MELBOURNE

Melbourne is the multicultural heart of Australia – an international city that is home to people from all around the world. It is a city built for exploring: Coffee shops, galleries, music and amazing food can be found down every lane and alley in the city centre. There is always something happening in Melbourne, from cultural festivals and world-class arts performances to international sporting events like the Australian Open tennis tournament.

You can enjoy live music and soak up the sun at Federation Square, or ride a bike along the Yarra River. You can also visit the Melbourne Zoo and discover some of Australia's amazing wildlife, or spend a day exploring the Queen Victoria Market tasting fresh local produce.

MELBOURNE BURWOOD CAMPUSThe Melbourne Burwood Campus is Deakin’s largest and has a lively and diverse on-campus culture.

Distinguished by its striking modern architecture, the campus has open and inviting spaces for studying and socialising. In addition to excellent student service facilities and an exhaustive library, the campus features a professional motion capture lab; moot court; exercise physiology labs; drama and television studios; food and nutrition lab; and IT gaming facilities.

The campus is a short trip to the centre of Melbourne. Its location gives students access to the best of city living as well as the sense of community and relaxed feel of a suburban setting.

Some of the most popular undergraduate courses offered at the Melbourne Burwood Campus are in the areas of commerce, business, environmental science, information technology, nursing, and media and communication.

Melbourne is a safe, smart and sociable city, and it continuously

earns the title as the most liveable city in the world (Economist

Intelligence Unit, 2011–2016).

LIVE WHERE YOU STUDYDeakin has on-campus accommodation at our Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool campuses. See page 11 for more information about accommodation opportunities.

GEELONG GEELONG WATERFRONT CAMPUSLocated on the shores of the beautiful Corio Bay, the Geelong Waterfront Campus is positioned in the centre of Geelong’s business district. The campus provides a unique look at Australian heritage: Historic buildings are combined with modern design and convenience to produce a unique and cutting-edge campus space.

So perhaps it is not surprising that the Geelong Waterfront Campus is home to Deakin’s architecture and creative arts studios. Alongside a full range of accessible student services, the campus features nursing and health teaching facilities, including a purpose-built occupational therapy laboratory and nursing simulation environments. The campus is also home to new facilities for business and law students.

Geelong Waterfront students love the central location, as well as the creative, modern areas to meet with friends or study. A free shuttle bus connects students with the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

Geelong combines the best of city living with a more relaxed atmosphere.Located just an hour outside of Melbourne, Geelong is the second largest city in the Australian State of Victoria.

In this dynamic and safe coastal town you will find a spectacular waterfront lined with some of Geelong's best cafes and restaurants; head to the surf coast where students take a break from their studies to enjoy a swim or surf; or check out Skilled Stadium football oval where the Geelong Cats – an Australian league football team and partner of Deakin – play their exciting games.

Geelong is a community that gladly welcomes students. You will find Deakin students working in many of the local business and enjoying the wide range of activities and facilities that the town has to offer.

WANT MORE CAMPUS INFO?Campus maps and more information can be found at deakin.edu.au/int-campus-life. If you would like to book a tour at one of Deakin's campuses, you can email [email protected].

The Waurn Ponds Campus is home to the Deakin Medical School, the new CADET* engineering centre, the REACH regional health hub and Deakin’s Geelong Innovation Precinct – all featuring the latest tech and tools.

The brand new Elite Sports Precinct has extensive facilities for sport students and community athletics. The Cloud Campus is Deakin's fastest-growing campus and is ideal for students who choose to study wholly online. Your classroom in the cloud is where you will take classes, submit assessments and participate in discussions. Deakin's Cloud Campus allows you to study in your own time and in any location. Everything is available online whenever and from wherever you need it. Take classes while you’re on-the-go, login and ask questions, and contribute to discussion forums – cloud learning adapts to your lifestyle.

As a Cloud Campus student you:

• are taught by the same lecturers and tutors as campus students

• get remote access to all of Deakin’s student support services and activities such as an online orientation when you first start

• connect to specialist careers advisers and language and learning advisers who can help you with course direction and study skills.

Please note that some cloud units and courses do have compulsory on-campus components, which may include examinations and practicals.

WARRNAMBOOL CAMPUSDeakin’s Warrnambool Campus is set on the banks of the picturesque Hopkins River, close to surf beaches and popular tourist attractions. The Warrnambool Campus is a close-knit community, a place where students and lecturers really have the opportunity to get to know each other and work closely together.

That sense of community extends to the whole of Warrnambool, providing support to new students in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. But for those looking for an occasional jolt of big city excitement, trains run four times daily to Melbourne.

Courses in nursing are amongst the most popular at Warrnambool for international students, and dedicated facilities provide nursing students with a practical, hands-on learning experience. And being located near a number of unique aquatic environments makes the Warrnambool Campus an ideal location for marine biology studies.

CLOUD CAMPUS

Warrnambool presents a different side of Australia. Set along one of the country's most scenic coastlines, Warrnambool is the place to be for exploring Australia’s famously unique plant and animal habitats.

