Willingham House – a brief history George Thomason

In 1922, Mr. and Mrs. O.P. Willingham moved into their beautiful Palladian cottage on East Fourth Street next door to Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church. Thirty years later, in 1952, the church purchased the property from the Willinghams. The house has served multiple purposes and has experienced a lot of hard use. In the last month the worn paint, carpets, furnishings have all been lovingly restored and redecorated. The house deserved this facelift and this return to beauty.

Mr. Poundstone, a well known Atlanta architect was engaged to carry out the Willingham’s ideas for a classic home based on classical ideas. A little historical perspective - Andrea Palladio, an Italian architect of the High Renaissance, was the genius behind four books of architectural designs and building plans that greatly influenced European and English architects in the 17th Century for some fifty years until the Baroque ideal replaced this more restrained classicism. The great English architect, Inigo Jones, brilliantly used Palladio’s ideas in his masterful 17th Century buildings such as the Banqueting House, Whitehall and St. Paul’s Church, Covent Garden and a number of important homes outside London.

In America, the great proponent of this style was Thomas Jefferson whose home, Monticello, and whose “academical village,” the original buildings of the University of Virginia, represent the apogee of classicism in America. Just as the two buildings of the Gothic Revival church and the Palladian derived Willingham house exist in obvious contrast, the concepts the two styles represent seem a wonderful metaphor for the mind of Saint Peter’s – a blending of the rational and the romantic. The most obvious Palladian elements of the house are the classical columns of the porch, the arched windows, its balance and symmetry, and the molded panel walls and acanthus leaf brackets of the mantel in the living room.

The interior has been painted shades of blue/green that are from an historical paint palette used in 17th and 18th Century colonial homes. The furnishings reflect 18 century prototypes and the pictures are sympathetic to that style. Interestingly, a lovely copy of Raphael’s “Madonna of the Chair” has been given by Nan Willingham Henson, grand daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.P. Willingham, feeling that it should return to its original home. Nan and Scott Henson recently toured the house and told us stories of life in that place and about furnishings and use of rooms. Her description of the gardens and plantings that once flowed up several flights of terraces over the area of the Hight building, conjured up a sense of beauty and a way of life that has almost vanished.

Many generous donors have contributed to the project, and interested parishioners have taken the restoration past the original hopes. The second floor bathroom was in terrible shape, but one of our loyal families assumed that responsibility. Others have donated furniture and loaned oriental rugs. We will have a printout in the house describing some of the pieces and their histories. Terri will be happy to show you her wall of crosses and crucifixes that bring a little of our Catholic heritage to the house.

The Book of Occasional Services contains a “Celebration for a Home.” Although the Willingham House is no longer strictly a home, it is home to much of our work and thought. Two prayers from that service might be appropriate:

Almighty and everlasting God, grant to this home the grace of your presence, that you may be known to be the inhabitant of this dwelling and the defender of this household; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever.

And also this prayer:

Give your blessing Lord, to all who share this room, that they may be knit together in fellowship here on earth, and joined with the communion of saints in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please visit Willingham House and enjoy the calm and gracious atmosphere.

Letter from Mr. O. R. Willingham

In June of 1952, an exchange of letters took place between Mr. O.P. Willingham and the rector of Saint Peter's, the Reverend W. Russell Daniel, concerning the organist's practice habits. Before the muffling effect of closed windows and air conditioning, and because of the close proximity of the church and the Willingham residence, the loud sound of the organ became quite irritating to Mr. and Mrs. Willingham and to her mother, who lived with them. To further increase the tension, the organist, David Beaty, a professor of music at Shorter College, practiced at late hours. Eventually, the problem became so great that the Willinghams decided to sell the house and move away from the music! Anyone who is having problems with a neighbor should contact Wanda Cantrell, who might have a solution.

Blessing of the animals

Blessing of the animals will take place in the grassy area next to the Church Office building on Fourth Avenue on Sunday, October 7, at 4:00 pm. Refreshments for pets and owners will be provided. Don’t forget to leash your four‐legged friends.

If you lost a beloved animal companion during the year and would like for him/her to be remembered in the St. Francis Day prayers, please call the church office (706 291 9111). There will be boxes at the blessing service for pet food donations to benefit the Humane Society of Rome/Floyd County and their continuing work with abandoned animals in the community.

