1st Year Students

Get good grades: Employers look for consistent

academic performance. Maintaining a good academic

record shows employers you have a great work ethic and

the ability to learn new concepts and ideas.

Identify your interests, strengths, challenges and

values: In order to know your career goals, you first

have to understand who you are. Think about what really

interests you, what skill sets you have, what skills you

need to gain and what you value in your life.

Investigate career opportunities: Do informational

interviews with employers or do some work shadowing.

Attending career fairs and employer presentations on

campus can help you investigate career options. Go on-

line and visit sites for exploring careers, such as

www.gradireland.com and www.ucd.ie/careers.

Wherever your interest lies, get involved: Joining

a club, society, sport or volunteering is a great way to

contribute to the community and gain valuable skills

that employers look for, such as teamwork and time

management.

Develop your communication skills/teamwork

skills: No matter what your future career is going to

be, it is imperative that you learn how to communicate

effectively on a one-to-one basis, as well as in a team

environment.

Writing skills: It goes without saying that computer

skills are very important, but just as important is your

ability to write cohesively with no errors.

Obtain an internship: Internships give you an inside

view to see if you will like a particular career. They are a

great way to establish contacts in your chosen field and

can lead to full-time employment.

Broaden your horizons through study abroad:

Studying abroad can be a great way to see another part

of the world, to challenge yourself, gain appreciation for

diversity and prepare you for a global workforce.

Meet your lecturers: You should try to get to know

your lecturers, as they too have knowledge about

industries or sectors you might be interested in.

Use the Career Development Centre throughout

your University experience: Come on in, whether it’s

figuring out what you can do with your degree or having

your CV looked at for a potential internship; the Career

Development Centre is here to help!

Overall; 2012/13 can best be summed up as UCD Career Development Centre’s most exciting, vibrant and challenging year yet!During the last 12 months, staff at the Centre worked hard to maximise engagement with our core customer groups- students, university staff and employers with major pay-offs apparent. We had the highest number of graduate recruiters attend our Career Fairs and deliver recruitment presentations and workshops on campus which were in turn attended by the largest number of students recorded in recent years. In addition, we complemented professional services delivered at the Career Development Centre with bespoke services developed for UCD Colleges and Schools. Our career guidance and coaching services were consistently fully booked and the introduction of late opening each Wednesday was very well received by UCD students.

Over and above the development and delivery of a wide range of professional services, members of staff at the Centre have worked on a number of University projects including the new UCD Framework for Internships. The importance of internships is well documented and represent a vehicle through which students may secure graduate work. In December 2012, the UCD Academic Council approved a new UCD Internship Framework and UCD Career Development Centre has been tasked with implementing key aspects of the initiative and looks forward to enabling connection between graduate recruiters, academic staff and students to be developed further. In support of the implementation of the Framework, UCD Career Development Centre welcomed Dr Kate Collins and Dr Teresa Lee to our team.

Graduate attributes and employability skills are a key focus for the work of UCD Career Development Centre and the team continued to engage, develop and expand a range of credit and non-credit bearing personal and professional development and employability initiatives across the curriculum. In addition to traditional classroom based delivery, we were pleased to work with colleagues in developing a “mini-module” of e-learning resources to be offered to some part-time students at UCD College of Science during 2013/14.

UCD Career Development Centre is implementing a continuous quality improvement approach and feedback informs our professional practice, ensuring what we do is relevant, successful and effective. We are particularly pleased with a customer satisfaction survey indicating that 100% of respondents recommend our guidance services to friends and restructuring Career Fairs along industry sector lines in light of feedback has enhanced these events from both employer and student perspectives.

Enabling students to engage and develop at UCD and make the move from higher education into graduate work and graduate study has been a core objective and key factor in the recent success of UCD Career Development Centre as we endeavour to enhance service levels and customer engagement. In addition to traditional services, the team has engaged in other learning initiatives. In partnership with UCD School of Computer Science and Informatics, the Computer Science Opportunities Day effectively combines academic prize giving, student-employer speed networking and a Career Fair with a twist when final year students poster display final year projects to visiting employers, discussing their research and its application to industry. In addition, a fourth Corporate Finance & Consultancy Study Visit to the City of London was complemented with the first Corporate & Commercial Law Study Visit to London in March 2013. Both events continue in partnership with UCD School of Law and the UCD Quinn School of Business.