Warrnambool is also a prosperous country town that offers comfortable living and a cultural scene hosted by a great regional gallery and arts centre. Cruise up the Hopkins River or sit down to some excellent Southeast Asian cuisine on Liebig Street. Warrnambool has plenty of options for an active student, and the small town feel creates a sense of community that would be harder to find in a big city.

For students (and parents) concerned about expenses, Warrnambool offers a lower cost of living than Melbourne and Geelong without sacrificing quality.

Courses and units on the Cloud Campus are taught

by the same teachers as on the other campuses. Classes are

recorded and posted online and you will work in real time with other students and staff using

innovative digital tools.

ACADEMIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS deakin.edu.au/int-requirements

Deakin's degree programs have entry requirements that you must meet in order to gain entry into your course of choice. Each course at Deakin has its own academic entry requirements that applicants are expected to meet in order to gain entry.

For entry into undergraduate degree programs, Deakin recognises secondary education qualifications from many countries around the world. Australian Foundation studies and International Baccalaureate studies are eligible for consideration for entry by Deakin admissions.

Please be advised that there are other requirements that students must meet in order to gain entry into a Deakin course. You will need to show that you meet the English language requirements for your course of choice. For more on English language requirements turn to page 19 of this Guide.

In addition, you will need to submit sufficient documentation to support your application for admission into Deakin University. For some degrees, applicants may have to submit a folio or take part in an audition or interview. You can learn more about how to apply on page 23 of this Guide.

Academic admission requirementsThe next three pages contain tables of academic admissions requirements for entry in 2018. Each table represents one of the four faculties at Deakin University.

To use these tables:

1. First find the degree program that interests you most. Turn to page 25 of this Guide to start exploring all of Deakin's undergraduate courses for international students.

2. Once you have found your course of choice, return here to look at the appropriate table. Check the admissions requirements for courses in your discipline.

If you did your previous studies in a country not represented in the tables, please see the box on page 16 of this Guide called 'Other country requirements' for more information.

Rural and regional focus There is currently a significant medical workforce shortage throughout Australia, particularly in rural, regional and outer metropolitan locations. To help address this, many of our health sciences and allied health courses have a rural and regional focus, giving you a broader perspective on your studies. You can undertake placements in rural and regional locations, to complement knowledge and skills gained from metropolitan settings.

WHAT IS ALLIED HEALTH?Allied health is a broad term used to describe health professionals who are not doctors, dentists and nurses. The allied health workforce in Australia includes health professionals and other technicians, assistants and support workers who work in fields such as social work, optometry and occupational therapy. An allied health professional usually has a direct patient-care role, which may also apply to public health in general. Allied Health Professions Australia (AHPA) is the national voice of allied health in Australia.

Deakin law graduates in demandDeakin Law School graduates have an international reputation for their well-rounded skill set and adaptability and excellence in a variety of professional careers. Our graduates perform well in a very competitive employment environment, with seasonal traineeships at a record high. Some students also go on to pursue advanced studies internationally.

Practical focusThe legal profession is highly commercialised and lawyers are increasingly required to provide clients with practical, commercial advice (in addition to pure legal advice). Our focus on experiential education builds these skills in addition to disciplinary knowledge, giving you an edge upon graduation. Our clinical program offers units in new business ventures, commercial law, employment law, family law, and criminal law. Students interview real clients under the supervision of qualified solicitors, conduct research on legal issues, and offer advice where appropriate. They also have the opportunity to attend court proceedings in some instances.

WHAT CAN I STUDY?

Laws Law at Deakin provides the robust training and recognised qualifications you need to launch your career as a first-class Victorian Legal Admissions Board legal practitioner. VIS MOOTThe Vis Moot and the Vis (East) Moot run annually in Vienna and Hong Kong. Deakin Law School is one of a few schools in the world that have been crowned World Champions – Deakin won the international competition two times. The Moot is a mock-arbitration competition requiring students to research two areas of international commercial law (international commercial arbitration and the international sale of goods) in detail as they apply to a hypothetical case; prepare two sets of written legal arguments (one for each side in the dispute); and then prepare for the oral rounds – arguing the case against law schools from around the world. It’s an incredible learning opportunity for our law students.

FUTURE PRACTICEDeakin’s Bachelor of Laws (LLB) meets the academic requirements to become an Australian lawyer as set by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board (VLAB). In addition to completing an approved LLB degree, a person wishing to practise as a lawyer is required to complete a 12-month traineeship, or a six-month legal practice course.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSHow do I know what fees I need to pay? All deposit fees you are required to pay (including the tuition fee) will be listed in your Offer Letter. You will need to pay the tuition fee and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) if studying on-campus.

If there is a difference between your initial course payment and the actual fee liability generated by your enrolment, you will need to pay any outstanding amount; over payments will be credited to your next trimester’s fees.

If I don’t meet the admission requirements for Deakin University, what are my options? If you do not meet the academic admission requirements for Deakin, you should consider completing a course at one of our pathway institution providers, which may allow you direct admission into the second year of certain Deakin programs. Further information about these pathway options can be found on page 17 of this Guide.

If you do not meet the English language admission requirements for Deakin, you should consider an English language course at the Deakin University English Language Institute (DUELI).
