June 2016 Newsletter Principal’s Message It is with sadness and anticipation that I write my final newsletter message as the Principal of Tom Longboat Junior Public School. We have grown together over the years to provide your children with opportunities to learn both in and outside of the classroom. With parental support and intentional teaching, Tom Longboat students have routinely scored above Board and Ministry standards on the EQAO assessment. The staff continues to set high expectations for all students and we are constantly looking at ways to incorporate student experiences and cultural diversity within lessons/units that are authentically planned. We have attempted to provide many opportunities for the parent community to be a part of the educational process and to feel included in the “business” of school. It has been a pleasure to lead a wonderful team of educators at Tom Longboat Jr. P.S. They are dedicated, knowledgeable and committed to academic achievement and the social/emotional well-being of all students. I have had the pleasure of watching seven graduating classes move on to senior school. With each class, their maturity, willingness to accept responsibility and overall contributions to the school continue to amaze me. From doing announcements and answering phones in the office to playing a leading role in the organization of school-wide events, Tom Longboat students demonstrate their leadership and citizenship on a daily basis. I am confident that not only will Tom Longboat graduates be active and contributing members of society, but they will be effective leaders among their peers. I wish all Tom Longboat students all the best! I will miss them with all my heart as they are caring, compassionate and selfless individuals. They will continue to make the community proud as they achieve accomplishments and contribute positively to their community. I don’t consider this good-bye, but a good-bye for now. Emily Carr P.S. is within the same community as Tom Longboat and I plan on remaining active among the family of schools. As Ms. Chisholm assumes the leadership role, she will continue to build upon past achievements. Thank you for adding to my personal and professional growth and I hope I have contributed to the betterment of the Tom Longboat community during my tenure as principal. Forever grateful, R. June 2016 Newsletter Principal’s Message

It is with sadness and anticipation that I write my final newsletter message as the Principal of Tom Longboat Junior Public School.

Cousins Principal

4 Safety Patroller Fun Day

Longboat’s safety patrollers had a lot of fun at Morningside Park on June 14 and also won a pizza party

for outstanding achievement as safety patrollers! Thank you safety patrollers for all your hard work!

5 Culture Day

On the evening of June 16, the staff, students and parents of Tom Longboat PS celebrated our 4th Annual Culture Day. The potluck dinner gave everyone a chance to break bread with families in our community and it was a big success! The food was DELICIOUS! There were more than 430 people enjoying different types of cultural food. When they were sitting outside on the field, everyone got to interact with others and enjoy their company.

Culture Day not only provided an excellent selection of food and conversation, but it also provided some excellent entertainment, too. The “Apex Drumming Team,” which included Mei Ying, Zheng, Andy, Angela, Bobby and Jia Ying, did an incredible job. We also had a martial arts demonstration and 2 cultural dances performed by Naveena, Nadia, Luxiga and Daranita.

Thank you to all staff, parents and students for making our 4th Annual Culture Day a huge success!

The 60 Minutes Kids Club is where students go on a website to record their healthy habits each and every day. Three times a year, for a month, students from across Canada compete to see who is the

healthiest, most active school. Tom Longboat is a very active school and to promote the 60 Minute Kids Club there are three

students, Sharfaa, Imran, and Vinuja, who make announcements everyday to give tips and exercises to help the students be healthy and active. As a result of everyone’s efforts, Tom Longboat came in

6th place in Canada. Great job to all the students who participated! -Sharfaa

Our Class Trip to Colour Me Mine!

On Thursday, June 2nd Mr. Mark’s and Ms. Yung’s classes went on a trip to Colour Me Mine Art Studios

to learn about pottery. For most of us, it was our first time painting pottery and it was a great

experience for everyone. Most of us were making and painting a cup as a present for Father’s Day.

First, when we got there we sat at a table and have been given mugs and trays of brightly coloured

paints. The mugs felt like chalk and it was powdery. It was really exciting to be creating a unique design

especially for our dad. The people there told us to paint 3 layers of every colour we used so when they

bake and glaze it, it will stand out. When we were painting, we found out that it’s a lot harder to paint

words and creative drawings than we thought. It took a long time to paint the whole cup on the

outside 3 times. Eventually, people started finishing up and it was really fun! Then they baked and

glazed our cups, it took a few days to bake our cups at 1000 degrees celsius! That’s CRAZY!!! When we

got our cups back, they came out really nice and the 3 layers of our painting helped it stand out more.

This trip and experience was AWESOME!!! - Vithushika
