Lot: 8The original Thomas InchMiddleweight Dumbbellsweighing 144lb. and 153lb., fromthe original set of certainly fourpossibly five bells, the mostfamous of which was the 172lb.heavyweight "challengedumbbell", the set originallybelonging to Thomas Inch (1881-1963) the celebrated BritishStrong Man, and believed to datecirca 1897-1904 Thomas Inchwas born at Scarborough 27thDecember 1881. His name isperpetuated to this day in theworld of strength and bodybuilding by the Thomas Inchdumbbell. Inch claimed that inhis lifetime he never encounteredanybody who was able to lift the172lb. dumbbell above his head, and only one who was able toeven raise it off the floor. Inmodern times the surviving172lb. bell has never been taken'clean' above the shoulder, although Strongman BillKazmeier lifted it 'continental'style which allows for bodytouching on the upwardmovement to the shoulder. Mostof the historical information onThomas Inch and his dumbbellsis written in the "Strength"publications and newspapers ofthe day. These have beensummarised in later writings, some now published on the net,but for those with a seriousinterest in Inch it would beadvised to go back to the originalsource materials when drawingall conclusions. The mostfamous of Thomas Inch'sdumbells is his "challengedumbbell". This was the largestand weighed 172lb. Insubsequent times it has had afew owners including thebodybuilder Reg Park who sold itto the enthusiast Bert Lightfootwho, in turn, sold it to the Britishbodybuilder and weightlifterDavid Prowse, later famous as

being the actor who portrayedDarth Vader in the Star Warsfilms. Prowse then sold theChallenge bell to the Americancollector Kim Wood, the formerNFL strength coach at theCincinnati Bengals. There is avideo on 'You Tube' of ThomasInch lifting what he calls his"famous challenge dumbbell" andanother smaller example to setan overall weight lifting record. However, it is far from certainwhat he is actually lifting on theoccasion of this publicity film. Thedumbbells in the video are of adifferent style of manufacture tothe celebrated Inch bells withthreaded handles and removablehollow cast iron globes. TheThomas Inch MiddleweightDumbbells Thomas Inch isbelieved to have had certainlyfour probably five different thickhandle globe dumbbells. Themost famous and heaviest beingthe previous described 172lbs.bell. What are being offered herein the auction are the two'middleweight' dummbells, weighing 144lbs and 153lbs. There has been muchspeculation as to thewhereabouts of the middleweightbells in recent times. Theauctioneer can now reveal thatthey have been a privatecollection in west Wales. Thecollector acquired them from TomFenton who had beenbequeathed the dummbells byThomas Inch. Tom Fenton wasfrom the Cathays area of theWelsh capital Cardiff. He was astrength enthusiast who hadbeen a close friend of Inch formany years. When in possessionof the dumbbells Fenton set uphis own club, albeit it run from hishome. The bells were oftenloaned out for publicperformances by local athletesand at least three individualshave been recorded assuccessfully lifting themiddleweight bells at the time, namely Gerald "Strang" Davies,Hubert Thomas and Mike Brown. A careful analysis has beencarried out on the weight, dimensions and structure of thedumbbells on behalf of theauctioneer: The144lbs. dumbbellhas a 60.5mm diameter handle,100mm between globes, a 10mmhole at the centre of the handle. The handle is hollow with a wall

thickness of 3mm. It has a silvercoating that appears directlyapplied to the iron casting. The153lbs. dumbbell, also with directsilver coating, has a 59.5mmdiameter handle, 100mmbetween globes, 10mm hole inthe centre of the handle filled witha malleable substance, a smallsecond hole 10mm from oneglobe in line with the central hole, filled with a non ferrous metalsilver paint. It has beensuggested that Thomas Inchwould substitute the dumbbells atdifferent points in hisperformances, so it is no surpriseto see the presence of handleholes. The casting of thedumbbells is of exceptionalquality. Now with slight rusting, dust and a patina accumulatedover the years but with enoughsilver coating preserved to relaythe impression of howspectacular they must havelooked during Thomas Inch'soriginal performances.Estimate: £4,000.00 - £6,000.00
