And just think about the possibilities for working remotely. We’ve already seen a rise in freelancers and “digital nomads”. With the right skills, you could find yourself working for global companies from just about any location.

‘There’s a huge cohort that will be highly skilled, in demand and able to shape their future,’ says Dr McKenzie, ‘and they’ll flourish in this environment.’

The human factorSo what are the right skills? Well, like we mentioned, jobs of the future need a human kind of clever. The kind that’s flexible and creative. That can adapt to an ever-changing job market and find solutions to the most complex of challenges.

Forward-thinking coursesEvery one of our courses is designed to prepare you for the future of work, and we’re constantly creating new ones to make sure we’re at the forefront of research and industry advances. In fact, some of our newest courses are specifically focused on the possibilities and challenges that technology creates.

You could become a cybersecurity expert and protect millions of people from internet bandits. Or maybe you’ll use your knowledge of data to turn a start-up into a major business player.

Interested in finding out more? Take a look at some of our newest undergraduate courses:

y Bachelor of Business Analytics (see page 46)

y Bachelor of Cybersecurity (see page 71)

y Bachelor of Cybersecurity/Bachelor of Psychological Science (see page 71)

y Bachelor of Digital Business (see page 49).

Looking forward, you might be interested in some of our postgraduate options. You could do a course in financial technology, digital health or healthcare analytics, or extend your knowledge in business analytics or digital business.

At La Trobe, you’ll develop these skills from the first day of your degree, with passionate mentors and a focus on more than just the technical.

You’ll graduate with the kind of clever skills that make you stand out: resilience, passion, curiosity and empathy. You’ll be highly appealing to employers and ready for any changes.

In the future, jobs that need creative thinking, emotional intelligence and face-to-face interactions will continue to thrive. And with a degree from La Trobe, so will you.

The changing world of work

If you’re thinking about studying, you’re in an unprecedented position. Now more than ever, you need to prepare for the changing world of work.

Some jobs will be affected more than others. Jobs that can be done by a computer or robot are most at risk, like those in factories, shops and office administration.

But some jobs will have an increase in demand. These jobs need a human kind of clever, and that’s what we teach at La Trobe.

The possibilities are exciting, and new careers have already emerged. Medical nanotechnologists. Virtual reality engineers. Drone pilots. And by 2030, who knows what jobs you could do?

Careers that thriveIt’s an exciting time to be working, with technology opening new worlds of possibilities. But what do these really look like?

Well, imagine a nurse who needs to deliver medical supplies to patients. An automated delivery cart could do just that.

Dr Fiona McKenzie, Australian Futures Project co-founder and La Trobe alumna, thinks this a good thing.

‘This can create the opportunity for the nurse to spend more time sitting with the patient, measuring blood pressure and providing better care.’

Skills for success

In reality, it’s probably a bit of all three. While we haven’t worked out how to manufacture luck (yet), we have worked out how to help with the rest. In fact, incorporating street smarts into our business degrees is something we’ve been doing for a while at the La Trobe Business School.

Start-up successTake, for example, start-ups and small businesses. More and more, students and new graduates want to start their own businesses. And they’re doing it. More than 80 per cent of start-ups in Australia are founded by recent university graduates.

Taking the lead, La Trobe Business School teaches the skills entrepreneurs need: design thinking, start-up methods and business model creation. You’ll learn from industry experts with plenty of experience in the field, and work placements will take your skills to the next level.

With this kind of support, La Trobe Business School graduates have everything it takes to succeed. Just ask Jarryd Burns, co-founder of Thankyou, a highly successful social enterprise. Jarryd started Thankyou with two friends while studying at La Trobe in 2008, graduating with a Bachelor of Business in 2010.

‘10 years ago we started a bottled water company where 100 per cent of the profits go to aid and development programs. It’s been an amazing journey so far. The skills I learnt at La Trobe were extremely useful in starting the business.’

As the future of work unfolds before our eyes, business people around the globe are adapting to meet the demands of an increasingly global economy. We’ve all heard about the high-flying innovators, the Steve Jobs of the world who can start a successful business from mum’s garage. But what does it take to make it in the modern world of business? Is it street smarts, book smarts or just luck?

With the right skills, a strong team and an entrepreneurial spirit, Jarryd steered Thankyou from small beginnings to generate over $5.8 million for people in need around the world. He’s one of La Trobe’s most Distinguished Alumni (yes, he got an award), but he’s also just a smart guy with a good education and a strong vision. It’s easy to imagine, could this also be you?

La Trobe Accelerator ProgramWith a bit of help from our Accelerator Program, you could turn that great idea into a successful business. Designed to promote the development of start-ups, the program offers business insights and tailored, dedicated support to help budding entrepreneurs – like yourself – pursue their goals and ventures. And if you’re a successful applicant, you’ll receive up to $20,000 in funding. Equity-free.

Making connectionsIf big business is more your style, you’ll know that when it comes to opportunities, impressing the right people is key. La Trobe Business School has strong relationships with companies across business, accounting, sports management and tourism/hospitality, with contacts like Optus, KPMG, Deloitte, AFL and the Atlantic Group. You won’t just get to meet these contacts, you’ll get to work with them. Through industry placements, networking events and the chance to work

‘The skills I learnt at La Trobe were extremely useful in starting the business.’

Jarryd BurnsLa TrobeDistinguishedAlumni

with industry to solve real business problems, you’ll graduate from La Trobe Business School with a healthy list of contacts and plenty of potential job prospects.

In modern business, it also pays to understand how technology and business meet. Our new industry-led Bachelor of Digital Business is designed to do just that. You’ll hone your analytical skills and develop an entrepreneurial mindset that will help businesses of the future identify commercial opportunities, solve problems and drive innovation.

