ABOUT UFM NONCREDIT CLASSES

UFM adheres to the philosophy that everyone can learn and everyone can teach. UFM is a community learning program which contracts with nonprofessional community instructors. Consequently, we cannot guarantee that the courses offered are accurate or complete in content and quality of instruction. We rely on the credentials provided by instructors, class observation, and participant feedback as tools for evaluating a class and an instructor’s ability.

UFM classes are not a forum for selling a product or service from which the instructor might benefit. Materials specifically oriented to an instructor’s financial interests are not to be distributed in class. Participants who wish to pursue a relationship with an instructor outside class time do so on their own responsibility. Please share any concerns you may have about class material or an instructor by calling Kayla at (785) 539-8763.

UFM CANCELLATION POLICYWhen we cancel or reschedule a class, you will be notified. Therefore, it is extremely important that we have a daytime and evening phone number and/or email address where we may reach you or leave a message. We reserve the right to cancel any class.

REFUND POLICYWe will provide a full refund if a class is canceled by UFM. If a student withdraws from a class 48 hours or more before the class begins, a full refund may be given, except for any published non-refundable fees. No refunds will be given once a class has started.

DISCLAIMERUFM Community Learning Center serves as a forum to bring together people who want to share their personal ideas and/or learn skills in a variety of areas. UFM, its staff, and its board of directors do not endorse any particular viewpoint or philosophy presented in classes, activities, or events included in any UFM publication.

NONDISCRIMINATION POLICYUFM Community Learning Center is committed to nondiscrimination on the basis of race, gender, national origin, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, political beliefs, or other non-merit reasons, in admissions, educational programs, or activities and employment (including employment of disabled veterans and veterans of the Vietnam Era) as required by applicable laws and regulations. Students under age 18 need the permission of a parent or guardian to participate in a class. Some individual classes may have age restrictions or may require instructor permission. Please call (785) 539-8763 to make arrangements for classroom accessibility.

DONATIONSDonations help underwrite the costs of maintaining the UFM building, coordinating the catalog of classes, and special projects such as scholarships, youth projects, or gardening. Tax deductible contributions may be sent to UFM at 1221 Thurston St., Manhattan, KS, 66502.

SPECIAL ASSISTANCEA participant with a disability who needs accommodations in a UFM program should call (785) 539-8763 to make arrangements for classroom accessibility.

Limited scholarships are available for adults and children who qualify for established income guidelines.

KSU CREDIT COURSES

CREDIT CLASS ENROLLMENT K-State students enroll through KSIS. For credit enrollment questions, contact Samantha or Charlene at UFM at (785) 539-8763.

CREDIT ENROLLMENT FEESCourses taken for credit carry additional fees required for University administration of the credit program. A one-time $65.00 late fee will be charged for enrollments beginning on the first day of classes if this is your first enrollment at K-State for the semester. Additional campus privilege fees may be assessed for students enrolled in 6 or fewer K-State credit hours. There is a non-refundable material fee for withdrawing from some classes after the first day. Class fees listed are for full-time resident students.

CREDIT CLASS REFUNDS AND WITHDRAWALSTuition refunds are calculated based on the number of calendar days in the class. You may be eligible for a full or partial refund of tuition if you choose to drop your class before a certain date. Please refer to the full withdrawal and refund policy at https://global.k-state.edu/students/policies/withdrawal/ or visit http://courses.k-state.edu/summer2019/information/deadlines.html

DROP POLICYAll drop deadlines are calculated based on the number of calendar days in the class. The following policies apply: a student may drop a class prior to 33% of the class duration without a grade being recorded on the student’s transcript; if a student drops after 33% but before 62% of the class duration, a grade of W will be issued. No drops will be accepted after 62% of the course duration. Failure to drop a class may result in a failing grade. For more information visit http://courses.k-state.edu/summer2019/information/deadlines.html

STUDENT ACCESS CENTERA student with a disability who wishes to request accommodations for a credit course should notify the course instructor or contact the Student Access Center office: http://www.k-state.edu/accesscenter/, (785) 532-6441, or [email protected]. Early notification is requested to ensure that accommodations can be provided in a timely manner.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICYUFM courses held on campus follow the inclement weather policy of Kansas State University. Courses will be conducted unless all University courses are cancelled. If the instructor informs his or her students personally that he or she will not be present at a given class meeting, the instructor is then responsible for arranging a make-up lesson.