Thank you for taking time to read this report which I hope you find informative and helpful. I place great value in close working relationships with university staff, students and graduate employers and look forward to continuation and development of our partenrships. Should you have any comments on this review, please do contact me at [email protected]

Facilitated by facebook and twitter accounts, our direct communication channels to students have never been healthier. An evolving wesbite of extensive resources in career information, advice and guidance and vacancies makes services accessible to all of the UCD student population either in person or electronically. During 2012/13, our likes on facebook increased to 4563(an increase of 58%) and 1858 students follow us on twitter (an increase of 97%).

The UCD Career Development Centre is keen to recognise the effort and commitment of UCD students to their own personal and professional development and welcomes the Universty’s decision to inlcude non-credit bearing Certificates in Skills for Working Life and Work-Related Learning on students’ Diploma Supplement which is a record of students’ progression, attainment and engagement during their time at UCD.

Extended CV advisory services also operated throughout the core graduate recruitment season to deal with incessant demand for application advice and coaching. Guidance sessions were fully booked throughout the year, including vacation periods. Despite enhanced web-based materials, high quality video and podcasts, our flagship publication- the UCD Career Guide, students obviously value personalised career guidance. Feedback from a sample of 131 students who had used this service indicated 100% would recommend it to others and 92% stated that the service fully met their needs.

To cater for the large student population at UCD, much of the work undertaken is in the form of large and small group work. Often comprising lectures and workshops developed as central services or bespoke sessions delivered at School level; work is informed through close relationships with employers and an expert understanding of graduate recruitment and selection is maintained. In addition to traditional employer interface through Careers Fairs, many initiatives such as a 6-week career development programme with students’ of Engineering are delivered in partnership with employers, connecting the classroom to workplace success. At its core, the UCD Career Development Centre is committed to engaging students early in personal and professional development to enhance and implement effective plans for career progression and career management.

2. Student attendance at Employer Presentation and Workshops

Organising Career Fairs along industry sector lines was welcomed by students and employers. Combined with enhanced event marketing a marked increase in student engagement at Belfield Career Fairs is evident.

Making more effective use of the many resources available on the CDC website has been a key objective which has met with success in unique number of individuals using CDC website.

Employers continued to target and recruit UCD students through presentations and workshops on skills such as team work & leadership, Emotional Intelligence at work, Networking and Commercial Awareness.

Engaging more students in co-curricular activity is a key objective for the Centre and last year more students than ever undertook programmes in Work-Related Learning (Corporate Study Visits to City of London) and in Skills for Working Life.

To meet growing student demands for one-to-one career guidance interviews, services were extended to cover the working week and an additional Wednesday evening session added.

Offered weekly throughout semester one, dedicated CV advice session allowed students to avail of one-to-one guidance sessions and/or to attend small group sessions where peer learning was encouraged.

UCD Career Development Centre distributes many 1000’s of publications written specifically for students by specialist publishing houses and partner organisations- Prospects (www.prospects.ac.uk) and Gradireland (gradireland.com). Despite social media and web use, publications remain popular with many students and constitute a valued resource, enabling students to better understand career sectors, jobs graduates do and connect to recruiters. During 2012/13, 5500 copies of the UCD Career Guide were distributed on campus and 5000 copies of the “University Experience: Make Sure it Counts” flyer was distributed to incoming first year students in September 2012

“I just wanted to thank you for your sessions: Professional Footprint. Out of all sessions, I found this the most interesting and the most practical. I don’t think I’ll find interviews so daunting and I won’t be afraid to promote myself or network on linked-in. It was fantastic to find out how to approach CV’s as both on-line and hard copy resources vary considerably in the advice they give which can be confusing. It was very beneficial getting feedback on my CV and interview technique not just from you but also from the class. You’ve given me a lot more confidence and courage and I cannot thank you enough. I really think every graduate student should take this course, it’s invaluable”. PhD candidate

