ABSTRACT

Hollywood and Bollywood are both popular cinemas and their names resonate their success around the world. Hollywood is known world-wide and Bollywood is popular in India and the eastern countries. Students in India get exposed to movies and artists of both the industries. The research paper is a study or analysis of the choices of cinema among college-going students in the city of Bollywood, Mumbai. The research analyses their preferences in two main divisions: Hollywood and Bollywood. The research will also determine which movie industry is appreciated more and why. No research yet analysed the choices in cinema as the presence of Bollywood in India is so immense that the Hollywood doesn’t get the same attention in the country. But the upcoming generations seem to be much more interested in the western movies than their elders.

Keywords: Bollywood, Hollywood, popularity, college students

INTRODUCTION

Hollywood is based in Los Angeles, California, US whereas Bollywood is Indian film industry based in Mumbai. Bollywood has been gaining popularity since years in many western countries including the US. Hollywood is a term that has become synonymous with the American cinema, while Bollywood is highly affiliated to the Indian Cinema. Hollywood and Bollywood are two completely different cinemas that cater to different audiences and hence cannot properly be compared. However, they do have many differences between them.

Hollywood began as a small community in California, its association with the film industry has boosted its popularity and it currently has many different studios, tourist spots and is located near celebrity homes. On the other hand, Bollywood is an informal term that is used to represent the Hindi-language film industry in India. Bollywood is just a fraction of Indian cinema, which also incorporates Assamese cinema, Telugu cinema, Marathi cinema, Gujarati cinema, etc. Bollywood is not a physical place, but rather a representative term for popular Hindi films. Bollywood is the largest film producer around the world and is responsible for churning over 1,000 movies each year. It is followed by Nigeria and the US. Bollywood has become popularly known for its music, dance and love stories. Bollywood has still followed this trend that has made it popular and continues to incorporate music and dance in its movies. It’s commonly said that Bollywood makes movie stars and Hollywood makes star movies.

It is quite difficult to properly compare both the cinema industries as they are both different, in terms of how it received its start as well as the audience for which the movies are being made. Both the industries also differ in terms of revenue and film production. Bollywood makes more films, but Hollywood has larger movie earnings and spends more on movie production. Hollywood movies with music are classified as musical while Bollywood 99% have music and dance (~ 5-6 songs per film). Bollywood has also presented far greater variance in quality. The best mainstream stuff is about as good as Hollywood when it comes to serious drama, dark satire, gritty crime and true musicals.

4

Page 5: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

Hollywood has gained recognition worldwide as a prominent film industry and hence Hollywood films are released in majority of the countries. Bollywood is recently becoming recognized in many other countries and has been gaining recognition as a prominent player. Bollywood movies are being released abroad; more cultures have a chance to view them. Subtitles ensure a greater audience understanding of dialogue and culture. As to whether which one is better, it completely depends on the viewer’s preference. So, the researcher chose to analyze the recent preferences in the college going students in cinema. The research is going to study what students in the colleges of Mumbai prefer to watch more.

NEED OF THE STUDY

The study determines the preferences of the cinema in the college going students particularly in Mumbai. The study will help us to know what college students prefer to watch more- Bollywood or Hollywood and to understand the factors affecting their preferences in cinema. The study will also determine which movie industry is appreciated more and why?

A comparison in the viewership of both the industries is necessary to understand what youth of the nation likes to watch. We need to understand their ideas and views towards cinema and how they are changing with the coming generations.

It will be helpful to the upcoming directors, actors and other artists to know what content people want to see and will want see in the future. What are the new technologies and developments people prefer to see in movies. For e.g great special effects and work of good cameras is what youngsters want to watch in super hero flick like superman, batman or ironman. These kinds of special effects and VFX are rarely used in Indian cinema. Movies like Ra.One and Kkrish 3 are the only movies considered as a landmark in terms of special effects in Bollywood. But the point to notice is that even though Ra.One is one of the most expensive movies in Bollywood history it didn't earn much because people in India have still not accustomed to that kind of technology. But when young consumers of movies and media are taken into consideration, the special effects, creativity in terms of story line as well as technology is more likeable. Superhero, sci-fi’s, action films are more likeable among this generation.