CREDIT AND NONCREDIT LIABILITY STATEMENTIndividual participants should be aware of the risks and hazards involved in recreational sports and fitness activities. They should voluntarily elect to utilize KSU and UFM facilities and participate in programs recognizing present conditions and further agree to voluntarily assume all risks of loss, damage or injury that may be sustained while using KSU or UFM facilities or participating in programs. K-State Global Campus/UFM assumes no responsibility for costs involved with individual injury or property loss incurred in connection with the use of University or UFM facilities. Individuals are reminded that they should review their own personal circumstances to determine if they have adequate insurance or protection in case of injury resulting from the use of UFM or University facilities or participation in programs. It is recommended that all participants have a complete physical before engaging in any physical recreation program.

LEARN TO SWIM CLASSESUFM proudly offers the American Red Cross Swim Lessons Levels I-VI, Parent and Child, and Preschool I & II. UFM also offers private lessons.

Water safety is reinforced with tips and practice each class. On the first day of class, students are evaluated to assure that they are in the proper level. Students advance through the levels at their own rate and are moved to different class levels as space permits and skill advancement demands.

LOCATION: KSU Natatorium - Ahearn Complex on Denison Avenue

Lockers are available for use during class. Participants must supply towels and swimsuits. Changing tables are available in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms.

SUMMER PARKING:Please take note of all parking signs around the Natatorium. UFM is not responsible for parking tickets. For morning classes, we recommend parking on side streets after 9 AM. Parking in the KSU West lot off Denison Avenue lot requires a permit during the day, between 8 AM and 5 PM. Daily, weekly, and monthly parking passes are available for purchase from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM at K-State Parking Services. Prices are $5/day, $20/week or $40/month. Parking Services is located in the southwest corner of the KSU Parking Garage at 17th and Anderson Avenue (across from Holiday Inn). You may also park in the garage for the fee of $1.50 per hour or street parking is available AFTER 9 AM. For more K-State visitor information, call 785-532-7275 or visit www.k-state.edu/parking/visitor.html. For lessons after 5 PM, we recommend that you park in the West parking lot off Denison Avenue. AFTER 5 PM no permit is required.

SWIM PROGRAM MAKE-UP AND REFUND POLICY:When a class is canceled due to severe weather or other circumstances when a lesson cannot be provided by UFM, a make-up class will be scheduled OR a refund will be issued in the amount of the missed lesson.

When class participants are absent from class, UFM will not issue a refund or make-up session due to staff availability, budgeting, and scheduling constraints.

NOTE: Minimum enrollment for all classes is 4. If less than 4 enroll, classes may be combined, changed to private or semi-private lessons, or canceled.

SUMMER SWIMENROLLMENT PROCESS!

We are again implementing a staggered enrollment process this semester in an effort to improve the registration process. This is an attempt to alleviate the high traffic and overload of our registration system.

Please note: UFM has limited use of the K-State Natatorium and we strive to offer the maximum number of lessons possible during our assigned pool use times. There is typically very high demand for private swimming lessons. The number of spots in private lessons is extremely limited -- sometimes only 1 or 2 spots in each time slot. The number of private swim lessons we are able to offer is based on the number of swim instructors who apply and are hired.

Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis. Once opened, classes remain available for registration until full. If a class is full, please add your student’s name to the waitlist online. As swim staff become available, spots will be offered to waitlisted students in the order in which they were received. All classes are dependent on staff availability and are subject to change.

