Certificate of Completion

ORIENTATION CAMPOUT Saturday, June 21st-Sunday, June 22nd

Grab your overnight bag and get ready for a day and night of fun as staff and mentors welcome you to UC Irvine. The campout will take place on the athletic field behind the Anteater Recreation Center, UCI’s state-of-the-art gymnasium. Through this experience, you will explore the campus and find your classrooms, bond with other Summer Scholars through mentor-led activities, and share a meal at a popular on-campus dining hall within UCI’s freshman housing complex, notably named Middle Earth. In the evening, enjoy a movie under the stars where you will meet one of the program’s keynote speakers.

The orientation campout is a perfect way for you to meet the program staff and mentors, to learn the ins and outs of the program before classes begin, and to create a foundation for a successful summer! Learn more about the orientation campout online. For enrolled students only. No parents or guardians.

SUMMER SCHOLAR MENTORSSummer Scholar mentors are current UCI undergraduate students who volunteer their time because they are enthusiastic about contributing to your success and growth this summer.

Each mentor completes formal leadership development training, which refines their leadership skills and reinforces the traits of positive role models.

The Summer Scholar mentors use their energy, creativity, and knowledge about UCI and college life to support you throughout the program.

By participating in study breaks and social activities planned by the mentors, you will gain knowledge and confidence from the mentors’ personal experi-ences. While achieving your academic and personal goals, you will gain the “common” knowledge college students thrive on, enhancing your ability to succeed at any university.

In addition to earning UCI credit on an official UCI transcript, students who complete the program and requirements for participation, will receive a Certificate of Completion, which can be added to the college-preparatory section of your college applications.

Academics and Co-curricular Learning1. UCI CREDIT COURSEEnroll in one UCI credit course of your choice. You may choose to enroll in a course related to your future major or in a topic that interests you and is intended for general education credit at your future alma mater.

Courses are taught by UCI instructors and attended by matriculated UCI students. The instructor will be unaware that you are a high school student, giving you an authentic academic experience. You will receive regular UCI college credit for this course, and your grades will be recorded on an official UCI transcript. Most UCI courses offer 4 units of credit.

2. THE PROGRAM In addition to your UCI credit course, Summer Scholars will meet in seminar style together to learn about university research, student life, and collegiate skills while in a college setting. This cohort experience will allow you to be part of an integrated community of high school students and to learn as a member of a peer group whose active contribution to the classroom encourages knowledge and success. The classroom experience will be a supportive environment where you will develop friendships which promote reflection and personal exploration. With support from faculty, staff and student mentors, you will work as part of a large group and smaller teams, bringing insight and practical application to the classroom curriculum. M/W 3-5pm or T/TH 3-5pm.

(Above) High School Summer Scholars participate in courses with matriculated UCI undergraduates and receive UCI credit.

Visit our websitesummer.uci.eduFor information on selecting a course:

• We recommend students take lower division courses (numbered below 100). Visit our website for a list of recommended courses. If you are interested in a higher-level course, e-mail us at [email protected] to request clearance.

• If you intend to use the course you select toward your high school graduation require- ments, please check with your high school guidance counselor prior to enrollment to confirm that the course you select meets your high school’s graduation requirements. Unfortunately, due to the specific nature of academic advising, UCI Summer Scholar staff is unable to provide academic advising for your course selections.

Academics and Co-curricular LearningCollege learning encompasses more than just the classroom. A very important component of your college experience is what you gain outside the classroom, also known as co-curricular learning. The INSIDE UCI series, collegiate life workshops, and social activities are designed to give you an understanding of the opportunities, resources and experiences you will encounter as a college student and introduce you to other Summer Scholars.

Your Summer Scholar experience will be guided by the enthusiastic and friendly staff in the Summer Session Office as well as by the Summer Scholar Mentors. The mentors are UCI undergraduate stu-dents and former participants in Summer Session programs who volunteer their time to support you, serve as a resource, and plan social events.

View a sample calendar from 2013 on the next page...

INSIDE UCI Ser ies EventsA key part of the High School Summer Scholar Program will be presentations known as INSIDE UCI. These presentations by prominent UCI faculty will give you a “front row seat” to the diverse academic paths and current research of UCI faculty. You will be able to ask them questions about their academic journeys, how they became interested in research, and why they do what they do.

Study Sk ills WorkshopsLearn how to study more effectively, read textbooks, manage time, and effectively prepare for exams. Topics covered in these workshops will help you to refine your skills and better prepare you for college coursework.

Soc ial EventsThe program mentors, current UCI undergraduate students, will plan social events for you to meet other Summer Scholars and to learn about campus life and current student interests. These events will take you behind the scenes to little-known yet in-triguing corners of the University and introduce you to resources that could be available on any college campus, such as specially planned lunch activities, a dance, intramural sports games at the Anteater Recreational Center (ARC), and much more.

Colleg iate L ife EventsCollegiate Life workshops are designed to give you an overview of the opportunities and experiences you will encounter as a college student. Highlights from past summers include:

• College Application Workshop with the UCI Office of Admissions• Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Panel• Healthy Living on a College Campus• Undergraduate Student Panel

“The High School Summer Scholar Program was definitely the best part of my summer! I made so many friends...and the interns really made you feel like you belonged in the group...The best part is that I have kept in-touch with a majority of the people...and luckily for me, I got accepted into UCI, and now I will feel like I already have friends when I get there.” ~ Zach T.
