MD towers are galvanized steel, actory assembled,

counterlow cooling towers, designed to serve airconditioning and rerigeration systems as well as lightto medium industrial process loads on clean water. TheMarley MD evolved rom a actory-assembled concepto towers pioneered by Marley some 75 years ago, andincorporate all o the design advancements that ourcustomers have ound valuable. MD towers represent thecurrent state o the art in this cooling tower category.

The speciications portion o this publication not onlyrelates the language to use in describing an appropriateMD cooling towerbut also denes why certain items andeatures are important enough to speciy with the intention

o insisting upon compliance by all bidders. The let handcolumn o pages 36 thru 49 provides appropriate text orthe various specication paragraphs, whereas the righthand column comments on the meaning o the subjectmatter and explains its value.

Pages 36 through 40 indicate those paragraphs which will

result in the purchase o a basic cooling towerone thataccomplishes the specied thermal perormance, but whichwill lack many operationand maintenance-enhancingaccessories and eatures that are usually desired by thosepersons who are responsible or the continuing operationo the system o which the cooling tower is part. It will alsoincorporate those standard materials which testing andexperience has proven to provide acceptable longevity innormal operating conditions.

Pages 41 through 49 provide paragraphs intended toadd those eatures, components, and materials thatwill customize the cooling tower to meet the users

    requirements.

MD Steel Cooling Tower Operational and Environmental Awareness 5

C A U T I O NThe cooling tower must be located at such distance

and direction to avoid the possibility o contaminated

discharge air being drawn into building resh air

intake ducts. The purchaser should obtain the

services o a Licensed Proessional Engineer or

Registered Architect to certiy that the location o

the cooling tower is in compliance with applicable air

pollution, ire and clean air codes.

    SYSTEM CLEANLINESS

Cooling towers are very eective air washers. Atmospheric dustable to pass through the relatively small louver openings will enterthe circulating water system. Increased concentrations can intensiysystem maintenance by clogging screens and strainersand smallerparticulates can coat system heat transer suraces. In areas o lowlow velocitysuch as the cold water basinsedimentary depositscan provide a breeding ground or bacteria.

In areas prone to dust and sedimentation, you should considerinstalling some means or keeping the cold water basin clean. Typicaldevices include side stream ilters and a variety o iltration media.

    WATER TREATMENT

To control the buildup o dissolved solids resulting rom waterevaporation, as well as airborne impurities and biological contaminantsincluding Legionella, an eective consistent water treatment programis required. Simple blowdown may be adequate to control corrosionand scale, but biological contamination can only be controlled withbiocides.

An acceptable water treatment program must be compatible withthe variety o materials incorporated in a cooling towerideally thepH o the circulating water should all between 6.5 and 9.0. Batcheeding o chemicals directly into the cooling tower is not a goodpractice since localized damage to the tower is possible. Speciicstartup instructions and additional water quality recommendationscan be ound in the MD User Manual which accompanies the towerand also is available rom your local Marley sales representative. Forcomplete water treatment recommendations, consult a competent, qualiied water treatment supplier.

    TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

The MD tower is an excellent choice or normal applicationsrequiring cold water or the dissipation o heat. This includescondenser water cooling or air conditioning, rerigeration, andthermal storage systems, as well as their utilization or ree-coolingin all o those systems. The MD can also be used in the coolingo jacket water or engines and air compressors, and are widelyapplied to dissipate waste heat in a variety o industrial, power andmanuacturing processes.

Choosing the all stainless steel construction option, the MDcan be conidently applied in unusually corrosive processes andoperating environments. However, no single product line can answerall problems, and selective judgement should be exercised in theollowing situations

    APPLICATIONS REqUIRING ALTERNATIVE COOLINGTOWER SELECTIONS

Certain types o applications are incompatible with anycooling tower with ilm illwhether MD or a competitive tower osimilar manuacture. Film ill is subject to distortion in high watertemperatures, and the narrow passages are easily clogged by turbidor debris-laden water. Some o the applications, which call oralternative tower designs are:

Water temperatures exceeding 52Cadversely aects theservice lie and perormance o normal counterlow PVC ill.Higher temperature ill materials are available.