The research will also study what students like about both the industries and what they dislike about them. Also, the research will focus on if changes should be introduced in any of them according to audience.

The researcher asked the college students questions on the topic in form of a questionnaire to know their responses and presents the interpretations and conclusion in this research paper.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Hollywood and Bollywood are both popular cinemas and their names resonate their success around the world. Hollywood is known world-wide and Bollywood is popular in India. For a large chunk of the Bollywood target audience, movies are just a medium for entertainment where they can switch off their brains, forget their miseries, problems, tensions and get lost in a fantasy world of action, romance, songs, and dance with a highly unrealistic happy ending. Thus, Bollywood focuses on mainly masala movies (and is also called as escapist fantasy cinema by some critics). Hollywood movies are appreciated because of the direction and story and not by the actor(s) in it.

After reading a few paper and various online portals where people participated in debates like- Bollywood vs Hollywood or which is better?- Bollywood or Hollywood, the researcher found these facts and opinions of some authors:

Hollywood

Concentrate more on the script, logic and other criterias. Actors: Age is just a number. Anyone can take the lead role; The beautiful one, the ugly one, the

old one, the young one, gender. They don't mostly care about the physical appearance unless the actors acting skills are good.

They reach out to a wide number of audiences. Hence their box office collection is huge. Their concepts are way too ahead of and any other film industries. They do comprise of mediocre films and films that are excellent. More schmaltzy, comforting, campy. Nepotism is not widely followed.

Bollywood

Concentrate more of selling the movie tickets and gaining more box office collection. Actors: You got to be taller than an average Indian, beautiful or handsome. Dancing skills and

other talents are compulsory if you want the lead role. Female lead roles are rarely seen and actors who are really excellent and are not good looking don't get movie deals.

Their major impact is only within India. They do reach out to many other countries, but the collections are not huge.

Most of the movies are masala based. Throw in some lame humor, item songs and a climax fight with gravity defying stunts. There are movies that are out of stereotypes but not many enjoy it.

The industry is dominated by nepotism The major difference lies in the audience. People in India (say 50%) won’t like the concept which

is followed in Hollywood movies. They won’t like the high level animation and won’t appreciate the thrill.

More sentimental, melodramatic, paradoxically exaggerated

6

Page 7: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

The basic differences between both the industries can be understood from this table.

7

Page 8: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

The whole point can be explained in one sentence that, Hollywood Movies are made for Classes & Bollywood Movies are made for Masses. But, why? The researcher tries to answer this question too in the research paper.

Bollywood has far greater variance in quality. The best mainstream stuff is about as good as Hollywood when it comes to serious drama, dark satire, gritty crime and true musicals. The best in other genres --action, sci-fi, superhero, spy, chick flicks -- does not match Hollywood. The worst is far worse in all genres. The only genre where Bollywood might possibly come out ahead is certain kinds of tragedy, where Hollywood's obsession with redemption becomes a weakness. But this is a doubtful case too.

Bollywood movies often fail artistically because they showcase unprocessed national insecurities and identity formation issues. This is particularly evident in movies with a foreign plot element. Hollywood movies often fail artistically because of American complacency, insularity and assumed natural cultural superiority.

Initially, Bollywood movies were also long and would sometimes cross 3 hours; however, this has currently been reduced to 2 to 2 ½ hours. Many producers have also started limiting the number of songs from the usually 7 or 8 to 5-6 proper songs, with the rest used as playback numbers. Bollywood was known for its romantic plot lines, but newer generation of movie producers, directors and writers are coming out with more complicated plot lines and have shifted focus from love to other aspects of the film. However, majority of Bollywood films still continue to incorporate romance or a romantic aspect in the films so as to appeal all types of movie goers. Bollywood is also no longer limited to making movies in just Hindi, and has incorporated the English language as well as prominent English phrases in the movies. Although, it receives criticism from many movie goers that sometimes songs and dance take away from the original plot of the movie, other claim it gives a refreshing break allowing the movie goers to recap the plot line and the story, along with enjoying the music and the vivid, bright sceneries that are part of the dance sequence.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Quantitative Method:

