FOR GRAVITY SEWAGE AND PUMPED PRESSURE APPLICATIONS Cement mortar linings have been successfully used in ductile pipes to convey sewage for many years, especially in pumped pressure conditions. Typical sewerage environments are alkaline and non-aggressive to cement mortar linings. In these non-septic/ non-acidic situations commonly used cements, such as AS 3972 Type SR cements, provide satisfactory long term service. In septic/acidic aggressive sewer environments calcium aluminate cement provides a high level of resistance and is the most appropriate material for most of these applications. AS 3972 Type SR cement is recommended for sulfate levels up to 6,000mg/L for continuous pH values down to 5.5 and for hydrogen sulfide levels up to 0.5mg/L. Calcium Aluminate Cement (CAC) (as specified in AS/NZS 2280) is recommended for sulfate levels up to saturation for continuous pH values down to 4 and for hydrogen sulfide levels up to 10mg/L. BACTERIOGENIC ACID ATTACKA problem common to gravity sewers which run partially fullUnder these conditions anaerobic bacteria reduce sulfates in the effluent to sulfides, in the form of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is then carried to the crown of the pipe by convection air currents. There it oxidises to sulfur or dissolves in moisture to form sulfurous acid, both of which are used as nutrients, for a second set of aerobic bacteria. This bacterial action produces sulfuric acid as shown. This acid destroys Portland cement mortar by reacting with Portlandite and calcium silicate hydrate, dissolving the calcium and leaving the structureless silica gel.Damage can range from superficial attack to complete loss of mortar and subsequent structural integrity.

BACTERIOGENIC ACID ATTACK1 Sulfates produced by bacteria.2 Reduction of sulfates to sulfide by anaeroic bacteria

living in the slime layer.3 Turbulence ejects H2S

dissolved in the effluent into the pipe atmosphere where it is carried by convection to the pipe crown.

4 Oxidation of H2S to sulfur.

5 Transformation of sulfur to sulfuric acid by aerobic bacteria.

6 Dissolution of the cement mortar.

CALCIUM ALUMINATE CEMENT ACCOMMODATES THE EXTREMES OF PH 4 TO PH 12Calcium Aluminate Cement (CAC)mortar linings also protect the internal ductile iron surface from corrosion and tuberculation when conveying the aggressive fluids common in sewage and wastewater pipelines.CAC affords much greater resistance to these environments due to a combination of three main factors:- CAC has stable hydrates containing

no portlandite- CAC has higher neutralisation

capacity than portland cement requiring nearly twice the amount of acid to destroy the same mass of material

- CAC has lower bacteriogenic acid production

CAC provides a cost effective solution to the problems of bacteriogenic corrosion which tend to occur in wastewater pipelines. CAC linings conform to the requirements of AS/NZS 2280.

EXTERNALLY… A ZINC-EPOXY PROTECTION SYSTEMComplete joint and external pipe barrel protection covering all exposed surfaces is effected by application of 200g/m2 of metallic zinc which is then overlayed with an epoxy coating.

FIELD CUTTINGWhen pipes are field cut, the spigot protection requires reinstatement with an approved epoxy. See the TYTON Ductile Iron Pipe Systems, Handling and Installation Manual.

THE TYTON SYSTEMOver the past 50 years there have been many significant developments in TYTON Ductile Iron Pipe Systems covering the full spectrum of materials, manufacturing, quality assurance, products, services, feedback systems, design, distribution, along with handling and installation. The TYTON DI Pipe Systems packages a range of products and services, which are new or have significant enhancements.

All TYTON pipes now feature an added layer of 200g/m2 of metallic zinc beneath the finishing layer. This added corrosion protection system further extends the life of TYTON Ductile Iron Pipes which are designed to meet evolving water industry needs.

STANDARDSTYTONXTREME Pipes are supplied by ISO 9001 accredited manufacturers producing pipes in accordance with AS/NZS 2280 and AS 1646. Pipes are certified to AS/NZS 2280.

TYTON PIPE® AND TYTON FITTINGS RUBBER RING JOINTThe TYTON rubber ring push-in joint is the most robust flexible pipe joint available. It features a single, specially shaped rubber gasket in which the heel of hardened rubber locates and anchors itself in the groove of the TYTON pipe socket. The rubber ring also has a sealing bulb of softer rubber firmly bonded to the heel. This achieves the required seal against the inserted pipe spigot. This tried and proven jointing system has been used worldwide for more than

ZINC COATING DUCTILE IRON

TYTONXTREME combines the best features of TYTON ductile iron pipe systems with materials that provide superior resistance to chemical attack and abrasion

Now designers, installers and operators can have confidence, not only in the proven mechanical strength of ductile iron, but in its enhanced ability to resist internal attack from aggressive fluids such as sewage and industrial waste.

This is achieved by using calcium aluminate cement (CAC) in lieu of sulfate resisting (SR) cement in the barrel lining. This is complemented by the application of 200g/m2 of metallic zinc and finished with Synthetic Resin coating. Epoxy paint is applied to inner sockets and spigots which are exposed to covenants. CAC is an effective lining for agressive fluids with extreme pH values and/or abrasive solids.