A world of opportunities One of our most inspirational graduates, Bronwyn Curtis OBE, shows just how far a Business School degree can take you.

‘I studied economics. It was the best thing I ever did. Coming to La Trobe gave me the confidence to go off and do something else. I became the first woman to be Chief Economist in the City of London.’

Bronwyn went on to achieve incredible things, including a range of female-first executive positions, and is now serving as the Non-Executive Director at JP Morgan. And then there’s this…

‘We went to the Palace, the Queen gave me my OBE, and I look back and think, here was a girl from Fitzroy State School and Uni High. And I think throughout my whole career, doing the same thing as everyone else isn’t what I do. You will hit glass ceilings, but don’t keep beating your head against that glass ceiling. Move sideways. Do something else. Take a risk. You can do anything.’

Aspire Early Admissions Program

Easing the pressure before uni beginsAfter years of involvement with the Cobram Scouts in Victoria’s Murray River region, Amabel Grinter’s loyalty paid off when she successfully applied for Aspire. She received a conditional offer for La Trobe’s Bachelor of Agricultural Science before she’d even finished Year 12.

‘Aspire was like having a security blanket. As an early entry program, it took the pressure off my Year 12 exams,’ says Amabel.

Aspire also helped Amabel find her feet before the semester started.

‘To visit the campus and meet other Aspire students was awesome. It meant things weren’t so foreign when I showed up on my first day.’

For Stephen Leitch, helping out with community sports was an unexpected gateway to uni. He got an early offer into a Bachelor of Accounting through Aspire.

‘I’d helped out with cricket coaching and football umpiring in my community. When I found out this could help me get into uni, I applied for Aspire.’

If you’ve ever volunteered for charity or organised an event at school, you’ll know what it feels like to help out the community. Giving back feels good. But did you know it could also help you get into uni?Our Aspire Early Admissions Program rewards students who give back with early conditional offers into La Trobe. It’s our way of saying thanks for looking out for the community and recognising there’s more to success than your ATAR. There’s also leadership, getting involved and thinking about others.

Since 2014, we’ve made early offers to nearly 9,000 Year 12 and mature-age students. From fundraising to sports coaching, these students have given their time generously, and we’re proud to now have them on team La Trobe. Here are some of their stories.

Opening doors at uni through volunteeringAs a student at La Trobe, Amabel immersed herself in campus life, volunteering her time to tutor and mentor other students. This gave her the chance to develop leadership skills and confidence, and she made plenty of friends along the way.

Stephen also continued to give back, volunteering as a goal umpire at the La Trobe University Football Club. This led to exciting opportunities.

‘I was approached to take on the role as Vice President of the footy club. I was only 20, so it was a big deal.’

Looking to the future Now a La Trobe graduate, Amabel is working to combine her passion for community with her Agricultural Science degree, and has just completed a six-month stint working on a large dairy farm in America.

Stephen’s work in the community helped him get a graduate job at Crowe Horwarth, an accounting firm. ‘Most employers want to know about extra-curricular activities to find out who you are and how you’ll fit into the workplace. You’ve got to stand out and have a point of difference.’

Ready to apply? If you’ve given back to your community in any way, you could be eligible for Aspire. Applications open 1 June and close 31 August.

Key terms

HELPAn Australian Government loan scheme to help eligible students enrolled in a CSP pay their student contributions.

HonoursHonours studies are advanced studies attached to undergraduate degrees, giving you a higher qualification than a three-year degree. Many people do Honours so they can go on to postgraduate studies, and most La Trobe undergraduate courses offer Honours. Depending on your course, this may involve an additional year of study, although some courses have it built in.

MajorA sequence of related subjects spread over the duration of an undergraduate course. You’ll usually undertake at least one subject from your major each semester, and you have to pass each subject in order to move on to the next one in the sequence.

Non-Year 12 applicantsThere are many options for applicants who are not current Year 12 students. These include the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), Work Recognition Program and Tertiary Preparation Program.

PathwaysThe different educational options leading to a particular qualification. For example, Year 12 is one pathway to a uni course. Year 12 to TAFE to uni is another pathway. Read more on pages 20 and 21.

PostgraduateThe second level of university study. Usually, you can only begin postgraduate studies once you’ve completed an undergraduate degree.

PrerequisitesThe subjects you must have completed at school (and/or any other qualifications you need) to be eligible for consideration in a specific uni course.

TAFETechnical and Further Education.

UndergraduateThe first level of university study. This usually refers to a three-year single Bachelor’s degree, although it also includes Honours studies, which can take an additional year. There are also double degrees that usually take at least four years full-time.

VETVocational Education and Training.

Industry placementsIndustry placements integrate educational theory and workplace experience, preparing you to be work ready, world ready and future ready.

Advanced StandingIf you’ve done relevant, formally recognised studies at another uni or TAFE, you may get credit – or Advanced Standing – for some or all your studies when you enrol at uni. This means you may finish your degree faster.

Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR)VTAC or UAC gives you an ATAR (a number between 0.00 and 99.95) to rank your Year 12 results against other students’ results.

Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)When you’re offered a CSP, the government subsidises your course fees and you only need to pay for part of your tuition – known as the ’student contribution amount’. All domestic undergraduate places at La Trobe are CSPs.

Core subjectsThe compulsory subjects in any given course.

Entry requirements These include general entry requirements like English language and course entry. Course prerequisites and other extra requirements such as interviews and portfolios are outlined on our website: latrobe.edu.au/courses

Offers of admission into La Trobe courses are made on the basis of academic merit, likelihood of success and sometimes the number of places available.