Quantitative methods are based on the measurement of quantity or amount. It is objective in nature and concentrate on measurement phenomena. It involves collecting and analyzing numerical data and applying statistical tests. Quantitative research deals in numbers, logic, and an objective stance. Quantitative research focuses on numeric and unchanging data and detailed, convergent reasoning rather than divergent reasoning [i.e., the generation of a variety of ideas about a research problem in a spontaneous, free-flowing manner]. The overarching aim of a quantitative research study is to classify features, count them, and construct statistical models in an attempt to explain what is observed.

Its main characteristics are:• The data is usually gathered using structured research instruments.• The results are based on larger sample sizes that are representative of the population.• The research study can usually be replicated or repeated, given its high reliability.• Researcher has a clearly defined research question to which objective answers are sought.• All aspects of the study are carefully designed before data is collected.• Data are in the form of numbers and statistics, often arranged in tables, charts, figures, or other

non-textual forms.• Project can be used to generalize concepts more widely, predict future results, or investigate causal relationships.• Researcher uses tools, such as questionnaires or computer software, to collect numerical data.

Strengths of Quantitative Methodology: Quantitative researchers try to recognize and isolate specific variables contained within the study framework, seek correlation, relationships and causality, and attempt to control the environment in which the data is collected to avoid the risk of variables, other than the one being studied, accounting for the relationships identified.

• Allows for greater objectivity and accuracy of results. Generally, quantitative methods are designed to provide summaries of data that support generalizations about the phenomenon under study. In order to accomplish this, quantitative research usually involves few variables and many cases, and employs prescribed procedures to ensure validity and reliability;• Personal bias can be avoided by keeping a 'distance' from participating subjects and using accepted computational techniques.

This method helped the researcher collect primary data- the raw material to which statistical methods were applied for the purpose of analysis and interpretation.

Limitations of Quantitative Methodology: Quantitative methods presume to have an objective approach to studying research problems, where data is controlled and measured, to address the accumulation of facts, and to determine the causes of behavior. As a consequence, the results of quantitative research may be statistically significant but are often humanly insignificant. Also, the research was restricted only to the urban population of Mumbai.

The method used for survey is Questionnaire which is explained later in the paper.

RESEARCH DESIGN

AIM: To know and analyse the popularity of Bollywood versus Hollywood among college-going students in Mumbai.

OBJECTIVES:1. To know what college students prefer to watch more- Bollywood or Hollywood2. To understand the factors affecting their preferences in cinema3. To determine which movie industry is appreciated more and why?

HYPOTHESIS: A hypothesis is a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation. On the basis of initial research on the subject, researcher formed these hypotheses before conducting the actual research and survey:

1. Hollywood tickles at the adventurous human spirit while Bollywood movies appeal more to the sentimental side of human nature.

2. People feel Hollywood movies makes more sense and has better content and special effects.3. Hollywood tackles various themes and issues while Bollywood is centered on family, drama, and

music.4. Bollywood believes in ‘masala’ i.e. action, drama, emotion, romance, comedy all in one movie

but Hollywood concentrates more on one genre in one film.

SAMPLE DESIGN

Sample refers to the group of respondents for a research/survey. Sample Design is a definite plan for obtaining a sample from a given population.

The researcher refers to the technique or procedure given below in selecting items of the sample:

The type of sampling method used is Probability Sampling Method wherein each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected. Under probability method, the type used is Restricted Random Sampling wherein the condition of college-going students only in Mumbai is applied. This method is used to increase the efficiency of sampling techniques when sample size is large.

Sample Area: Mumbai

Sample Size: 250

Sampling Universe: College going students in India

Sampling Unit: Geographical: Mumbai City

Social: College-going students

10

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What college students prefer watching more- Bollywood or Hollywood?2. What content do they actually consume more?3. What are the factors affecting students’ preferences in cinema?4. Which movie industry is appreciated more and why?5. Do they wish to see any changes in cinematic content they consume?

