1 UESI InTouch August 2010 August 2010 Vol.XII No.8 Rs 2/- VISION STATEMENT UESI seeks to evangelize post matric students in India, nurture them as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, that they may serve the Church and society. Chhaisgarh (known as the Land of Opportunities) was formed out of MP on 1 Nov. 2000. It is the 10th largest state with an area of 1, 35,194 sq. kms and a total population of 2.1 cr. It is divided into 18 dis- tricts. 44% of the land is covered by forests. The literacy rate of the state is 65%. The languages spoken mainly are Hindi & Chhaisgari. The state is rich in natural resources like iron- ore and coal. However, economically it is an underdeveloped state with very few industries. The state has 9 universities and 400 colleges with a student population of approx 5 lacs. Brief History of UESI Ministry For a long time, graduates were pray- ing for starting ministry among students in Chhaisgarh area. As a result of their prayers, in 1979 Bro. John M. Prasad, a for- mer Indore EU member, came to Chhais- garh as an evangelist of St Thomas Evan- gelical Church. At the same time, Bro. Babu Cherian Earaly (a former member of Warangal EU) joined Bhilai Steel Plant with an earnest desire for student ministry. They met at Bhilai accidentally at a time when Late Mrs Uma Masih & Bro. Richard Masih were planning their maiden visit. They arranged 1-day evangelistic meetings at Bilaspur, Bhilai, Rajnadgaon, and Rajhara. They, alongwith Bro. Emmanuel Prakash, Dr Philip Nelson and Dr Mon Abraham, planned the first EU camp (Evangelistic) at Rajnandgaon in June 1980, in which about 80 students participated. As a result of this camp, evangelistic Bible study cells were started in Bhilai & Rajhara and an EU was formed at Bhilai in 1982. Now we have an affiliated EU Commiee & also an EGF at Bhilai. By the outreach efforts of Bhilai and late Bro. Kuriako- se, ministry was started at Raipur in the early 80’s. Evangelistic retreats were conducted from time to time and an Evangelistic Bible study cell started functioning but didn’t sustain. The ministry at Raipur was revived again with the posting of co-ordina- tors, Bro. Mathew Abraham (1995-’97) and Bro. James Samuel (1998-’99). Now we have EU & EGF commiees and staff based here. Ministry in Bilaspur started as a result of a Prayer Conference on 27 Nov 2000. Bro. Suresh, (who was then co-ordinator of MPEGF based at Sagar) and graduates from Bhilai started visiting Bilaspur regularly and their sustained efforts saw the work taking roots in Bilaspur. Now we have EU & EGF commiees and a staff, Mr Laxman & family based there. By the continued outreach efforts, the ministry progressed though at a slow pace at Rajnandgaon (now with EU & EGF Commiees) and Dalli Ra- jhara. We also have graduates and student contacts at Champa, Korba, and Jagdalpur. As a result of the bifurcation of the state, aſter much prayer and consultation Chhais- garh EGF Commiee was consti- tuted on 2 Oct. ‘06. Future Plans The CGEGF commiee deliberated on the broad road map and decided that the state will be decentral- ized by 2015 and the remaining 11 districts of the state to be reached by 2020. Since Chhaisgarh has a large scope for ministry in terms of unreached areas, it was planned that we will target to have recognizable ministry in follow- ing 5 districts by the end of academic session 2013. Chhattisgarh (known as the Land of Opportunities) was formed out of MP on 1 Nov. 2000. It is the 10th largest state with an area of 1, 35,194 sq. kms and a total population of 2.1 cr. It is divided into 18 dis-tricts. 44% of the land is covered by forests. The literacy rate of the state is 65%. The languages spoken mainly are Hindi & Chhattisgari. The state is rich in natural resources like iron-ore and coal. However, economically it is an underdeveloped state with very few industries. The state has 9 universities and 400 colleges with a student population of approx 5 lacs. Brief History of UESI Ministry For a long time, graduates were pray-ing for starting ministry among students in Chhattisgarh area. As a result of their prayers, in 1979 Bro. John M. Prasad, a for-mer Indore EU member, came to Chhattis-garh as an evangelist of St Thomas Evan-gelical Church. At the same time, Bro. GS Speaks

Last 3 issues we focused on the building of Babel tower and the aftermath as found in of Gen. 11. In the same chapter we find the begin-ning of the account of Abraham. Do you see any link between both? By generating languages, God created nations and He wanted them to be blessed through Abraham. You must have by now concluded that our next topic of study is Abraham. I find it to be too tough to pres-ent a study on the life of Abra-ham because it is so familiar to us. Yet the trust in God emboldens me. One fascinating thing about Abraham is that his ac-count is spread over 15 chapters in Genesis (11 – 25) and the latter part of Genesis also focuses on his two successive generations. The word ‘Abraham’ is men-tioned not less than 74 times in the New Testament. What an amazing lion’s share he has in the Scripture! It speaks of the importance given to his life in the Bible. We shall study the life of Abraham under 3 headings – Call, Commitment, and Covenant (God’s covenant with him). Call: God’s call to Abraham and his response. A. Call to go out of Comfort Zone: “The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mes-opotamia, before he lived in Haran, and said to him, ‘Depart from your country and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you.’” (Acts 7:2 3).

