Arise and Shine Uganda (AASU) is a community based organization (registration number 904) that has been in operation since 2010. The organization’s head office is based in Jinja with its interventions focused in Jinja and Kamuli Districts; within the Eastern region of Uganda.

The target beneficiaries of AASU’s interventions are orphans and other vulnerable children (OVCs), community youth under 18 years and community

adults above 18 years.

AASU is currently running four (4) different projects including; The Arise and shine Children’s Care Home in Jinja, Nursery and Primary school, Community education and Community Outreach in Kibuye village in Kamuli district.

To reach the goals Arise and Shine Uganda has a few different projects:

Children’s Carehome in Jinja Primary School in Kibuye Village Community Education in Kibuye Village Community Outreach Children with a disability Income generating projects in Jinja

Community Education in Kibuye Village In the community education project, we basically teach community members about issues affecting the village and we also run a literacy programme for the adults who missed out on the chance of education. AASU focuses on education as a tool for community development and aims to assist communities in bettering themselves through providing access to quality education in different forms.

We teach about issues like personal hygiene, HIV/AIDS sensitisation, Nutrition among others. We have so far carried out a number of community education sessions in Kibuye village and all these sessions turned out to be very successful. For this reason we are hoping to spread all over Kamuli district with our community education project.

Borehole project Kibuye Village

Some of the most successful community education session was about personal hygiene focusing on dental hygiene and the dangers of unsafe drinking water around the village. Shortly after these sessions, AASU was able to fundraise and successfully drilled a bore hole for the community and the village at large. Before the project began, Kibuye was dependent upon one borehole for safe drinking water. Due to long lines when collecting water many have been choosing to fetch water from the river, which has caused illness through water born diseases. But with the Arise and shine water project, this problem was minimised in the community.

The adult literacy project

AASU is finally able to provide adult education opportunities for men and women who have either never attended or never completed school. By providing basic literacy and maths classes, along with vocational training and language classes AASU hopes to be to be able to assist Kibuye to develop as a community and to be able to interact and trade with other communities across the country. Those within Kibuye have shown great interest in adult education already and we have registered a turn up of at least 60 community members at every session.
