How we got here
• 1990: Wayne Excel: support for at-risk students
– Mandatory orientation, intrusive advising, early notification of academic progress, individualized tutoring, supplemental instruction
• 2000: Retention Efforts at Wayne State University: Review and Recommendations – Move from persistence to student success
– Led to the creation of the Academic Success Center, Office for Teaching and Learning, enhancement of Early Academic Assessment, development of STARS
• 2006-2008: Faculty Task Force on Student Retention – 16 recommendations (culture, data monitoring, faculty involvement,
orientation, high expectations, expert teaching of remedial courses, advising, financial aid, peer mentoring) which inform our current efforts.

• 2010: Retention Implementation Task Force
– Programmatic Improvements in six key areas: • Curriculum, Advising, Teaching and Learning; Academic Readiness; First
year/Learning Communities; Financial Aid
– Conceptual funding plan to invest $4.0 M in FY2012 increasing commitment to a total of $9.0 M by FY2015
• 2012: Student Success Initiative approved by Board of Governors − Holistic evaluation of students and new admissions standards
− 2013: Greater Retention and Achievement through Diversity − Diversity Initiative approved by the Board of Governors
− Announced to WSU campus Fall 2013.

• Ellucian DegreeWorks purchased: – online degree audit and academic planning
– Will promote better scheduling of classes to meet students needs.
• SMART Check: Informed decision making reducing dropped classes.
• Undergraduate Research: – Number of applicants & conference participants up 50%
– Coordinating between colleges, UROP office, OVPR, and TRIO programs to promote UG research for all.

• Our first-year retention rates are competitive relative to ACT. – Students need support through graduation.
• Graduation Rates have increased but more progress is needed.
• Support for students of color, particularly African-Americans, is essential. – Increasing focus on narrowing achievement gaps.
