It is the first science education centre in the world to be located within medical research laboratories, part of Barts and The London School of Medicine & Dentistry an at Queen Mary University of London. We have two unique learning spaces embedded within the Blizard Institute: our award-winning digital interactive STEM Pod launched in September 2009; and more recently, Neuron Pod, a dedicated learning space used to deliver our onsite workshops and shows. Since our opening in 2009, we have engaged with over 200,000 participants. We seek to have a positive impact on the educational, career and health choices of the children, young people and families we work with. The Centre is now entering a new and exciting phase in its journey. The first 10 years have seen a growing list of topic-led science shows and workshops, a very successful Youth Members Programme, increasing visitor numbers to the immersive STEM Pod and new Neuron Pod, yearly financial growth and development of new and existing partnerships across the sector. To become a nationally and internationally recognised informal science learning centre, we aim to continually develop, innovate and excite our visitors. The School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) is a significant constituent of Queen Mary University of London. It is organised into six separate Institutes, of which the Blizard Institute is the largest, with a personnel of c450, financial turnover of £60 million per annum and research expenditure of over c£20 million per annum. Job Purpose

To manage the development and delivery of Centre of the Cell’s Learning Programme for schools, young people, families and the public

To manage a team of specialist staff to ensure that the Learning Team targets and funded projects are delivered on time and on budget

To work with the Head of Operations in communicating with the funders of the Learning Programme, including writing funders’ reports and hosting visits for funders

To contribute to the expansion of Centre of the Cell’s Learning Programme and Learning Team, through the implementation of new projects, particularly to utilise the opportunities afforded by the opening of ‘Neuron Pod’ in 2019

Main Duties & Responsibilities To support the development and delivery of Centre of the Cell’s Learning Programme for schools,

young people, families and the public To ensure that the needs of Centre of the Cell’s audience are met, with a high level of customer service

delivered throughout the Learning Programme To develop new sources of income, through new projects and events for Centre of the Cell To manage/supervise Centre of the Cell’s Learning Team, special project staff, and a team of casual

staff To manage the day to day responsibilities of booked activities, including delivery of sessions when

required To work with the Head of Operations in communicating with the funders of the Learning Programme,

including writing funders’ reports and hosting visits for funders Contribute to senior management meetings and meetings with external funders To oversee the project management of Centre of the Cell’s funded projects to ensure targets are

achieved on time and quality To work with the Director of Centre of the Cell in co-ordinating development of new content and

updating of existing content with scientists, medical practitioners, hospital staff, other QMUL staff and staff from other organisations

To work closely with staff in other QM public engagement, outreach and widening participation projects to maximise impact and pool resources

To lead on Centre of the Cell’s evaluation activities To support the marketing of the Centre’s learning programmes, including school mail shots, social

media, e-newsletters and events listings
