UAIS October Newsletter October 1, 2018

Dear UAIS Parents, Thank you for taking the time to read our monthly newsletter. I do realize everyone has a packed schedule, but please take the time to read the entire document. The newsletter is the best way to keep you up-to-date with all that is happening at UAIS. This one is full of a lot of important information for you. PSAT/NMSQT Registration Our current juniors are preparing to take the PSAT/NMSQT at all home high schools (Henry Ford II, Stevenson, Eisenhower, and Utica) on October 13th, 2018. UAIS is not a test site for the PSAT/NMSQT. The PSAT/NMSQT has many benefits for juniors, including the opportunity to compete for scholarships and prepare for the upcoming SAT that is scheduled for April. Eligible juniors will automatically be entered into scholarship and recognition competitions by taking the test as a junior. These competitions include the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships not only help you pay for college, but they can also help you stand apart from other students in the college admissions process. UAIS Student Spotlight-Congratulations National Merit Scholars! UAIS is proud to acknowledge Megan Botkin, Katelynn Paluch, and George Paul, as semi-finalist in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students are among 16,000 students in the country to be recognized as semifinalist and will now have the opportunity to compete for a National Merit Scholarship. Best wishes to our three scholars. We are proud of all of you and wish you the best in your academic pursuits! All UAIS AP Scholars and National Merit Semi-Finalists have been invited to attend next week’s UCS Board of Education Meeting. The meeting will take place, Monday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the IRC. Qualifying students received email communication about the recognition and must respond to the UAIS clerk, Mrs. Silbereis, by Thursday, Oct. 4th. The IRC is

located at 14201 Canal Rd. Sterling Heights, 48313. Shuttle busses will be available to transport families to the IRC starting at 6:15 p.m. departing from Havel Elementary. Students are asked to arrive by 6:30. UAIS Parent-Teacher Conferences This year, fall conferences will take place on Thursday, October 11th. This is a ½ day of school for students. Dismissal is at 10:29. The progress report window ends October 5th and conferences are scheduled as follows:

• Thursday, October 11th between 11:30am-2:30pm & 4:30-8:30pm Please mark your calendars. We hope to see you there! IB Exam Registration A reminder to senior parents: all invoices for the May 2019 senior IB exams have been sent home with students. The deadline for making your IB exam payment is Friday, October 26, 2018. Students should enclose the signed acknowledgement page, invoice, and payment in an envelope and place it in the lockbox outside of Mr. Layson’s office. Payments can be made with cash, money order, check, or on PaySchools with a credit card. Those paying online must still complete and submit the signed acknowledgement page and invoice to Mr. Layson’s lockbox. Checks can be made out to ‘UAIS’ with ‘2019 IB Exams’ in the memo line. Families that have been approved for the free/reduced lunch program will receive partial reimbursement after the state of Michigan distributes earmarked monies to districts offering IB and/or AP to their free/reduced lunch students. To apply for the free/reduced lunch program, please visit www.lunchapp.com . Please contact Mr. Layson with any questions or concerns regarding the payment of IB exam fees. Parent Contact Information/SchoolMessenger Annoucements Recently, I have received several emails and/or phone calls from parents who have not been receiving my phone messages or email messages through SchoolMessenger. After verifying contact information, I learned that more than 50 parents had their contacts “blocked” in SchoolMessenger. I have provided the list to our IT department and the blocked emails are being reset. It is very easy to inadvertantly hit the “unsubscribe” button when scrolling through a message. This will block you from our mailing list. Please keep this in mind to ensure that all school communications are delivered. Also, be sure to notify the school of any changes to email addresses or phone numbers so that we can update our records. Senior Yearbook Photos and Class Compiste

Kaiser Studio will be at UAIS on October 16th for any senior who wishes to retake their portrait. This portrait is only for our yearbook and class composite. You are under no obligation to purchase photos unless you desire to do so. The photos taken September and retakes in

Kaiser Studio is the official portrait studio for UAIS. Please feel free to go to other studios for your own personal usage and creativity, but we will not be able to accept those for our formal yearbook and class composite for continuity and quality purposes. This practice was established with the graduating class of 2018. Please contact our yearbook advisor, Mrs. Yeokum if you have questions.

Upperclassmen Dues Reminder Beginning with the 2017-18 school year, all UAIS upperclassmen (sophomores, juniors and seniors) were required to pay class dues to help defray the cost of classroom consumables. This is a consistent practice at ALL UCS high schools. We will continue to collect dues for our upperclassmen for the 2018-19 school year. “Thank You” to all who have paid their dues. (*Class dues are NOT the same as Booster Club dues). The class dues are used to help cover the cost of items that are needed and reordered every year to implement the curriculum. Such items include, but are not limited to: canvases, watercolor paints, water color paper, Matt board, Mosaic adhesive, charcoal paper, acrylic paint, disposable lab coats, gloves, household and lab grade chemicals, adhesives, glue sticks, all lab perishable items, etc. If dues are not submitted for your son/daughter, the appropriate fine will be added to their account and reflected in PowerSchool. This will prohibit involvement in homecoming, senior week activities, (i.e. breakfast, picnic), schedule pick up at registration in the fall, and transcript requests. Cash or checks accepted. Make checks payable to “UAIS” and include your student’s name(s) on the memo line. You may also pay using our PaySchools account. Simply click on the blue link: Class

Group 4 Mandatory Project Attention all junior parents: the mandatory junior Group 4 (sciences) project will take place on Tuesday, February 26th, 2019. The project lasts the entire school day and requires that students stay after school to give group presentations. This project is an IBO requirement. Please mark this date in your calendars now, being aware that this date is the Tuesday following mid-winter break for students and we need all students present! We select this date because it is the week between winter and spring sports and avoids the most conflicts. The Boosters will be providing dinner for the students. We appreciate their willingness to help out with this important endeavor. More specific information will be forthcoming. Please contact your student’s science teacher if you have questions or a potential scheduling conflict. Parent Boosters Update A huge thank you to those families who have donated to the IB a Parent Booster Organization through the payment of dues. Our program, IB a Parent Booster, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds to enrich the educational experience of the students while attending UAIS. This fall, the Boosters have renewed the UAIS subscription to Questia, an online research library with access to books, journals, articles and other college-level material critical to the required work for all of our students. The Boosters is also volunteering to help with the setup of UAIS Homecoming. Throughout the year, the Boosters run many different fundraisers to assist the students and their academic clubs and other activities and competitions regionally, at the state-level, and nationally. They also sponsor school-wide social events. In order to continue to provide this high-level of education, it is necessary for the Parent Boosters to take an active role in funding some of the resources to help ensure our children, their teachers and staff achieve success. They annually request a donation from UAIS parents in the amount of $50 per student. The Boosters need your help to continue to provide financial support for the academic clubs, teacher supplies and student activities. Your donation is tax-deductible! Don’t forget….Tomorrow, October 2nd is the next Booster Club meeting. The meeting will be held in the media center at 7:00 p.m. The Senior Parent Planning Committee will meet before the Boosters at 6:00 p.m. (also in the media center). It would be appreciated if ALL SENIOR PARENTS filled out the Google form at the following link https://goo.gl/forms/IFW7r5tOzcFTNT5A2. This form is used to gather contact information, as well as, parent interest and/or resources for activities. If you have any questions, please contact Lori Deal at [email protected].