For him the tug was between living in the prosperous and civilized city of Ur and going away from idolatry

following the true God. But he won the war. This was a decisive step. Abraham might have been past 50 years when he left Ur, because he was 75 when he departed from Haran. Can we think of mid-life crisis that must have set in in him? Amidst all uncertainties, Abra-ham set out his journey. B. Call to go to an unknown

place: God said to Abraham “Go … to the land I’ll show you”. The response of Abraham was that - “He went out, not knowing where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8). After he landed in Canaan, God said to him “To your offspring, I’ll give this land” (Gen. 12. 7). C. Call to believe the normally unbelievable: When he did not have a single child, God said, “I’ll make you a great nation and . . . families of the earth be blessed” (Gen. 12.2-3). Abraham believed it. Does this commendable life of Abraham speak to us? Is there a mission call we have been dodging all these years? Is there any humanly speaking impossible task that God is asking us to accomplish? Let us pray to him for guidance and yield to His will that He will bless us and make us a blessing to many. Dr David Jayakumar [email protected]

By God’s grace, we successfully conducted the V An-nual Conference of Uttarakhand Evangelical Graduates Fellowship and AGM 2010 from 28-30 May. Prayerfully we had decided the conference theme: "Building, Bear-ing and Binding together, Eph 2:20, 4:12." Mr P.C. Varghese, shared God’s Word. We have been really strengthened and renewed by his messages. He

spoke about unity among graduates and he stressed that there should not be any barriers among graduates. He challenged that our lives to be Christ centred and God-glorifying. He also shared that if any one wants to be a successful Christian he/she should give the first portion of everything to God. Mr Jacob Verghese, Zonal Secretary, expounded on the UESI’s 3rd Aim: Testimony. Rev. P. K. Tan-dy, former President, UKEGF shared on World Missions. Mr Andriyas Singh, President of UKE-GF and NICC shared on the importance of fel-lowship. P & E Cell of UKEGF presented Vision 2020 for the state.

During the AGM, we reviewed the ministry. The action plan for 2010-’11 was presented and discussed. The new committee was dedicated. A plan for acquisition of land for conference centre and office was also approved. Narsimha Rao, Co-ordinator Venkatswamy, Director

ASSAMAssam has a population of 2.7 cr. comprising of Hin-dus (64.9%), Muslims (30.9%), Christians (3.7%), and Sikhs (1.1 %). The state is rich in tea and oil. UESI ministry started in 1960 with 2 students - Mr Tali Alinger and (late) Mr Lalwai coming from Kolkota to do their Masters Degrees in Guwahati University. The same year, with their initiative the ministry spread to Dibrugarh, then later on to Jorhat in 1972, Diphu in 1978, and later in Silchar.Assam is not only the gateway of North-East but the educational hub.

The State is divided into 3 regions. Out of 27 districts, only 5 districts are reached; namely Kamrup, Sonapur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, & Kachar. The state has 9 affili-

ated EU’s and 1 functional

EU.The State EGF was

formed in 1992 with the initiative of Dr A.K Lama

and Mr Manoj Jacob. At present 5 EGF units are functioning in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Diphu, Guwahati, and Makunda; and in two places there are EGF contacts. The ministry has not been able to impact the local churches which is a challenge. The local graduates are very few. The local students are not much interested in the concept of cell groups but rather prefer bigger gatherings which as a result lead to dearth of local graduates. Please join hands with us for more mission minded students and that graduates will join in this state to expand the UESI work in different educational institutes. We welcome any EU student or graduate coming to Assam to keep in touch with UESI-NE.

