Twin River 6th Graders Explore Colleges and Careers

You think students are too young to be exploring colleges and careers? Think again, the 6th students have spent the last several weeks with Mr Koziol, K-12 School Counselor focusing on career exploration and college readiness, and what it takes to get there. The students first took part in the Nebraska Career Connections Interest Inventory. This activity is based on the Nebraska Department of Career Model. Following the survey results, students are matched with their career field or fields: Health Care (Red), Ag/Natural Resources (Green), Skilled and Technical Sciences (Orange), Arts and Communications (Purple), Business, Marketing, and Management (Yellow), or Human Services (Blue). Some students were matched with up to 3 colors, a more broad interest, while others were matched with one or two colors, a more narrow interest. All students were given stickers based on their career field results. The 6th grade was also assigned an interview project. They were to interview an adult about their career, job duties, and education. They shared the interviews with their classmates, and were then asked what color would that person be based on the career model?

The last 2 weeks they have been exploring what it takes even as 6th graders to make college a reality. In sponsorship with EducationQuest, the 6th graders were each given a booklet titled "Look2College." Activities were given to the students with the main focus being, what can I do now to pre-pare for college? The answer being, being your best self by demonstrating good character, practicing good study skills and getting good grades, exploring interests, and investing in yourself by earning and saving money. Mr Koziol stated, "The students really enjoy

this activity. They seemed a little shy at first with the interviews, but after they hear what their classmates share, they really found an interest in it. This is a good thing to do with these kids, having goals for their future and working to achieve those goals."

Magician Has a Show at Twin River By: Jet-Lynn Worden

On Tuesday, February 7th the elementary classes had an assembly in the Twin River gymnasium. The assembly was sponsored by the great magician, Jeff Quinn. Quinn put on a neat little show about the history of Nebraska since it will be celebrating its 150 th birthday in March, and also incorporated his magic into it. Lots of students enjoyed buying magic packs and can now share magic with friends and family.

January Student of the Month By: Ezra Turpitt

For student of the month in January we had three nominees. The students nominated were chosen from the freshmen and sophomore classes. The nominees were Nathan Held, Irelynd Pearson, and Dalton Gembica. Nathan was nominated because he has made huge strides for coach Majerus in PE and wrestling. He is also more focused and works hard. Irelynd was nominated because she earned a silver medal at District FCCLA for their wonderful project on supporting teachers. She will go to state with her project. She also made finals at the Pierce speech invite (her first tournament ever) and she WON the Boone Central invite. She continues to be an excellent student and a great role model for younger students. Dalton was nominated because he has been a great student all year. He has improved his level of concern and his performance on his daily work and tests in the past few years. When he is absent, he gets his work done in a short amount of time and is a polite young man. He is a joy to have in class. The student of the month for January was Irelynd Pearson. Congratulations to Irelynd!

Students Attend a Puppet Show By: Jet-Lynn Worden

On Thursday, February 16th the Pre – Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes attended a puppet show in Fullerton. The name of the show was Kids on the Block and was sponsored by the Elks Club. The show taught the students that disabled kids are all special in their own way and are no different than everyone else besides of their limitations. It also taught that you should not treat any of them any different-ly. It was a great learning opportunity for the students and they all really enjoyed it.

Organizations

FFA Districts By: Austin Strain

On Wednesday, February 8th the Twin River FFA chapter traveled to Albion to attend the FFA District Proficiency Reviews and State Degree Interviews. The FFA chapter did very well! They completed proficiency applications based upon their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs. Every student in FFA is required to have an SAE project. This can be either an entrepreneurship or place-ment project, but most be related to agriculture. The applications require them to answer many questions about their projects as well as include information about skills learned, hours worked, and their income/expense. It takes a lot of time and effort to have a good project and put together a good application. The Gold State Qualifiers were Natalie Held in outdoor recreation, Trenton Kula in diversified ag production, Courtney Nelson in swine production entrepreneurship, Otto Mohr in beef production placement, Sara Czarnick in beef production placement, Kelsey Swantek in home and/or community development, andKate Mohr in veterinary science. The Gold winners were Sam Wyman which placed 4th and is next in line for state, and Mary Czarnick. The Silver winners were Nina Parry, Shayla Czarnick, and Kelsey Swantek. Lastly, the Bronze winners were Andrew Nelson, Dalton Gembica, Madison Ternus, and Blaine Jacobi.

