Quarter 2 Update 27 June 2013
Flexible Plug & Play
• 1st Project (7.2MW – 33kV) accepted their FPP connection offer (CiC).
• This project will rely on both use of Active Network Management and Dynamic Line
Rating technologies, making it the first connection of its kind for UK Power
Networks (and to a certain extent the UK) and is planned for energisation in summer
2014. This is the first of the acceptances, we are in final talks and we hope to sign
up two other projects (additional 11.5MW of wind capacity) by the end of August
2013.
• The use of smart grid technologies and the introduction of an “interruptible” export
connection will deliver substantial savings on sole use assets when compared with
the traditional Business-as-Usual connection offer for this specific customer and allow
them to connect to a constrained part of our network.

The Future????
1. What is it going to look like in six months from now, twelve months from now?
– If 1 ROC per MW is introduced. What about no ROCs support at all.
– Impacts on the industry of the “anti-dumping” duty at 11% potentially rising to 45%
2. Are we going to see a “gold rush” prior to the next proposed changes in tariffs?
3. What is current break even cost per MW for each developer (do they all use the same
figure)?
4. Would you consider paying network pre-conditioning works to avoid outage
constraints ahead of planning permission?
5. What use have you made of the heat-map?
6. Best practice/format for surgeries?
7. What does best practice look like?

Combined Quote (1)
•Highlights the customer’s option to use the services of an ICP to carry out any
contestable works
•Provides two separate quotes in a single document:
– a “bundled” quote; where UKPN (or its contractors) do all of the work for
the customer
– a “DNO Works” quote; where the customer will appoint an ICP to carry
out any contestable works and UKPN carry out the non-contestable
works only (paid for by the ICP)
•Therefore:
– If the customer opts to use an ICP they will already have the DNO
Works quote that can be accepted by their appointed ICP, potentially
cutting down the overall time for the work to be completed for the end
customer
– Competition is genuinely promoted

Combined Quote (2)
• A trial was set up in Sussex in November 2012 and is due to be started in
selected areas of EPN and LPN later this year
• We are taking “lessons learned” from the Sussex trial and are now
developing the process and quote letter further, ready for widespread roll-
out

Current Issues / Challenges
• GIS data for EPN is raster based. A project to convert to
a vector format is in progress, but not yet complete
• Data exists in Ellipse for poles, but is difficult to trace out
circuits
• The business requires circuit based mapping for several
purposes including data provision to third parties
• Not all assets are mapped into ENMAC/PowerOn
• Data in ENMAC/PowerOn is manually entered

How do we get to where we should be?
• Cleanse data within ENMAC/PowerOn so that it has as
few errors as possible
• Create a process for retrieving sequential circuit data
from the system
• Convert that data to a mapping format
• Work out how to host the data to both internal and
external customers
2011. UK Power Networks. All rights reserved 53
Progress to date
• Program written to trace out circuits from
ENMAC/PowerOn
• Opted for Google Earth as initial format to publish results
• PL/SQL package created to take trace data and convert
it to KML (Keyhole Markup Language) for use in Google
Earth.
• Test run of all 11kV circuits in Ipswich complete and
mapped.
2011. UK Power Networks. All rights reserved 56
Initial Results - EPN Primary & Grid Sites
• Map works how you would expect Google Maps to
function
• Primary & Grid Site markers are interactive
• Info window can be populated with additional information
retrieved from various sources
• Converted easting and northing reference is accurate to
4 metres, although underlying data may require further
validation and cleansing
2011. UK Power Networks. All rights reserved 59
Initial Results – Ipswich 11kV Circuits
• Circuit paths traced out
• Point to point data, not actual cable path. Any point on
the circuit which has geographic coordinates is used as
a waypoint for the vector
• White markers indicate secondary substations and again
are interactive
• Info window is currently populated with site name and
rating, but any data can be populated here. Links to HV
and LV diagrams etc.
2011. UK Power Networks. All rights reserved 61
Initial Results – Street View
• Normal functionality of Google Earth is available to all
maps
• Paths appear in street view
• Markers can potentially be added to street view also
2011. UK Power Networks. All rights reserved 63
Future Enhancements
• Displaying circuit load information and additional
capacity
• Look into pole/tower data from Ellipse and the potential
of mapping this also
• Different line style, line height for OH and UG lines
• Port existing maps to Google Maps JS API for web
access enabling multi platform compatibility
• Improve user interface
2011. UK Power Networks. All rights reserved 64
Current Concerns/Issues
• Google Earth KML option free to use, but terms and
conditions allow Google visibility to our data
• Google Maps JS API requires a license to use
Communications with Google have started and are on-
going
• Security: We are working with a number of stakeholders,
including CPNI, to ensure any concerns regarding
placing this detailed geospatial substation data in the
public domain are properly considered and managed.

DG Customer Experience
• All DNOs quote the last day as their target which is not in the spirit of the GSOPs and all DNO’s manage the start/stop clock to the last GSOP day
• Some DNOs attempt to downgrade our formal complaint to just an enquiry to avoid reporting complaints
• Many DNOs have different offices within their own region and have different approaches to policy, processing of applications and even charging methodologies for S15 / S16 requests
• Little progress is being made in providing information to generation customers on connection capacities at all voltages
• Many DNOs do to formally acknowledge receipt of applications for connection, informing the applicant of the job reference number and the person responsible for handling their application
• There are different approaches to charging for generation outlines compared to that of normal outlines for load connections
• The new guarantees obligated DNOs to provide much more of a detailed breakdown of their charging structure for the connection work, in reality we are as yet to see this detail provided by the DNOs
71
Inside Looking Out • What did we think the customer wanted and how did we deliver against expectations?
• Set aspiration target to exceed timescales and become the best
• Use customer feedback to provide insight into customer requirements
• Team help design new SAP WMS and processes to improve performance
• Circulated customer feedback regularly through team brief to teams and used score to determine impact of remedial actions and provide proof of improvement and also shared across individual team to create competitive environment and shared learning
• Target team leaders and individuals through yearly review (achieving my potential)against improvement areas
• Circulate daily workload - inform teams of workload, set aspiration/target for the day - drive performance through team leaders
• Set up daily rosta for customer queries and enquiries across teams to provide point of contact
• Call / send customer e-mail when job is allocated and set up for processing with contact details
• Web site improvements testing with critical customer friends
• Monthly NPS surveys of end to end experience driving improvements in customer service
72
Outside Looking In
• No up-front communication route to discuss tentative projects - must fill in application form before anyone will speak with you, budget or formal offer and even then not guaranteed.
• Where numbers are supplied DNO rarely call back if message is left
• Goes into "black hole" no information as to who is dealing with a job or where a job is in the process or time to complete
• All DNOs run blocked number calls so it's not easy to call back if a call is missed since few leave a message for return calls
• All jobs we have experience with so far run almost to the end of if not the last day of GSOP quote time
• Information provided at budget stage is sketchy (that's generous) and few DNOs provide a summary of assumptions made in generating the price and NO plan! Budgets have to be better since a customer needs the information for the basis of investment viability on generation projects and can't submit a formal application unless POC voltage is known
• Generally if and when you get through to the "man who can" they can be quite helpful but are often not interested after the quotation has been produced

Smart Solutions – All flexibility has a role to play
More flexibility on the system is needed to avoid the need for significant traditional network reinforcement, which would otherwise mean higher energy costs for customers.