“I’d like to thank the Career Development Centre for all the help I have been given in getting an internship at BNY Mellon over the summer. I may have had the ability and experience necessary for the position but there is no doubt that I would not have got it without your guidance in forming a strong CV, in what to put in a cover letter and in succeeding in an interview. Your careers advice material and videos online were also fantastic. You couldn’t have been more helpful. This is one of the best services in UCD”. Economics and History student

“The Corporate and Commercial Law Study Visit to the City of London enhanced my commercial awareness, self assurance, team working and networking skills. I thoroughly enjoyed the interactive sessions with employers as it is the best way to learn about what a firm is about and experience the work they carry out. I got a real sense of what it would be like to work in London and I was able to see which firms were suited to me, helping me to target the firms I feel best suit my career needs and plan” Law student

Career and professional development are an integral outcome of higher education. Increasingly, Career Development Advisers work in partnership with academic staff on a diverse range of issues and service provisions including:

» Embedding career development and employability within the curriculum.

» Developing bespoke programmes of career education, information, advice and guidance.

» Advising staff on developing internships for students within the curriculum and implementing the UCD Framework for Internships.

» Developing Labour Market Information and occupational awareness for programme and module planning and subject review.

» Developing and delivering personal development planning within the curriculum.

» Providing graduate destination data through the annual First Destination Return.

» Making connections between university staff and relevant employers and professional bodies and organisations.

» Establishing and enhancing lines of communication for the promotion of career development activities and the notification of appropriate job opportunities to specific groups of students

At UCD, Career Development Advisers are allocated specific College caseloads. This allows services provided at the Centre to be complemented by services tailored to the needs of academic staff and students. This approach allows advisory staff to build expert knowledge of a College and its programmes, allows Centre- College relationships and lines of communication to develop and for targeted employers to be engaged on behalf of UCD Schools.

Working with Academic StaffExperience shows that tailored provision offered in partnership with academic staff is a most effective and preferred model for our work with UCD Schools. Formalised School-Centre relationships are particularly welcome and evident at UCD School of Law and UCD School of Bio molecular and Biomedical Sciences in particular where academic colleagues Dr Oonagh Breen and Dr Hilary McMahon respectively fuse the services of the Career Development Centre and needs of both students and School. Through Centre-College partnerships we ensure that the career education, information and guidance services developed at UCD are relevant, well planned, professionally delivered and evaluated against feedback.

Supporting Postdoctoral Researchers at UCDUCD Career Development Centre offers dedicated career services to stage 1 and 2 Postdoctoral Researchers. Designed to facilitate Researchers Career Planning and enhancement, this Service has become increasingly popular amongst UCD’s early stage researcher population as they plan and implement career ideas in academia and within industry. Researchers are offered a range of supports, such as career coaching, CV development and review and interview skills training. The Career Development Centre also facilitates engagement between researchers and employers through employer-led sector briefings and networking events. In 2012/13, 81 career consultations took place, 128 researchers attended career development workshops and 117 attended employer-led sector briefings and newtworking events.

Increasingly, much of what we do is through discussion and partnerships with academic staff...

Academics said:

“In addition to their obvious role in helping students secure employment post graduation, the assistance provided by staff of the UCD Career Development Centre has been invaluable to our 3rd year BSc (Hons) Food Science students in terms of preparation for their professional work experience (PWE) internships. Staff at the Centre has been most helpful in terms of providing lectures and advice to students on CV preparation and interview techniques. As Food Science PWE coordinator, I am very interested in developing much stronger linkages with Careers, particularly in terms of providing a more professional interface between our students seeking PWE placements and potential host companies.” Dr James Lyng, Senior Lecturer UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science

“Collaboration with the CDC has provided very significant opportunities for undergraduate archaeology students. A seminar series ‘Archaeology and Employability’ run by staff from the CDC and the School of Archaeology has given students the chance to explore the relationship between their degree and employment possibilities both in archaeology and within other sectors. Experience of collaboration with CDC in this series is reflected in discussions of School strategy, curriculum development and module enhancement”. Dr Graeme Warren, Senior Lecturer UCD School of Archaeology

