Ballroom IIIStudent-Driven Learning: “The Independent Project”

In the fall of 2010, eight students created a school-within-a-school and founded The Independent Project. “The idea for The Independent Project came from a student’s own experience of high school, and his observations of the experiences of his peers. The two main things he felt were missing from many high school classrooms were engagement and mastery. Research by Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi on engagement suggested that if students have more control over what they are learning, they will be more engaged, excited, and committed to their studies. He felt that it was important for the school to be focused on methods rather than specific topics, having students work like actual scientists, mathematicians, or writers.” (The White Paper, www.theindependentproject.org) This session will: illuminate the opportunities and challenges a school experiences as it steps into new methods of learning and teaching; discuss the role faculty plays in student directed learning; and share the steps taken to create this learning environment in a public high school.

Specific information/activity that details what is involved in a mediation training will be the focus of the session.

Shutters Dining RoomToxic Mixture: Teens, Drugs, and Alcohol

Children spend nearly a third of their waking time in school and much of the peer pressure they feel regarding whether or not to use substances occurs during this time. School administrators should keep up with the latest ATOD trends so that they can better identify and access support services for students who may be abusing drugs and/or alcohol. In this workshop, program participants will be updated on the latest significant drug trends, become aware of signs and symptoms of use, evaluate resiliency factors that help protect kids from substance use and be given resources should a family be in need of addiction treatment services.

ChathamHigh Stakes Tests and the Non-English-Proficient High School Students’Assessment

Addressing the needs of non-English-proficient students when the students come into our district in primary or middle school years or If they come to us well prepared in their own language is relatively easy. A different challenge is presented by students who enter our schools in 10 or 11th grade. How do we address the issue of academic credit required for graduation if work was completed in Farsi, or Spanish or Portuguese? And MCAS or other high-stakes testing, do we teach biology as the language or the discipline? Our district has been creative, collaborative in its approach and most importantly has paid attention to the details while staying in touch with parents and guardians. We will share our experience and facilitate discussion about best approaches.

Workshop Presenter: Daniel Roy, Principal, Wilbraham Middle School