Titan JV Finishes the Season Undefeated at 19-0 By: Ezra Turpitt

The Twin River Girls Junior Varsity team capped off a remarkable year by defeating the Humphrey - Lindsay Holy Family Bulldogs 46-35. The Titans got off to a quick start leading 9-1 after the first quarter. The Titans increased their lead to nearly twenty points in the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs mounted a comeback, cutting the lead to ten. The Titans, however, held on in the fourth quarter for the victory. Leading the way for the Titans was Halle Konz with nineteen points in just two quarters, and Erin Cook added twelve points. Coach Dan Koziol gave credit to the teams hard-work all season long, "What a fantastic year, to my knowledge this is the first time any team has went undefeated on the year in Twin River history, and this group is very deserving of this accomplishment. Once we beat Scotus in the Holiday Tournament, I knew this team was capable of more. They make each other better in practice and help our seniors to improve as well. They withstood the battles throughout the year and persevered to finish 19-0." The girls learned a lot about the sport and each other and hopefully they continue their undefeated streak into next season.

Sergey Takes Down State By: Ezra Turpitt and Coach Majerus

On Friday, February 17th and Saturday the 18th Sergey Parry represented the Titans at the state wrestling tournament in Omaha. This was his second year wrestling in the tournament. Sergey Parry is a great athlete and has started a lot for the Twin River wrestling program. He will be greatly missed and represented Twin River Public Schools well. Watching him develop over four years has been a great ride. As a coach it is hard to see an athlete strive for perfection and "do what it takes" to reach our goals and fall short. It was unfortunate that Sergey happened to get Knee Bursitis and his knee decides to blow up a week before districts and put a tamper on our goals and training. In wrestling it is almost impossible to maintain wrestling shape without actually wrestling. I truly believe Sergey was on track to medal at state this year and I would have loved to watch that tournament play out a few more times, but unfortunately Sergey is a senior and that is not possible. Sergey is a champion in my book and I hope all Twin River athletes model his work-ethic and drive in their goals and dreams. Sergey went 1-2 at the 2016-2017 State Championship for the second year in a row. His two losses were to Abe Hernandez of Mitchell (2-time Runner up) and Dalton Mueller of North Bend (5th place finisher). Sergey finishes the season 37-12 and is Twin Rivers first ever 2x State Qualifier. Congratulations to Sergey Parry!!!

TR Girls Go Undefeated With a Win Against Central City By: Ezra Turpitt

The Titans were too much to handle for the Central City Bison on Tuesday, February 7th at home. Eleven players cracked the scoring column as the Titans won 51-31. Coach Koziol stated, “I am very pleased with the effort by the girls, we haven’t had a JV game for a while due to the conference tournament. They came out and execut-ed at a high level. Central City beat us in a close one last year, so it was nice to overcome that loss.” The leading scorers for the Titans were Halle Konz with thirteen points, Gabi Wieck with ten points, and Cali Shanle with six points. The 7A team lost 45-25 with Mason Tenski scoring seventeen, followed by Beau Zoucha and Caleb Cornwell with three each, and Kadren Miller putting in two. The Titans were at a height disad-vantage with some of the Boone Central players, but took care of the ball by improving their passing skills. This enabled them to take better shots throughout the game. The 7th grade Titans traveled to Madison on January 23 and came home with their first win. The Titans defeated the Dragons 24-22. Mason Tenski led the Titans with eleven points, Beau Zoucha had six, Haden Czarnick four, Jackson Strain two, and Caleb Cornwell with one point. The Titans trailed at halftime by four. They stayed close to the Dragons and took the lead in the last couple minutes of the fourth quarter to win the game. On January 26, the Titans met up with the Bison of Central City. The 7B team had a nice win with a score of 25-7. Caleb Cornwell led the Titans with five points, followed by Dominic Schwalm and Kahlin Blaser with four each, and scoring two points were Logan Reeg, Colton Rupp, Jackson Strain, Jed Jones and Haden Czarnick. High scorer for the Titans was Mason Tenski with fifteen points, followed by Caleb Cornwell and Haden Czarnick with seven, and Beau Zoucha with five points. Height again posed some problems for the 7A team, but the boys continued to work hard and improve. The Titans were on the road again on January 30, traveling west to play Fullerton. The Titans came out after halftime and did a nice job of pressuring the Monarchs, outscoring them by two points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap to win. “Overall, the boys had a successful season as they worked hard to get better, both offensively and defensively,” said Coach Hebda.
