THE UNIVERSITY

Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is over 250 whichgives the University Campus a cosmopolitan character.

The teaching departments of the University are grouped into thefollowing six faculties:-

The University has about 640 teachers of which 107 are Ph.D.

degree holders, 110 are doing Ph.D. abroad and 37 are going through

indigenous Ph.D. programme.

The university has recently set up a Campus at Faisalabad in a rentedpremises while requisite infrastructure at the actual Campus site iscoming up. The first batch has graduated from Faisalabad Campus

UET has established a campus at Kala Shah Kaku known as UniversityCity Campus where admission started in 2007.

The five years degree programme in B. Sc. Architectural engineeringemphasises the scientific and engineering aspects of management andconstruction of buildings. It is focused to produce professional engineersspecializing in analysis, construction and operation of engineering sub-systems for building and facilities. These include structural, electrical andlighting, acoustical, plumbing, fire protection, heating, ventilation and Air-conditioning systems and other mechanical services.

The goal of the programme is to provide an education in fundamentals of engineering

and their application, which will help give each graduate the ability to practice asregistered professional engineer in a variety of areas, both public and private, relatedto the planning, construction and operation of buildings.

The Architectural engineering programme is designed for students who areparticularly interested in the engineering aspects of building design. Theeducational objective of the five-year architectural engineering programme isto prepare the student with fundamental engineering competence in the

analysis and design of buildings and their systems. Specifically, the studentmust be able to understand and apply engineering fundamentals and designprinciples for engineering the infrastructure of architecture that infrastructurebeing structural, mechanical, and electrical building systems and all the sub-disciplines related to these primary designations.

As important members of building design teams, they must be able to createengineering designs that will fulfill the economic, safety, stability, strength andaesthetic requirements of a project.

Included in the academic programme are exercises in many of the basiccourses beginning in the first year and continuing through the fifth year todevelop skills in the engineering design process. The last course in thissequence is a comprehensive Architectural Engineering Project, a culminationof all the previous design experiences from the first four and one-half years ofthe curriculum. Thus Architectural Engineers must have a working ability withtotal building and system design concepts.

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE

The SoAAd Department of Architecture has a history approaching half acentury. Established in 1962, it has the distinction of offering the first-degreeprogram of Architecture in the Country. Thus, the Department has been afundamental contributor towards the founding and establishment of the

profession of Architecture in Pakistan By now it has a large body of alumni,and through them, it has the honor and credit of shaping a significant part ofthe current built environment in urban Pakistan

Over the decades, the Department has developed unmatched expertise invarious facets of the profession of Architecture. At present, in terms ofqualifications, as well as width and breadth of relevant knowledge base, itsfaculty far surpasses any other school/department of architecture in the

country. The Department, thus has not only maintained its leading role inarchitectural education, it is set to expand its frontiers even further through itsflowering in the form of School of Architecture and Design (SoAAD).

The working environment within the Department is pleasant and intimate. Thestudents spend a significant part of their working in Design Studios which,coupled with low student intake, ensures high degree of interaction betweenstudents, and between students and staff. More than Forty years old traditionof co-education within the Department, and a high proportion of femaleteaching staff ensures healthy gender relationships. At present, the genderbalance within the Department is strongly tilted towards female students(about 70 to 80%).

BACHELOR DEGREE PROGRAMS IN ARCHITECTURE (B. ARCH)

At present the Department runs a 5-year program of studies leading to aprofessional degree in Architecture (B.Arch.). Graduates of this program willhave fulfilled all licensing requirements of Pakistan Council of Architects andTown Planners (PCATP), and shall be able to practice Architecture anywherein Pakistan. Students registered for this program will also have the option togain specialization as indicated above.

The program of study is highly demanding and only those students arerecommended to apply who are willing to work long hours. Furthermore, asignificant component of studies involve fieldwork, where students arerequired to visit construction sites, conduct field surveys, and join out ofstation study tours. B.Arch. degree requirements also include 16 weeks ofinternship in a professional establishment, which would typically take placeduring summer vacations.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS IN ARCHITECTURE

The postgraduate program in architecture was instituted in 1990. By now, ithas matured and includes M. Arch, M. Phil and Ph.D. programs. The M. Archis primarily a taught course though its research content is also significant;both one-year full time and two-year part time variants are offered. The M.

Arch program is primarily geared towards professionals who wish to broaden

their professional perspectives.

The two-year M. Phil, and Ph.D. programs are by research only. These areessentially intended for academics or mature architects who have developedan interest in some particular aspect of the built environment that they whichto explore in some depth.Further details are provided in the Postgraduate Prospectus of the university.

A thorough understanding of design principles and practice is gainedthrough design project work and industry placement.

The work environment at the department is very friendly and comfortable, withmore than forty percent female students. There is strong interaction betweenstudents and teachers. The goal is to have designers who can synthesizetechnology and aesthetics in the service of human need. Graduates areanticipated to become leaders in the chosen field as self-starters making things

The engineering curricula in the University are supplemented with courses inIslamic Studies. These are meant to appraise the students of the cultural,political, economic and other aspects of Islamic Ideology, to make them realizethe richness of their heritage and enable them to be not only competentengineers but also staunch Muslims.

Courses Offered

For the realization of these objectives the subject of Islamic studies wasintroduced in the University as an optional subject in 1961. In the subsequentyears, due to its importance the subject was made compulsory for all the Muslimstudents and its scope was progressively enlarged. Now the departmentteaches Islamic Studies to the Engineering classes as well as Architecture andCity & Regional Planning.

In 1982 the Government of Pakistan prescribed Pakistan Studies as anessential component of the syllabi at all levels of education. Since then theDepartment is teaching this subject also.

Research and Other ActivitiesThe teachers of the department are engaged in writing research papers andarticles on the socio-economic problems of the country and their solutions.