LIMITATIONS

1. The survey is conducted online so it couldn’t reach students who don’t have internet access2. The research was restricted only to the urban population of Mumbai. So researcher couldn’t

reach students from other parts of country.3. The results of quantitative research may be statistically significant but are often humanly

insignificant because of no personal opinion4. No interviewer. A lack of a trained interviewer while filling the form to clarify and probe can

possibly lead to less reliable data.

11

Page 12: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

METHOD: Survey through questionnaire

The researcher chose to conduct the survey as ‘questionnaire’ to collect this primary data. Questionnaires can be thought of as a kind of written interview. They can be carried out face to face, by telephone or online. A questionnaire is a tool for obtaining answers to questions by using a form which the respondent fills by himself. It consisted of a number of questions which are systematically compiled and organized in a set of forms. It is mostly used to gather information from widely scattered sources.

Also the language of a questionnaire should be appropriate to the vocabulary of the group of people being studied. Questionnaires can be an effective means of measuring the behaviour, attitudes, preferences, opinions and intentions of relatively large numbers of subjects more cheaply and quickly than other methods.

The researcher found the questionnaire method to be appropriate for the research since the research problem involves views of college-going students. The survey conducted online had 21 questions in it.. The target audience is scattered and vast. Hence, the questionnaire made the research more economical, and made it possible to get reliable and dependable data. Also, this method helped the researchers reach respondents who were not accessible and gave the respondents enough time to answer the questions. This method is more objective and makes analyzing and tabulating data easy.

An important distinction is between open-ended and closed questions. Often a questionnaire uses both open and closed questions to collect data. This is beneficial as it means both quantitative and qualitative data can be obtained. The research topic demanded a structured questionnaire with closed questions.

A structured questionnaire is one which contains definite, concrete and direct questions. This kind of questionnaire is used to initiate a formal enquiry and also to supplement and check the previously accumulated data.

Closed ended type of questionnaire refers to one which contains questions that call for short check responses like marking yes or no answers or choosing an answer from a set of provided responses.

The researchers used surveys to collect data under the questionnaire method. Survey is a non-experimental, descriptive research method. It is used to collect data on phenomena that cannot be directly observed.

This report is based on a preliminary analysis of the primary data that became available to us after collecting 250 sets of responses from our respondents, derived from an online survey. The sample distribution of this sample included respondents from 16-18, 19-21, 22-25 and above. These age groups were chosen for the research to understand the views and opinions of the young minds. The researcher used all close ended questions except one. An open ended question was used to ask the last movie watched by the respondents.

DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATIONS

The researcher conducted a survey to gather more information on this topic. According to the objective and hypothesis, the researcher formed 21 questions. She received 250 responses from different age groups and gender. The questions and the responses are shown in an arranged form in this section.

A variable is a measurable characteristic that varies. It may change from group to group, person-to-person, or even within one person over time. In this research our variables are gender and age. They are the dependent variables. Dependent variables are the variables that affect the entire research, if they are manipulated.

Demographics:

During the research and survey, of nearly 250 correspondents, 22% were between 16-18 years, 68% were of the age group between 19-21 years, around 5% were from the age group of 22-25 years. The researchers conclude that the young and teenage participation of age 19-21 who just entered degree college is more in comparison to others.

Both the female participation and male participation in the survey is around 50% which makes it a balanced chart of opinion by both the sexes.

14

Page 15: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

General questions:

The researcher asked on what students generally watch movies on. Almost 30% prefer watching movies in cinema halls and are ready to spend that much money. The 40.7% said the watch movies on their computers using pen drives and CDs which implies that most of the students want to spend less or just download movie on their PCs. Around 12.9% chose TV as their main source to watch movies.

The researcher asked if their peers affect their movie choices. Almost 25% said ‘yes’ and 43% chose ‘sometimes’ that means peer pressure plays an important role in what kind of movies a teenager might watch. Students go to cinemas with their peers which surely affects the personal choices or they might just go to watch a movie because his/her friends are going to watch that film.