Please refer to the schedule below when planning your enrollment.

We encourage you to enroll using our online system.

Did you know...

In 2007, UFM added 15 photovoltaic panels to demonstrate the value of solar energy in a home setting. UFM was the first small organization in Kansas to be on the grid. An independent outgrowth of this project was the creation of the Flint Hills Renewable Energy and Efficiency Cooperative (FHREEC). This group teaches UFM classes on solar energy, then organizes bulk purchases of solar panels and helps homeowners install the solar panels at no cost.

A varietal wine is a wine made primarily from a single named grape variety, and which typically displays the name of that variety on the wine label. Examples of grape varieties commonly used in varietal wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot. Wines that display the name of two or more varieties on their label, such as a Chardonnay-Viognier, are blends and not varietal wines. - Wikipedia

World War II (the European Theater)Presented by Robert Smith, Ph.D.Wednesdays, June 5, 12 & 19 • 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.Meadowlark Hills Community Room - Manhattan$50 (Discount with additional classes)

World War II, the European Theater, will examine the world’s most destructive war which began on September 1, 1939. While the course title implies a focus on

Europe, the class will also examine the ancillary conflicts in North Africa, the Middle East, and Persia. The first class will review the background for war, the German advances of 1939-1941, and America’s subsequent entry. The second class will focus on the titanic struggle in Russia, the campaigns in North Africa, and Sicily. The final class examines the Allies return to Europe with the D-Day landings, the 1943-1945 Russian counteroffensives, the liberation of Western Europe, and the fall of the Third Reich.

The Second American Revolution: An Objective Study of the Current Political Climate in the U.S. Presented by Jed DunhamThursdays, June 13, 20 & 27 • 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.Meadowlark Hills Community Room - Manhattan$50 (Discount with additional classes)

This course will explore the underlying causes of the current political division within the United States by examining the impact of current events, their exploitation by social media, and the changing landscape of the political machine since the 2016 Presidential Election. By focusing on the timeline of events we will better understand how those events are then used to either enforce or spin an existing political narrative. The class will examine the 2015-2016 election cycle with an emphasis on the objective presentation of events and an examination of the Russian influence through the use of “Fake News”. We will conclude by providing the strong, critical-thinking tools which will make the 2020 Presidential Election, if not more enjoyable, then at least bearable.

The WillowsPresented by KelLee Parr Wednesdays, July 10, 17 & 24 • 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.Meadowlark Hills Community Room - Manhattan$50 (Discount with additional classes)

For the readers of Orphan Train comes the true story of a second wave of humanity that traveled to the Midwest by train. Not well documented in American history,

over 100,000 pregnant, unwed young women traveled mostly by train to Kansas City in the early to mid-1900s. They would live in one of several maternity facilities before giving birth, signing their babies over for adoption, and returning home empty handed and heartbroken.

Teen Mentoring!

To apply or for more information about the mentoring program, visit www.tryufm.org or email [email protected]

The UFM Teen Mentoring program is designed to create an environment

that is safe, supportive and healthy for the teenagers involved. Available to

middle school and high school students, students and mentors play games,

participate in off-site activities and talk about topics that are relevant to

today's teenagers. Some of the topics are difficult to talk about in a school or

other social setting such as drug use, self-harm, or having suicidal thoughts.

Others are easier discussions, such as respect, depression or anxiety. At

UFM, we hope to create an environment where all middle school and high

school participants can be real about who they are and what's going on in

their world. Our desire is to offer friendship and to be a positive resource as

teenagers navigate the confusing path of adolescence and school.

Summer Board Games Workshop for Teens

Focused on improving multiple facets of literacy through the teaching of “prestige” board games, which are more sophisticated and are typically found at specialty retailers. The

workshops will take place in two parts, with games available in both basic and advanced skill levels. These will be played in groups with guided practice and with open play for students to

follow. The games used will advance in complexity from week to week. Limited to the first 24 registered students!