Ethylene glycol contentcan plug ill passages as slime andalgae accumulate to eed on the available organic materials.

Fatty acid contentound in processes such as soap anddetergent manuacturing and some ood processingatty acidspose a serious threat or plugging ill passages.

Particulate carry overoten ound in steel mills and cementplantscan both cause ill plugging, and can build up topotentially damaging levels on tower structure.

Pulp carry overtypical o the paper industry and oodprocessing where vacuum pumps or barometric condensers areused. Causes ill plugging which may be intensiied by algae.

    ALTERNATIVE SELECTIONS

In addition to the MD, SPX Cooling Technologies oers a ullscope o products in various designs and capacities to meet thespecial demands o speciic applications.

MD Steel Cooling Tower Engineering Data: Freeze Prevention 34

When the ambient air temperature alls below 0C, thewater in a cooling tower can reeze. Marley Technical Report#H-003Operating Cooling Towers in Freezing Weatherdescribes how to prevent reezing during operation. Availableat spxcooling.com or ask your Marley sales representative ora copy.

During shutdown, water collects in the cold water basinand may reeze solid. You can prevent reezing by adding heatto the water let in the toweror, you can drain the tower andall exposed pipework at shutdown.

ELECTRIC BASIN HEATERSAn automatic basin water heater system is available

    consisting o the ollowing components:

Standard weatherproo (IP55) enclosure, rating dependingon model and minimum expected winter temperature.

Ratings are in kW or speciied ambient temperature. Forlower ambient temperatures reer to SPX engineering oradvice.

Standard electircal supply is 380/415 V 3ph (220/240V 1ph available as extra cost option).

Heater has an integral thermostat, set point nominally 3Cbut adjustable to suit operating requirements.

Heater components are normally shipped separately or

    installation by others.

Note: any exposed piping that is still illed with waterat shutdownincluding the makeup water lineshould beelectrically traced and insulated (by others).

    INDOOR STORAGE TANK

With this type o system, water lows rom an indoor tank, through the load system, and back to the tower, where it iscooled. The cooled water lows by gravity rom the tower tothe tank located in a heated space. At shutdown, all exposedwater drains into the tank, where it is sae rom reezing.

The amount o water needed to successully operatethe system depends on the tower size and lowrate and onthe volume o water contained in the piping system to androm the tower. You must select a tank large enough tocontain those combined volumesplus a level suicient to

maintain a looded suction on your pump. Control makeupwater according to the level where the tank stabilizes duringoperation.

MD Steel Cooling Tower Engineering Data: Water Quality 35

The MD cooling tower can be a very eective air washer.Atmospheric dust able to pass through the relatively smalllouver openings will enter the recirculating water system.Increased concentrations can intensiy systems maintenanceby clogging screens and strainersand smaller particulatescan coat system heat transer suraces. In areas o low lowvelocitysuch as the collection basinsedimentary depositscan provide a breeding ground or bacteria.

In areas prone to dust and sedimentation, you shouldconsider installing some means or keeping the collectionbasin clean. Typical devices include side stream ilters and a

    variety o iltration media.

    BLOWDOWN

Blowdown or Bleedo is the continuous removal o asmall portion o the water rom the open recirculating system.Blowdown is used to prevent the dissolved solids romconcentrating to the point where they will orm scale. Theamount o blowdown required depends on the cooling rangethe dierence between the hot and cold water temperatureso the closed circuit and the composition o the makeupwater.

    WATER TREATMENT

To control the buildup o dissolved solids resulting romwater evaporation, as well as airborne impurities and biologicalcontaminants including Legionella, an eective consistentwater treatment program is required. Simple blowdown maybe adequate to control corrosion and scale, but biologicalcontamination can only be controlled with biocides.