Name the last movie you watched:

The movies watched the most are (in decreasing order of no.s):1. Deadpool2. Neerja3. The Revenant4. Airlift

15

5. Bajirao Mastani6. Sanam Re7. Spotlight

Page 16: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

The researcher asked the name of the last movie watched to know which film was watched most recently and whether it was Hollywood or Bollywood. Among the top seven movies the most watched is ‘Deadpool’-a Hollywood film released on February 14, 2016. In the top seven, there are 4 Bollywood movies and 3 Hollywood movies. Hence, more of the respondents have watched Bollywood films recently rather than Hollywood.

Questions on topic:

When asked how often they watch Hollywood movies, around 36% students chose ‘very often’ and another 365 chose ‘quite often’. That suggests students are very highly exposed to western cinema and they watch it more often than not watch it. Only 15% and 11% students said they watch Hollywood cinema occasionally or rarely, respectively. The small chunk of 1.6% (i.e. only 4 students) said they never watch Hollywood.

Hollywood movies are sometimes considered as resonant with violence and sex. That’s why around 59% prefer to watch Hollywood films with their ‘friends’ and 35.6% prefer to watch them ‘alone’ rather than with family or friends. Only 5.6% (i.e. only 14 out of 250 students) have no problem watching it with family. Most of the students don’t find it comfortable to watch Hollywood with family that means the industry definitely produce some violent & intimate content not preferred by Indian societies.

16

Page 17: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

The researcher gave the respondents a list of 10 classic and new movies from Hollywood and Bollywood

to pick the movies you have watched.

The lists given are as follows:

17

BOLLYWOOD

Sholay Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge 3 idiots Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani Don (the old one) Mr. India Munna Bhai MBBS Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Bajrangi Bhaijaan Hera Pher Haider

HOLLYWOOD

Titanic Harry Potter Mission Impossible Avatar Godfather Inception Pirates of the Caribbean Star Wars Mean Girls Any of the super hero films

(superman, batman etc)

The top 3 watched movies in Bollywood were:

3 idiots 93.2%Munna Bhai MBBS 84%Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani 81.2%

The top 3 watched movies in Hollywood were:

Titanic 88.4%Harry Potter 83.6%Superhero films 78%

The least 3 watched movies in Bollywood were:

Haider 41.6%Don 46.8%Mr. India 62.8%

The least 3 watched movies in Hollywood were:

Mean Girls 29.2%Star Wars 29.2%Godfather 30.8%

Page 18: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

Hence, from the results given above it can be interpreted that if the aggregate of top 3 movies watched of both the industries is compared, Bollywood will definitely get a higher number of percentages. This implies that among the respondents, higher no. of people has watched top 3 of Bollywood as compared to Hollywood.

In the same way, if the aggregate of least watched movies is compared, it shows that among same no. of respondents, less no. of people have watched Hollywood bottom 3 as compared to Bollywood bottom 3. Hence, the viewership of least watched Bollywood bottom 3 is still higher than that of Hollywood.

So, it can be concluded that Bollywood has more viewership in college-going students in Mumbai as compared to Hollywood.

18

Page 19: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

The researcher asked the respondents to rate Bollywood and Hollywood on a scale of 1 to 5. The rating was a personal choice and could be on any basis. As you can see in the results, most students rated Bollywood 3 (50.8%) or 4(24.8%) out of 5. Evidently, Hollywood is rated better in comparison to Bollywood. 50.8% students rated Bollywood 4 out of 5 while another 30% gave it 5 out of 5.