MANIPURThe word “Manipur” is derived from the Sanskrit words “Mani” and “Pur” which literally mean “a jewelled land” or “the land of jewels.” Surrounded by blue hills and with an oval-shaped valley at the centre, rich in art and tradition and surcharged with nature’s pristine glory, Manipur is a melting pot of culture. Nestled on a plateau and surrounded by nine sub-Himalayan ranges of the hills, Manipur is the place that gifted the game of Polo to the world. Decorated by innumerable beautiful flora and inhabited by a num-ber of attractive fauna, Manipur shines with nature’s glow. UESI Ministry in ManipurManipur’s UESI ministry was started under the initiative of Prof. Lalawia, a Professor of Phys-ics in DM College, Imphal, in 1962. The ministry then spread to other parts like Churachandpur in 1964, Tamenglong 1973, Ukhrul 1980, and Tadubi, Senapati District in 1999.At present, we have 1 staffworker, 3 co-ordinators, 7 affiliated EUs, 19 functional EUs, and 5 EGF groups actively engaged in UESI ministry. The state has good potential as far as the spiritual life of graduates and students are concerned. The state EUs and EGFs have nurtured many students and graduates who have taken up responsible positions in Christian and other organizations in the state, country and around the world. We seek your prayer support for the further growth of the ministry. We thank God for He has been faithful to us in providing committed students and graduates.

The Camp started with a great enthusiasm with 20 students (12 boys & 8 girls) from MP, W. Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, & Jharkhand. One student (Girl) left after 2 days due to unavoidable circumstances. Every-day began with a mean-ingful time of worship led by different groups of students. Bible expo-sitions by Dr Himadri Sinha our senior gradu-ate (Ranchi) rendered to the students the truths from II Timothy and Bro. Selvadurai shared differ-ent aspects of Disciple-ship and Leadership. During devotions, 5 students committed their lives for fulltime ministry and 5 others committed themselves to become tentmakers. We had a wonderful and meaningful time of fun and games during picnic. 2/2 was new to most students and they really enjoyed it and were encouraged by one another in sharing. We set a part half day for fasting prayer where we divided students and staffs into groups and prayed for UESI ministry in India and for our country. Special dinner was very touching to all students and

they felt proud to be a part of this ministry where so much of love and concern for students were shown. There was a time given to all the groups and individu-als to present their talents during talent night for God’s

glory. We praise God for all His provisions and in His suf-ficiency we could meet all our needs. In the middle of the camp there was a time when Jharkhand State Com-mittee members met and interacted with students after their meeting. Since the number of staff was good, we were able to spend quality time with all the students. Some students’ responses:-

Atul, Hajipur, Bihar, “My faith was strengthened through doctrines.”Anuradha, Purnea, Bihar “It was the best experience I ever had in preparing for GBS and my aim is fulfilled.”Samson, Chaibasa, Jharkhand, “I am amazed to know that UESI is purely based on the Bible and it motivated me to serve through it as a fulltime minister.” Preeti – MBBS student, Chhattisgarh, “I always thought that Evangelism is not my work but of pastors. Personal Evangelism session benefited me to change thoughts that it is even my responsibility given by God.”Rakesh Kumar Arun – Agartala ICEU- “Now I am confident that I can under-stand the Scriptures more deeply and help others, too. I will explore the pre-cious pearls.”We thank the Lord for His presence and guidance throughout the CMTC.Rajkumar SenapathyDirector, [email protected]

5 UESI InTouchAugust 2010

Just a few days before the camp got started, political clashes took place in Darjeeling and Kalimpong where the camp was to be held. The situation compelled us to find an alternative venue within 5 days before the camp finally set off. With much prayer and fasting, the CMTC core group settled for Himalayan Free Church a retreat centre in Matigara, Siliguri.12 girls & 8 boys attended the camp from different parts of the country: Andhra Pradesh, Arunach-al Pradesh, Meghalaya, Na-galand, Orissa, and West Bengal. Sessions During The CampDipesh and Themboi Kun-du, graduates from Santini-ketan, WB, were Camp Par-ents who also enlightened us spiritually through 5 de-votional sessions. Isaac and Shirley Thomas worked hard to get PBS and GBS digested in the minds of the students, ready to use when they go back to their respective EUs. Isaac also taught the first 5 Doctrines.Sushil Nayak taught the next 4 Doctrines and led the first 3 devotional sessions on 2 Timothy which were enriching.Jerry Lapang, the Arunachal Staff kept the students alive and learning all through 5 Handbook sessions and one Practical Talk. Mrs Wanni Lapang took 1, Hand-book Session, and a Practical session.Jeremiah Doumai unleashed from the rich treasure of his experience and knowledge in 4 practical talks, 2 devo-tional sessions, and one Handbook session.Philip Maikho forced the students to smile and learn in 3 Handbook Sessions and 2 practical talks.Dr Chacko Jacob, a graduate from IIT Kharagpur, made it very clear about the Doctrine of the Second Coming of Christ and a practical session on Worship and Prayer.Deki Ongmu, a graduate from Kalimpong, practically helped the students to have a clear understanding on Time Management. The resource persons gave their best in all the sessions and the students could learn much out of all of them. Church VisitThe campers were divided into two groups and could visit two churches and shared about the UESI and presented a special song in each church. In fact, the churches came to know about the UESI ministry for the first time and they even assured us to support the min-istry in prayers. It was a blessed time for us together. PicnicWe went to Darjeeling and everyone had a good time of

