    DUAL FULL-BRIDGE

PWM MOTOR DRIVERThe UDN2916B, UDN2916EB, and UDN2916LB motor drivers are

designed to drive both windings of a bipolar stepper motor orbidirectionally control two dc motors. Both bridges are capable ofsustaining 45 V and include internal pulse-width modulation (PWM)control of the output current to 750 mA. The outputs have been opti-mized for a low output saturation voltage drop (less than 1.8 Vtotal source plus sink at 500 mA).

For PWM current control, the maximum output current is deter-mined by the users selection of a reference voltage and sensingresistor. Two logic-level inputs select output current limits of 0, 33,67, or 100% of the maximum level. A PHASE input to each bridge

    determines load current direction.

The bridges include both ground clamp and flyback diodes forprotection against inductive transients. Internally generated delaysprevent cross-over currents when switching current direction. Specialpower-up sequencing is not required. Thermal protection circuitrydisables the outputs if the chip temperature exceeds safe operatinglimits.

The UDN2916B is supplied in a 24-pin dual in-line plastic batwingpackage with a copper lead-frame and heat sinkable tabs for improvedpower dissipation capabilities. The UDN2916EB is supplied in a 44-leapower PLCC for surface mount applications. The UDN2916LB issupplied in a 24-lead surface-mountable SOIC. Their batwing construction provides for maximum package power dissipation in the smallest

possible construction. The UDN2916B/EB/LB are available for opera-tion from -40C to +85C. To order, change the prefix from 'UDN' to'UDQ'. These devices are also available on special order for operationto +105C. The B and LB packages are available in a lead (Pb) freeversion, with 100% matte tin leadframe.

    APPLICATIONS INFORMATION

    PWM CURRENT CONTROL

The UDN2916B/EB/LB dual bridges are designed todrive both windings of a bipolar stepper motor. Outputcurrent is sensed and controlled independently in eachbridge by an external sense resistor (R

    S), internal com-

    parator, and monostable multivibrator.

When the bridge is turned ON, current increases inthe motor winding and it is sensed by the external senseresistor until the sense voltage (V

    SENSE) reaches the level

    set at the comparators input:

    ITRIP

    = VREF

    /10 RS

The comparator then triggers the monostable whichturns OFF the source driver of the bridge. The actualload current peak will be slightly higher than the trip point(especially for low-inductance loads) because of theinternal logic and switching delays. This delay (t

    d) is

typically 2 s. After turn-off, the motor current decays, circulating through the ground-clamp diode and sinktransistor. The source drivers OFF time (and thereforethe magnitude of the current decrease) is determined bythe monostables external RC timing components, wheretoff

    = RTC

Twithin the range of 20 kto 100 kand

    100 pF to 1000 pF.

The fixed-off time should be short enough to keep

the current chopping above the audible range (< 46 s)and long enough to properly regulate the current. Be-cause only slow-decay current control is available, shortoff times (< 10 s) require additional efforts to ensureproper current regulation. Factors that can negativelyaffect the ability to properly regulate the current whenusing short off times include: higher motor-supply volt-age, light load, and longer than necessary blank time.

When the source driver is re-enabled, the windingcurrent (the sense voltage) is again allowed to rise to thecomparators threshold. This cycle repeats itself, main-taining the average motor winding current at the desiredlevel.

Loads with high distributed capaci-tances mayresult in high turn-ON current peaks. This peak (appear-ing across R

    S) will attempt to trip the comparator, result-

ing in erroneous current control or high-frequencyoscillations. An external R

    CC

    Ctime delay should be used

to further delay the action of the comparator. Dependingon load type, many applications will not require theseexternal components (SENSE connected to E).

    LOGIC CONTROL OF OUTPUT CURRENT

Two logic level inputs (l0and I

    1) allow digital selection of the motor

winding current at 100%, 67%, 33%, or 0% of the maximum level perthe table. The 0% output current condition turns OFF all drivers in thebridge and can be used as an OUTPUT ENABLE function.

These logic level inputs greatly enhance the implementation ofP-controlled drive formats.

    During half-step operations, the l0and l

1allow the P to control the

motor at a constant torque between all positions in an eight-step

    TYPICAL APPLICATION

sequence. This is accomplished by digitally

selecting 100% drive current when only onephase is ON and 67% drive current when twphases are ON. Logic highs on both l

    0and l

    1

turn OFF all drivers to allow rapid currentdecay when switching phases. This helps toensure proper motor operation at high steprates.

The logic control inputs can also beused to select a reduced current level (andreduced power dissipation) for hold condi-tions and/or increased current (and availabletorque) for start-up conditions.

    GENERAL

The PHASE input to each bridgedetermines the direction motor windingcurrent flows. An internally generateddeadtime (approximately 2 s) preventscrossover currents that can occur whenswitching the PHASE input.

All four drivers in the bridge output canbe turned OFF between steps (l

    0= l

    1 2.4 V

resulting in a fast current decay through theinternal output clamp and flyback diodes. Thfast current decay is desirable in half-step a

high-speed applications. The PHASE, l0,andinputs float high.

    Varying the reference voltage (VREF

)provides continuous control of the peak loadcurrent for micro-stepping applications.

Thermal protection circuitry turns OFFall drivers when the junction temperaturereaches +170C. It is only intended to protecthe device from failures due to excessive

junction temperature and should not implythat output short circuits are permitted. Theoutput drivers are re-enabled when the

    junction temperature cools to +145C.

The UDN2916B/EB/LB output driversare optimized for low output saturationvoltagesless than 1.8 V total (source plussink) at 500 mA. Under normal operatingconditions, when combined with the excellenthermal properties of the batwing packagedesign, this allows continuous operation ofboth bridges simultaneously at 500 mA.
