying

for me.

M.K. Biharti, who traveled with us for four days, has the largest of the Church planting organizations I met. In the past 5 years they have trained over 130 Master Church Trainers and have started 4,000 village churches and baptized 60,000 new believers. We took part in the baptism of about 35 one afternoon.

One of the “Untouchables” in a small village on the outskirts of Bodhgaya.

These would be lowest of the low in the Indian caste system. Jesus said, “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine,

you did for me.'“

4 CHURCH ADMINISTRATOR

Church Administration Matters Quarterly Contribution Statements Our 2015 Stewardship campaign resulted in 217 pledges to the General Fund which is used to fund the ministries of First Presbyterian Church. Additionally, there are covenant partners and guests who contribute regularly to the General Fund. By now, all covenant partners should have received a contribution statement for the first quarter of 2015. These statements serve as a reminder of the commitments made to support the ministries of First Presbyterian Church. I would encourage you to take a few minutes to review your statement. If you have questions or need additional information please contact Gwen DuRant , 843-662-2583 or e-mail [email protected]. Thank you for your faithful support, both financially and with time and talent, of First Presbyterian Church.

Campus Parking After a recent medical situation on a Sunday morning where an ambulance had difficulty gaining access to the Sanctuary, it was “suggested” that parking on Sunday morning be limited to only one side of the driveways coming off Park Avenue. Many have reported near misses with vehicles upon turning into the driveways due to cars being parked on both sides of the driveway. Additionally, I would like to encourage all able-bodied covenant partners to practice “sacrificial parking,” and reserve the closer parking spaces for those in our congregation with mobility issues and for our guests. Thank you for your cooperation in considering this request as we look for ways to make our campus more inviting and user-friendly.

Thank you Wit Poston As a requirement for his Eagle Scout award, Wit and several members of Boy Scout Troop 477 recently completed a campus beautification project here at First Presbyterian Church. The project included relocating a piece of outdoor recreation equipment (Ga Ga Ball pit) to the new playground and installing mulch in the flower beds around the CLC. Wit is the son of Jim and Nancy Poston of our congregation.

Welcome Gwen! Hello First Presbyterian! I’m your new Financial Secretary. Church work is very special to me as I have been blessed to have worked at another large church in Florence for the past 13 years. While there I realized that what I did/do was not just a job, but a calling too. Being hired here was an answered prayer and I thank Teresa Stewart for forwarding my resume to Don Hebert when the position became available again. I have been so well received since my first day here and appreciate the welcome from those that have stopped by to introduce themselves. If I’ve not met you, please stop by and say hello. The hospitality and warmth confirmed that this is exactly where God wants me to be. He is so good, all the time! A little about me, I’m married to my best friend, Chris DuRant, who is the area manager for Black’s Tire Service. We have 2 children, Babs Neumann and her husband Brian, who have two children, Walker and Murray, which are my heart. Our son, Drake lives in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with his wife Sa-rah. They’re newlyweds! Chris and I love to visit the grandchildren as often as possible (they live in Hilton Head), fish when we get the chance, and we’re trying our hands at gardening with some tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and zucchini. We’ll see if we have green thumbs or not.

Thanks again for allowing me to be a part of the team and ministries at First Presbyterian. I look forward to meeting you soon. -Gwen DuRant