sight-seeing and shopping in the crowded hill-station, and also the scary return driving amidst the thick fog. Special Dinner & Talent NightThe camp Director himself prepared the special dinner, on 9 June ’10 in which 9 local graduates, leaders, and a pastor joined us. It was a great and meaningful time together as we shared about UESI ministry and they showed their willingness to take initiative in starting

the ministry in Siliguri. The grand dinner was followed by the talent time, full of excitement, recreation, and fun. The students brought out the best of their talents. Personal ReflectionComing toward the end of the camp was more thrilling and realistic as students unfolded the crux of what they had learnt during this 13-day camp. It was a joy to know how much they had grasped and made commitments. After the students shared, the se-niors prayed for each one of them so that they

would keep their commitments. The time of sharing ended with a short exhortation and words of apprecia-tion and thanks by the Director. Special AcknowledgementThe report would be incomplete without mentioning the contribution of Dominic and Wensley, 2 students from Singapore FES. They had been with us helping one day ahead of the camp and for about 6 days. It was a blessing to all of us! Dr Chacko Jacob’s presence was a blessing to the students & UESI ministry as he did a good networking with the local graduates & churches. Excerpts from the Students“Shakepeare’s pen falls short to describe the blessings showered on me during this 13 days. CMTC 2010 has been the greatest experience so far.” - Always Rockin’ Kevin, “…I have found a new life and a new purpose to live for.” - Lemken, Varanasi“It has been a life changing experience for me.” - Mughabo Wotsa, Arunachal Pradesh“I’m thoroughly blessed; can’t put it in words.” -Barjona, Kolkata.

7 UESI InTouchAugust 2010

After a lot of anxiety and uncertainty as many drop outs were there till the last moment, CMTC Dehradun began. God enabled us to see 20 students coming from different states with a heart to learn and grow in the Lord. In the opening sharing session, it was exciting to know that a good number of students came with an intention to learn How to study the Bible, how to know God’s will and to know more about the ministry. Keeping this in mind all the seniors geared up to give their best and it was fulfilling to see their expectations met at the end of the camp. We had a team of staff and graduates who were dedicated to teach and help students.

Students were divided into groups for family prayer, QT sharing, and other group activities. Mrs & Mr Yoke (EGF member, HP) engaged the students with lots of creative activities in the afternoon. Most of the students did their best efforts to learn and some even were willing to take additional PBS passages to equip themselves. Some weaker students made extra effort to cope with the pressure. Seniors could give personal time to all the students helping them in different areas of their lives. All the students decided to do their PBS regularly and to carry out their responsibilities faith-fully in their own respective EUs in the coming days. Practical talks helped students to think and respond to the issues students face in their campuses and the place of stay. Living together and learning was a great experience for many. The tits and bits of love and care touched many lives. Both Sundays we got opportunity to introduce UESI ministry in churches and many agreed to send their children to EU Bible studies. A time was set apart on a Sunday for fasting and prayer, a new experience for some. The General Secretary exhorted us from the Word to trust God against impossibilities. It was interesting to see a few students contributing towards the needs of the camp. Picnic to Mussoorie

was a refreshing time for them from the hectic ses-sions. We could see some students coming out of their shell as this is the first time they got opportunity to lead and be in charge for certain responsibilities. It is great to see students getting equipped in every area of their lives. They all went back with a passion to share the Gospel with others, to start cell groups and to entrust whatever they had learned to reliable people. Please uphold them in prayer so they will stick to their deci-sions and shine for the Lord in their places. Kamlesh, Kullu HP: “Testimony of seniors helped me to recognize the fact that Christian life is a life full of

challenges but can experience God in every walk of our life.” D. Apao, Delhi “This camp made me realize that holiness is possible on earth, to love God is more important than serving God, and the need to come out of comfort zones.”Lum, Bhavnagar, GJ: “I felt so special in this camp. This camp helped me to learn how to manage my time and being a servant leader.”Jackson, Uttrakhand: “The doctrines on man, sin, & salvation realized that I am too special for the Lord. I have decided to be available to the Lord.”Jyoti, Kanpur: “More than the classroom ses-sions, I learned alot by observing the lifestyle of people. I was also touched by the love and

concern of seniors for every participant.” Jacob [email protected]