An acceptable water treatment program must becompatible with the variety o materials incorporated in acooling towerideally the pH o the recirculating watershould all between 6.5 and 9.0. Batch eeding o the

chemicals directly into the cooling tower is not a good practicesince localized damage to the cooling tower is possible.Speciic startup instructions and additional water qualityrecommendations can be ound in the MD Cooling TowerUser Manualwhich accompanies the cooling tower and alsois available at spxcooling.com.

    C A U T I O N

The cooling tower must be located at such distance

and direction to avoid the possibility o contaminated

discharge air being drawn into building resh air

intake ducts. The purchaser should obtain the

services o a Licensed Proessional Engineer or

Registered Architect to certiy that the location o

the cooling tower is in compliance with applicable air

pollution, ire and clean air codes.

    2.2 The tower shall be capable o mini-mum _____ m3/hr per kW eiciencyat 35C-29.5C-23.8C, per ASHRAEStandard 90.1.

    3.0 Performance Warranty:

3.1 CTI Certiication notwithstanding, thecooling tower manuacturer shall guar-antee that the cooling tower suppliedwill meet the speciied perormanceconditions when the tower is installed asshown on the plans. I, because o a sus-pected thermal perormance deiciency,

the owner chooses to conduct an on-site thermal perormance test under thesupervision o a qualiied, disinterestedthird party in accordance with CTI orASME standards during the irst year ooperation; and i the tower ails to perormwithin the limits o test tolerance; then thecooling tower manuacturer will pay orthe cost o the test and will make suchcorrections as are appropriate and agree-able to the owner to compensate or theperormance deiciency.

Your specification base establishes the type, configuration, base material, andphysical limitations of the cooling tower to be quoted. During the planning andlayout stages of your project, you will have focused your attention on a cool-ing tower selection that fits your space allotment, and whose power usageis acceptable. Limitations on physical size and total operating horsepoweravoid the introduction of unforeseen operational and site-related influences.Specifying the number of cells, and the maximum fan hp/cell will work to youradvantage. You are specifying a counterflow tower, which is a type notedand often speci-fiedfor its economical use of plan area. It effectively replaces most makes ofolder towersboth forced-draft and induced-draftusually without major rede-sign of the existing site.

CTI Certification means that the cooling tower has been tested under operat-

ing conditions and found to perform as rated by the manufacturer under thosecircumstances. It assures the buyer that thetower is not intentionally or inadvertentlyundersized by the manufacturer. A list of CTIcertified cooling towers can be found at cti.org.

The minimum efficiency per ASHRAEStandard 90.1 for induced draft open cool-ing towers applied to comfort cooling is8.68 m3/hr/kW @ 35/29.5/23.8. There are no efficiency requirements for non-comfort cooling applications. If you want greater efficiency you can require it byspecifying a higher ASHRAE Standard 90.1 8.68 m3/hr/kW.

Each model's ASHRAE Standard 90.1 rating can be viewed in ouronline sizing and selection software at spxcooling.com/update.

CTI certification alone is not sufficient to assure you that the cooling towerwill perform satisfactorily in your situation. Certification is established underrelatively controlled conditions, and cooling towers seldom operate under suchideal circumstances. They are affected by nearby structures, machinery, enclo-sures, effluent from other sources, etc. Responsible and knowledgeable bidderswill take such site-specific effects into consideration in selecting the coolingtowerbut the specifier must insist by the written specification that the design-

er/manufacturer guarantee this real world performance. Any reluctance on thepart of the bidder should cause you some concern.

Maintenance platorms and guard-rails, where speciied shall be capableo withstanding a 890N concentratedlive load in any direction and shall bedesigned in accordance with OSHAguidelines.

