ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Some of the themes in this paper were treated in a lecture to the British Society for the History of Mathematics on December 15th 1972, and I am grateful for the comments then received. For incisive criticisms of an earlier draft and pertinent sugges- tions, I am much indebted to Professor J. E. McGuire. I should also like to thank: an anonymous referee and the editor for many helpful comments; Dr. D. E. P. Jackson for making his thesis available to me and for many useful discussions; Dr. D. Bloor for drawing my attention to Aubrey's anecdote. A welcome oppor- tunity for much of the work on the paper was afforded by my tenure of an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Univ- ersity of Pittsburgh.
