ANNUAL REPORT2007–2008

THE AUGUSTA CURTIS CULTURAL CENTER, INC. (ACCC) was founded to develop cultural programs and

awareness for the residents of Meriden and surrounding towns. In doing so it preserves the historical Curtis Me-morial Building, and offers increased opportunities for a variety of organizations and individuals to meet, learn, and engage in both the historical and current resources the area has to offer.

The ACCC is a newer organization with a long history. It works out of the century old, marble Greek Revival Cur-tis Memorial building located in the center of Meriden across from City Hall. The building has a special place in the history of Meriden’s cultural development. The build-ing not only housed the city’s first Public Library, but it is also an example of local philanthropy. Though its use as a library stopped over 25 years ago, the building has always served as a reminder of community cul-ture and services as it housed the Rosa Ponselle Society and Meriden Hall of Fame. When the building was in need of renovation, the citizens of Meriden again rose to the occasion and worked with the City to raise awareness and to guide the project to fruition.

The ACCC was formed in September 2000 and is dedicated to fostering art, science, history, ethnic celebration, and sport in the City of Meriden and its environs. The ACCC is a 501c3 non-profit organization. All rental monies are used to fund programming and events.

The new Rosa Ponselle Memorial Garden was constructed in Rosa Ponselle Park and the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on Thursday, May 29th, 2008. The garden was constructed with a $100,000 grant received from the State of CT. The garden was named in memory of Rosa Ponselle, a Meriden native, who was a famous “Opera Diva”. The garden was constructed primarily as a performance area for the Center, but will be host to many weddings and special events. The ACCC will be hosting many performers in the years to come on the new performance stage for all of Meriden and its surrounding communities to enjoy. If you are interested in sponsoring such an event please contact the Center. The Garden & the Center are available for private parties and special events.