    5.0 Construction:

5.1 Except where otherwise speciied, allcomponents o the cooling tower shall beabricated o heavy-gauge steel, protectedagainst corrosion by EN10142:2000grade G600 galvanizing. Ater passivationo the galvanized steel (8 weeks at pH7-8, and calcium hardness and alkalin-ity at 100-300 mg/L each), the coolingtower shall be capable o withstandingwater having a pH o 6.5 to 9.0; a chloridecontent up to 500 mg/L as NaCl (300mg/L as Cl-); a sulate content (as SO4)up to 250 mg/L; a calcium content (asCaCO3) up to 500 mg/L; silica (as SiO2)up to 150 mg/L; and design hot watertemperatures up to 55C. The circulating

water shall contain no oil, grease, attyacids, or organic solvents.Fiberglass casing, polyurethane barriers, and thermosetting hybrids and the com-ponents they are adhered to shall be con-sidered non-recyclable and not allowed.

5.2 The speciications, as written, are intend-ed to indicate those materials that willbe capable o withstanding the abovewater quality in continuing service, aswell as the loads described in paragraph4.1. They are to be regarded as minimumrequirements. Where component materialsunique to individual tower designs are not

speciied, the manuacturers shall takethe above water quality and load carryingcapabilities into account in the selectiono their materials o manuacture.

It is important to understand the distinction betweenstructure and anchor-age. Specifying that only the anchorage meet these requirements means thetower can become non-functional, even fall down, yet remain attached to thefoundation. Specifyingstructure will require the tower to remain operational. The indicated design values are the minimums allowed under accepted designstandards. They give you assurance that the tower can be shipped, handled, hoistedand ultimately operated in a normal cooling tower environment. MostMD models will withstand significantly higher wind and seismic loads. If yourgeographic location dictates higher wind load or seismic load values, pleasemake the appropriate changes, after discussion with your Marley sales repre-sentative.

Some countries and states, like Florida, require structure andanchorage to meet a given loading. Check with your local officials.

In the history of cooling towers, no other coating for carbon steel has exhibitedthe success and longevity of galvanization in exposure to the normal coolingtower water quality defined at left. No paints or electrostatically-applied coat-ings, however exotic they may be, can approach galvanization's history of suc-cess.

If extended longevity of the cooling tower is requiredor unusually harsh oper-ating conditions are expectedconsider specifying stainless steel as either thebase construction material, or the material utilized for specific components ofyour choice. See Stainless Steel Options on page 41.

The Marley Power Belt drive system features all-aluminum sheaves, power bandbelts and long-life bearings for dependable service.

TEFC motors offer additional benefits over TEAO motors whose only sourceof cooling is the flow of air produced by the cooling tower fan. This air rate isnot always ideal due to motor position, blockage, variable speed operation, etc.TEFC ensures the motor will always be cooled properly.

Unless otherwise specified, motor speed will be 1800 RPM in 60 Hertz areasand 1500 RPM in 50 Hertz areas on standard models. Low sound models willuse motor speeds appropriate for the specific model.

The value of a 5 year mechanical equipment warranty speaks for itself. Exceptfor the motor, virtually all of the mechanical equipment on a Marley tower isdesigned and manufactured by SPX Cooling Technologies. Cooling tower ven-dors who purchase commercial fans, driveshafts, etc. may require that you dealdirectly with those commercial suppliers for warranty satisfaction.

    Stainless Steel Collection Basin:

11.1 Replace paragraph 11.1 with the follow-ing:The collection basin shall be welded301L stainless steel construction. Onlylow-carbon stainless steel alloys will beaccepted in order to minimize the risk ointergranular corrosion in the weld zones. The basin shall include the number andtype o suction connections required toaccommodate the out-low piping systemshown on the plans. Basin suction con-nections shall be equipped with debrisscreens. A actory installed, loat oper-ated, mechanical make-up valve shall beincluded. An overlow and drain connec-tion shall be provided in each cell o thetower. The basin loor shall slope towardthe drain to allow complete lush out odebris and silt which may accumulate.

