A Better Way to Build Ever need an additional week before energization? How much money can you save by reducing initial startup time while your testers are at your substation? Ulteig’s Substation Test Lab helps you and your projects avoid many of the pitfalls of in-field testing, saving time and money.

In our lab, we pretest SCADA programs, PAC configurations, relay settings, communication networks, and parameters passed via multiple protocols. Our engineers design, configure and test programs, as well as relay settings, communication networks, data maps and data points. An added benefit for you is that we also use the lab to train and develop better techniques, benefiting your substation projects before they are even constructed.

Fast Field SolutionsBuilding reliability into substations is a critical requirement for power distribution. With the test lab, our engineers build a deeper level of knowledge about substation operations, as well as the most efficient ways to integrate them into the grid. With our processes, we go beyond basic substation specifications to deliver the full picture of how your protective SCADA system functions best.

Staying Up-to-DatePower generation, transmission and distribution are becoming more complex as technology changes. With smart grids, new generation sources, competing protocols and communication shifts, it is critical to have staff training available to ensure your energy systems operate reliably and efficiently.

OverviewOne of the critical success factors of our Project Management Process is clear and concise communications from the start of the project. To ensure this, Ulteig has assigned a project sponsor to work closely with project manager. The proj-ect sponsor will be the primary Ulteig senior leadership representative assigned to the project. The project sponsor and PMO Director will be available throughout the project to assist the project manager with any major issues that may arise.

Project Management ProcessThe Ulteig Project Management Process utilizes the principles found in the Project Management Institutes Project Manage-ment Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). Ulteig has integrated client feedback with these proven Project Management principles to develop a comprehensive Project Management Process. Ulteig project managers are keenly aware of the triple con-straint project knowledge areas of scope, schedule and cost. Additionally, our project managers thoroughly understand the importance of project quality, resource management, communications and risk, and have the ability to respond quickly to changing project needs within these areas.

The Ulteig project team is comprised of a dedicat-ed project technical lead who facilitates the work performed by the engineers of the specific project disciplines. The project manager and the project technical lead work very closely in a collaborative fashion throughout the project life cycle.

The project team initiates its rigorous Planning Phase during the proposal development period by formulating an initial baseline schedule and scope definition based on RFP scope documents.

project management

“”

The main goal of the Ulteig-provided Project Management Services is to provide leadership with a notable, continuous improvement in project efficiency. Additional benefits are to provide a greater level of visibility by tracking and reporting on project goals and objectives with up-to-date information. --Jason Hoskins, COO, Ulteig, St. Paul, MN

The project manager is responsible for success-fully executing the project objectives, including but not limited to the project scope, schedule and cost. The project manager reports to the PMO Director and has a dotted line reporting relation-ship with the project sponsor. The project manager is responsible to the client as well as the project team.

Upon award, the project manager leads the team in developing a detailed project plan that contains all of the critical project elements including: scope definition, cost plans, schedule, risks and mitigation strategy and communications plan. The project team will meet and review with the client all critical project information to ensure alignment. This is a very important step in our process and we are very diligent in our efforts. The Ulteig project team will ensure that it will look to understand and integrate when possible any project specific client feedback into each project.

During project execution, the project manager will work closely with the project team to ensure successful scope, schedule and cost criteria are met. Proper communication, project statusing and reporting are all focal points of the Ulteig project team. Ulteig is responsive to client feedback on the entire Project Management Process and welcomes the opportunity to discuss process improvement.

Page 11: Ulteig Services for Utilities

High-definition (HD) scanning is a technology that incorporates the use of laser ranging to safely acquire accurate data that can be processed to create scaled, digital 3D model of the scanned object or environment. Using the HD scanning system allows Ulteig professionals to capture the survey information without interfering with ongoing facility operations, traffic, or construction activities.

HD scanning can be conducted indoors or outdoors and under any lighting conditions. The raw scan data can be used with software to view, pan, zoom, rotate in 3D, and obtain point-to-point measurements. Additional postprocessing can translate the data into accurate AutoCAD® drawings for design purposes or can be used for 3D visual flights. Whether data stands alone, is processed into a 3D model, or is linked with a GIS database, the uses for high-definition scanning data are varied and distinct.

The Leica ScanStation-One 3D rotating laser scanner, also known as the HD scanner, is similar to a total station, except that it captures a 3D image of the environment around it. It collects 9,000 points per minute and stores the points on a laptop, creating real-time data for the surveyors to model using their software.

The scanner records and stores precise full-scale representations of all visible elements within the desired scan area. It also captures a 3D photographic record of the items scanned. The tool scans in such high detail that even road joints, sidewalk cracks, building veneers, and license plates are visible.