Overview of children and youth Cameron O’Riley

3yr- Kindergarten- Godly Play The teachers are Sunny and Mark Knauss, Hollye Smith and Cameron Jackson Each week children experience Godly Play, a Montessori-based approach to learning Bible stories and themes through creative story-telling, conversation, activities, crafts and music. The Godly Play curriculum follows the church calendar, introducing children to the rhythm of worship. 1st-4th Grade- Weaving God's Promises The teachers are Jenna Black and Connie Ortmier The theme for this group is Weaving God's Beloved Community. Lessons "cover the story of how we are called by God to live in loving community with one another, to fulfill God's promises for us in the healing of all creation. The New Testament lessons focus on the Gospel of Luke, with its emphasis on our holy calling to care for others. The children will learn what constitutes God's beloved community, including the gospel values of welcome, inclusion, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, justice and liberation." Club 56- The teachers are Dagmar and David Carlton, and Andy and Leigh Ann Anderson Students in grades 5th- 6th will be exploring a compliation of standalone series provided by Leader Resources. Lessons include Bible studies, introductions to the early church, seasons of the church year and they will also incorporate classical art and literature. They began the year with a 6-week course focusing on the Ten Commandments which includes "the old Jewish story "A Letter to God," personal scrapbooks, exploring the concept of covenant, and providing an opportunity for children to memorize the ten commandments." EYC 7th- 12th grade- God Talks The teachers are Brian Hampton & Al Bonnyman This fall students began a new curriculum called God Talks: Multi-Media Enhanced Topical Bible Studies for Youth which incorporates activities for the visual, audiual, and tactile learner. The first topic in the series is titled At Ground Level: Creating, Reforming, and Transforming the World. "This topic-based youth ministry program examines a single theme or concept in some detail over a 2-5 week period of time with the goal of addressing the characteristics of spiritual development." Goals of this program include:

To learn that one has a life-purpose and that it is possible to discern what it is To seek connection with the inner self (spirit, as opposed to the outer self, the ego) To seek connection with God and with the world around one, both natural and human To experience transcendence (meaning seeing how one fits into the bigger picture)

A schedule of leaders for Children's Chapel can be found on p. 6.

Please go to St. Peter's website to sign up for an appointment to have your family portraits made for the new church directory. This is very important. We want every family represented in this directory if possible. Sign up early and get the most convenient time for your family.

Andrew McDaniel Andrew McDaniel was one of forty students selected to participate in the Youth Theological Institute at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in July. This three week program brought students together from across the United Stated, Ireland, Israel, and other countries. Together, they worshipped, studied theology and social justice and engaged in service projects across Atlanta.

Apple pickin’ On Sunday, September 16, 2012, a group from St. Peter's gathered at R&A Orchards in Ellijay, Georgia. Together they picked apples, sampled goodies from the market and enjoyed a beautiful afternoon experiencing God's bountiful harvest. "Keep me as the apple of the eye; Hide me in the shadow of Your wings." Psalm 17:8.

Please help feed the animals

EYC Outdoor adventures continue In September, the EYC traveled to Pigeon Mountain in Walker County, Georgia to climb the Lost Wall. Led by guides Rebecca and Glenn Segrest, 10 EYC and one member of the Canterbury Club had the opportunity to climb some very high and very real rocks. Participants also learned how to enter into contract and communicate with their belayer so that each was given the chance to "climb on." Beginning in July the EYC began participating in a monthly outdoor activity together which to date have including caving, hiking, swimming, and rock climbing. Glenn Segrest had this to say about their first outing to Howard's Waterfall, "This is one of the most positive groups of kids I have ever worked with, and I have led many groups through caves. They do great job of encouraging each other and building each other up. I heard almost no negative comments or tearing each other down. They really are a great bunch of kids." A Journey down the Etowah originally scheduled for October has been postponed to late April or May due to multiple conflicts in schedules. In October the EYC will be participating in the 5k AIDS Walk Atlanta during the afternoon of Sunday October 21st. We will depart following the 10 am service. Please contact Cameron at [email protected] or by phone at 706-506-1578 no later than October 10 if you plan to attend. There is a $10 registration fee per person.

An invitation from EYC and Canterbury Club On Sunday, October 21, 2012, thousands of Atlantans will unite in the largest and most visible fundraising event for AIDS in the Southeast. AIDS Walk Atlanta and 5K Run benefits AIDS Atlanta and eight other participating agencies. These exceptional organizations provide treatment, medications, prevention education, meals, mental health services, child care, substance abuse counseling, pastoral care, and clinical research to help thousands of our families, neighbors and friends living with, affected by, and at-risk for HIV/AIDS in Atlanta. With the eighth highest number of AIDS cases in the country, these Atlanta organizations welcome participants as walkers, runners, and crew members to help address Metropolitan Atlanta’s AIDS crisis. With the support and dedication of volunteers, individuals, teams and corporate sponsors, AIDS Walk Atlanta ands 5K Run raised over $1,000,000 during its 2012 campaign! We are confident that with your involvement, AIDS Walk Atlanta and 5K Run 2012 will reach its goal of raising $1,100,000 this year. The Canterbury Club and EYC invite you to join us as we participate in the 5K AIDS Walk in Atlanta on October 21, 2012 at Piedmont Park. If you are interested in joining the St. Peter's team contact Janice Bracken Wright or Cameron O'Riley by October 10, 2012, at 706 291 9111.