    All Stainless Cooling Tower:

5.1 Replace paragraph 5.1 with the follow-ing:Except where otherwise speciied, allcomponents o the cooling tower shall beabricated o heavy-gauge, series 301Lstainless steel. Only low-carbon stainlesssteel alloys will be accepted in order tominimize the risk o intergranular corro-sion in the weld zones. The tower shall becapable o withstanding water having achloride content (NaCl) up to 750 mg/L;a sulate content (SO4) up to 1200mg/L; a calcium content (CaCO3) up to800 mg/L; silica (SiO2) up to 150 mg/L;and design hot water temperatures up to

57C. The circulating water shall containno oil, grease, atty acids, or organic sol-vents.

The cold water basin is the only part of the tower that is subject to periods ofstagnant water, concentrated with treatment chemicals and customary contami-nants. It is also the most expensive and difficult part of any tower to repair orreplace. For these reasons, many customersparticularly those who are replac-ing older towerschoose to specify stainless steel cold water basins.

The 316 alloy was designed to increase resistance to chlorides. Generally, cooling towers in HVAC service utilize water sources, which do not approach

the limits of 300 series stainless, even up to several cycles of concentration.Industrial cooling towers, generally circulating more aggressive water, use 300series stainless as standard metallurgy, upgrading to 316 for situations suchas estuary water or other significant source of chlorides. The vast majority ofcooling tower water sources result in an acceptable environment for 300 seriesstainless steel, with HVAC systems typically being on the mild end of the spec-trum. If you have one of the rare instances where water quality exceeds900 mg/l Cl, talk to you Marley sales representative about 316SS.

Where water quality falls outside the limits indicated in Paragraph 5.1, anall-stainless tower is worthy of your consideration. For pure resistance to cor-rosioncoupled with the capability to meet stringent fire and building codesthere is no substitute for stainless steel. No paints or electostatically-appliedcoatings, however exotic they may be, can match stainless steel's ability to with-stand adverse operating conditions.

Periodic inspection and maintenance of a cooling tower distribution system isfundamental to preserving maximum cooling system efficiency. All cooling tow-erscrossflow or counterfloware subject to clogging to varying degrees bywaterborne contaminants such as pipe scale and sediment. Therefore, safe andeasy access to these components is of significant value to the operator.

Access can be provided in a number of ways, including portable ladders orscaffolding, but for maximum safety and convenience, a field installed Marleyaccess platform with guardrails is available to make this task as safe and user-friendly as possible. Further, its location on the side of the tower does not addto the height of the unit, preserving architectural integrity. It also saves theowner time and money, in that maintenance personnel may devote their time toinspection rather than searching for ladders or erection of portable scaffolding.

Many cooling towers are installed such that the base of the unit is 2'-0" or moreabove the roof or grade level. This makes it difficult to get up to the foot of theattached ladder. The ladder extension alleviates this problem. Marley ladderextensions are available in standard 5'-0" and 11'-0" lengths.

Sound produced by a standard MD tower operating in an unobstructed environ-ment will meet all but the most restrictive noise limitationsand will react favor-ably to natural attenuation. Where the tower has been sized to operate within anenclosure, the enclosure itself will have a damping effect on sound. Sound alsodeclines with distanceby about 5 or 6 dB(A) each time the distance doubles.Where noise at a critical point is likely to exceed an acceptable limit, you haveseveral optionslisted below in ascending order of cost impact:

In many cases, noise concerns are limited to night time, when ambient noiselevels are lower and neighbors are trying to sleep. You can usually resolvethese situations by using variable speed drives, and operating the fans atreduced speed after hours. The natural night time reduction in wet-bulbtemperature makes this a very feasible solution in most areas of the world.Variable speed drives automatically minimize the tower's noise level duringperiods of reduced load and/or reduced ambient without sacrificing the sys-tem's ability to maintain a constant cold water temperature. This is a relativelyinexpensive solution, and can pay for itself qu