The respondents were given a choice between a ‘Bollywood Masala’ or a ‘Hollywood sci-fi’. A Bollywood masala will be a film with action, romance, music etc with a lot of emotions and entertainment. While a Hollywood sci-fi will be a film with scientific fiction which may or may not be related to reality. Around 40% chose both and 33.6% chose only Hollywood sci-fi. Only 16.5% students chose a proper masala Bollywood film. This indicates that people prefer to watch both or Hollywood more as compared to Bollywood masala only.Shah Rukh Khan or Brad Pitt?Next, respondents were given a choice between Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan or Hollywood actor Brad Pitt. The results came out to be:

- SRK: 30.8%- Brad Pitt: 30.4%- Both: 18.6%- None: 20.2%

19

Page 20: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

20

Page 21: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

The researcher asked the students if they find Hollywood more appealing. Only 4 out of 250 said no and didn't choose to answer the question ahead. The three qualities, according to the responses, students like most about the Hollywood are:

- More creativity & adventurous (67.5%)- Better storyline (59%)- Good direction (53%)

These are the qualities which are supposed to give an edge to Hollywood against Bollywood in people’s minds. Also, what respondents considerably liked about Hollywood films is the special effects used in them.

According to one of the hypothesis, Bollywood believes in ‘masala’ i.e. action, drama, emotion, romance, comedy all in one movie (90% movies are entirely the same) but, Hollywood concentrates more on one genre in one film. The researcher asked the same question to respondents. More than half (54.4%) agreed to the statement while around 33% strongly agreed to it. 9.2 % had no opinion on the subject & almost 3% disagreed to the fact that Bollywood serves all 5-6 genres in one film. That suggests the hypothesis is proved right.

21

Page 22: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

According to other hypothesis, Hollywood is generally supposed to produce films with better content and special effects as compared to our Indian film industry, Bollywood. The researcher asked the respondents whether they want Bollywood to adopt changes inspired by Hollywood. A whopping 47.4% said yes to changes in a large extent while other 44.6% said yes to some extent. Around 4% said no to any changes in Bollywood films and liked the way they are. 3.6% were not sure of if Bollywood needs changes or not.

The researcher gave a situational question to students asking if they got the ticket to watch one movie for free, which one will they watch. A huge no. of 53.2% i.e. 132 students said they will prefer to watch a Hollywood movie over Bollywood. 23.2% chose to watch Bollywood while another 23.6% said they will prefer to use the money for something else rather than watching any film. This suggests that, even for free, most of the students will prefer to watch a Hollywood over Bollywood.

22

Page 23: Understanding the preferences of cinema bollywood and hollywood among college students - mmr project

FINDINGS

Hypothesis 1: Hollywood tickles at the adventurous human spirit while Bollywood movies appeal more to the sentimental side of human nature.

Almost 67% respondents chose ‘more creative and adventurous’ when asked why do they find Hollywood more appealing. This was the highest chosen option among all the choices which proves the first hypothesis right.

Hypothesis 2: People feel Hollywood movies makes more sense and has better content and special effects. Almost 70% chose Hollywood or both when asked which one has good content and story line. Only mere 8.4% students said that Bollywood too has good content.

Hypothesis 3: Hollywood tackles various themes and issues while Bollywood is centered on family, drama, and music.

Hypothesis 4: Bollywood believes in ‘masala’ i.e. action, drama, emotion, romance, comedy all in one movie (90% movies are entirely the same) but, Hollywood concentrates more on one genre in one film.

CONCLUSION

As the world has become a smaller community through global net & immense connectivity, people all over world get exposed to all kind of media from other parts too. Youngsters in India have their reach to all kind of cinemas in the world. The most popular being- Bollywood and Hollywood. The research shows that the Bollywood films are more watched among college-going students but their preferences are more inclined towards Hollywood movies as compared to Bollywood. They want to watch Hollywood but, ironically, they are consuming Bollywood content more which suggests that although Hollywood isn’t the highly watched cinema in India but it, definitely, is more appreciated in terms of- better story line, creativity, special effects, good direction & acting, and good technology used overall. Most of the youngsters want to watch better films with good yet entertaining content. Research concluded that Bollywood needs to bring about a few changes but with time, Bollywood has also presented far greater variance in quality. The best mainstream stuff is about as good as Hollywood when it comes to serious drama, dark satire, gritty crime and true musicals. With the change in script writing, direction and cinematographic style, a change has been witnessed in the audience for Bollywood movies.
