Dear Parishioners,
The wait is over!
It has been a tense week for some people leading up to our Provincial
Chapter. I must admit I was anxious myself, as I didn’t know where I would
be for the next three years. I have learnt a lesson to surrender and trust in
God.
As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, the friars met this week for a Pro-
vincial Chapter to elect a Minister Provincial and his Council. This newly
formed Council then had to decide
where each friar would be assigned to for
the next three years. The results of the
Chapter are as followed:
The new Provincial Council includes the
following friars: Fr Gerard O’Demsey
(Provincial), Fr Julian Messina (Vicar), Fr
Lam Vu (2nd councillor), Fr Thomas McFad-
den (3rd Councillor) and Br Michael
O’Dwyer (4th councillor).
The new Fraternity at Dutton Park include the fol-
lowing friars: Fr Lam Vu (Parish Priest of St Mary’s Parish & Administrator of
Dutton Park Parish); Fr Martin Situmorang (Guardian and Indonesian Chap-
lain); Fr Bollar Barretto (Assistant Parish Priest); Fr James Grant (Postulant
Director); Bishop Joseph Oudeman, and Fr Thomas McFadden (Vocation
Director).
The following friars have also been reassigned: Fr Fernanto Pananghat Jo-
se to Hawthorn, Melbourne; Fr John Nguyen to Newtown, Adelaide; and Fr
Pio Hendi to Leichhardt, Sydney. All the friars will move to their new com-
munity by the end of January 2018. We will have an official farewell for
these three friars in January 2018.
The above appointments are
for three years until the next
Chapter. I want to thank all
you for praying for us during our
Chapter.
God bless you all.

TWO MINUTE CATECHISM
Question: In John 3:5, Jesus says “no one can enter the
kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.”
So it seems that unbaptised children, Muslims, Jews, et al.,
cannot go to heaven. I am personally worried about my
five unbaptised grandchildren.
Answer: The Church teaches the necessity of baptism for
salvation in concordance with the Holy Scriptures. Thus, a
person who wilfully refuses to do so, knowing the require-
ments for faith in Jesus and the reception of baptism,
cannot be saved.
However, not everyone does fully know or under-
stand necessity of baptism and faith in Jesus. Some, as
you note, are young children who cannot reasonably
know and whose parents have failed in their duties. Oth-
ers may be raised in largely non-Catholic settings or even
in settings that are hostile to the Christian faith. God does
not absolutely require of people what they cannot rea-
sonably know. Thus we presume that since God is just, he
can and does deal with these sorts of situations in ways
known to him, and that people will be judged on what
they could have reasonably known. Though we cannot
know absolutely of the fate of unbaptised children (since
God has not revealed it), or of adults, we can be confi-
dent that God, who wants to save all, will deal with them
justly and reasonably.
Jesus’ clear teaching, however, on the necessity
of baptism must not be lightly cast aside, either, simply
based on reasonable speculation by us. You, as a grand-
father, should firmly admonish your own children of the
need to have their children baptized at once, and warn
them that their own salvation may be at stake if they fail
to do so. Mere encouragement, if it is not enough, may
need to give way to insistence and vigorous warning. You
may do well to consult with your parish priest and other
family members to turn this rather unfortunate state of
affairs into an evangelical and teaching moment.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 62:2-8

Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13
Jesus told this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of
heaven will be like this: Ten bridesmaids took their
lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them
were foolish and five were sensible: the foolish ones did
take their lamps, but they brought no oil, whereas the
sensible ones took flasks of oil as well as their lamps. The
bridegroom was late, and they all grew drowsy and fell
asleep. But at midnight there was a cry, “The bride-
groom is here! Go out and meet him.” At this, all those
bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps, and
the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, “Give us
some of your oil: our lamps are going out.” But they
replied, “There may not be enough for us and for you;
you had better go to those who sell it and buy some
for yourselves.” They had gone off to buy it when the
bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in
with him to the wedding hall and the door was closed.
The other bridesmaids arrived later. “Lord, Lord,” they
said “open the door for us.” But he replied, “I tell you
solemnly, I do not know you.” So stay awake, because
you do not know either the day or the hour.’
Communion Antiphon: Cf. Ps 22: 1-2
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me
repose,
near restful waters he leads me.