“The School of Computer Science and Informatics has developed a close working relationship with UCD Career Development Centre. Over the past three years this productive partnership has led to the provision of bespoke career planning, ‘soft skills’ development along with job-seeking and interview techniques for students across Computer Science ranging from a 12 week module with first year students and credit bearing career development modules for Springboard students on Graduate Certificates in ICT. Building relationships with employers has been a key strategy of the School and in partnership with CDC, an annual Computer Science Opportunities Day takes place providing students a unique forum whereby employers promote graduate and internship vacancies and final year students showcase the outcomes of their final year projects. The support and professionalism of the CDC is of high standard and facilitates the high rates of employment amongst our graduates. The UCD School of Computer Science and Informatics looks forward to developing this close working relationship further.”

Working with Employers

With links to employer associations and professional bodies, members of staff at the Career Development Centre are proactively engaged in linking education and industry, contributing to Ireland’s economic recovery by connecting recruiter needs with appropriately educated and skilled students and graduates.

We bring employers and students together in different ways to network, connect and establish mutually beneficial relationships. Many bespoke lectures and workshops for example, the 6-week programme “Career Development in Engineering” and “Skills for for Working Life” brought employers on campus to meet students in the classroom, to discuss the skills and knowledge needed to make an effective contribution to the workplace and for further development and career management.

Employers and students also meet during a series of specialist Careers Fairs which are recruitment orientated when exhibitors must have vacancies to promote. In addition many employers visit campus, delivering recruitment presentations and skills workshops facilitated by the Career Development Centre and still more upload current vacancies onto the Career Development Centre searchable vacancy database. Bringing these connections together, it is true to say that the UCD Career Development Centre engages 1000’s of employer opportunities annually to the benefit of UCD students and the University in general.

In addition to working with employers targeting UCD, we reach out to those yet to visit for recruitment purposes. This year outreach allowed the Career Development Centre to bring vacancies to UCD students with more leading employers such as NYSE, National Health Service, Scottish power, E.On, Rolls Royce, Ford, Aston Martin, Tata Steel, Mars, Kraft Foods, Nestle and Bank of England.

Employers have the facility to upload vacancies directly to our user friendly and efficient database via the Careers Connect CRM system. The provision to allow employers to also upload an organisational profile which connects their vacancies to company details has been popular and effective in enabling students to make better informed applications. Our vacancy staff reviews new vacancies, publishing them on our database normally within 24 hours of posting. In addition to vacancies being hosted on our searchable database, where it is appropriate to do so, targeted emails to specific groups of students may be sent.

In October 2013, we were particularly pleased to have Lidl sponsor the Business, Finance and Management Fair and KPMG’s sponsorship of the Centre’s Open Day was very much appreciated.

We would also wish to thank all of our employer partners who contributed to our programmes on campus, hosted UCD students on industrial visits and supported the development of the UCD Career Guide which relies solely on financial support from employers to cover production and publication costs.

The Career Development Centre promotes and develops links with local, national and international employers.

First Destination Return (FDR)

UCD Career Development centre supports students in finding work through employability initiatives, facilitating work experience and work placement and connecting students to employers in the recruitment and selection process.

The staff at UCD Career Development Centre carries out the First Destination Survey of all graduates nine months after course completion in line with Higher Education Authority requirements. Thus, the March 2013 survey was of the class of 2012 and provides a good indication of how UCD graduates fared in finding work, places on programmes of graduate study and training, took time out or who are seeking work at the 31 March census date.

Accessing First Destination Reports at UCDA new suite of reports on UCD graduate destination data was developed and launched during 2012/13. The system, available on the staff intranet, provides detailed information on data at institutional, College, School and programme levels. Between March and June 2013, staff at UCD Career Development Centre managed to record a known destination return rate of 76% of the survey population which is an excellent achievement by the project team led by Sorcha Mulcahy, Deputy Director. UCD Class of 2012

The current economic situation is challenging for final year students and newly qualified graduates seeking quality graduate jobs. It is clear that recruiters expect a particular blend of academic achievement, relevant experience of work and a well developed range of employability skills.

The Pie Chart below represents First Destination Statistics for all students completing Diploma, Degree and Graduate qualifications in 2012 and is based on a return rate of 76% known destinations.
