1398 Friday 14 December 2018

Dear Members of the Loyola College Community,

This is the final newsletter for the school year and there are many interesting events to share with the College community. This year has ended on a very positive note for all the remaining year levels with Masses and celebratory events. The final week for staff has been very busy with finalising Semester Reports, planning meetings for 2019 and the induction of new staff.

Twilight Market and Carols Night Despite the inclement weather, the Twilight Market held in Companions Hall was well patronised this year as was our tenth Carols night held in MPAC attended by families and staff on Sunday 2 December. The interior of the Inigo Theatre was beautifully lit up for the occasion and a special visit from Santa added to the spirit of the evening. I extend my thanks to Mr Williamson, our Director of Music and to the all the music staff together with the students who performed as well as to Mr O’Keeffe, Head of Performing Arts who was our Master of Ceremonies for the evening. As has been the custom over a number of years now the Old Loyola tower was lit up with a beautiful Christmas lights display which will be visible every evening from 9pm. I thank Mrs Alonso, Community Liaison and the LPFA for organising the Market stalls. Congratulations to all involved in these two wonderful events.

Annual Awards Evening This was held on Friday 7 December in the Loyola Companions Hall and was another successful evening attended by over 800 guests comprising staff, students and their families. Our special guest this year was past student, Mr Nikolaas Kostraby (L: 09-10). I thank Mrs Devlin, Director of Communications & Events for overseeing the organisation of the evening. I congratulate the recipients of all awards and in particular the recipients of the following four very important awards presented on the evening:

Insignis Medal 2018 This is the highest award a Loyola student can receive and is presented annually to a Year 12 student. The medal is awarded to a student whom St Ignatius would have happily had as one of his companions. This year we congratulate Maria Quadrino on being the recipient of the Insignis Medal.

College Medals 2018 St Ignatius Medal

This medal is awarded to a current or former student who has given service in a pastoral or leadership capacity and has shown loyalty and commitment to the College throughout his/her time as a student.

This year’s recipient is Debra Bland.

JACSA Student Leadership Conference Loyola hosted this annual three-day event for Year 12 student leaders elected for 2019. The conference was held from 9 – 11 December at the College and was attended by student leaders and staff from nine of the ten schools around Australia which share the Ignatian charism. I thank Mr Lynch, Deputy Principal Ignatian Mission and Identity for overseeing the organisation of this event. Students gathered to consider what it means to be a leader in an Ignatian school and to learn about the many similarities that exist amongst JACSA schools across the country as well as to learn about Jesuit education. On the opening night the students and staff attended Mass in the St Ignatius Chapel followed by dinner in the Function room. I thank Fr Gerry Healy SJ for celebrating Mass for us on the night and I thank Mrs Pritchard, our Canteen Manager for preparing and serving dinner.

College Advisory Board In late November the College Advisory Board held its first meeting with new members who will join for 2019. I wish to thank Mrs Helen Jowett, the outgoing chairperson of the College Board for her six years of service, four years as chairperson. Helen has been a very loyal member of the College and has provided great support in her time on the Board both as a member and as Chair person. I thank Helen for her outstanding service and wish her every blessing for the future. I also thank Mr Kieren Prowse and Mrs Raelene Herlihy who conclude their time on the Board and wish them well for the future. We welcome three new Board Members, Mrs Miriam Stylli as Staff representative, Mr Paul De Marchi (St Francis of Assisi Parish rep) and Mrs Fiona Bezkorowajnij (St Mary’s Parish rep).

I congratulate Ms Donna McMahon (St Thomas the Apostle Parish rep) who was elected as the new Board Chairperson from 2019. I take this opportunity of thanking all the Board members for their support of the College in 2018.

VCE/VCAL Results of the Class of 2018 At the time of writing this year’s Year 12 results had not as yet been published. A full report will be given in the first newsletter of 2019. We wish all our students the best of luck when the results are announced.

Staffing Matters At this time of the year we farewell staff who are leaving the College. We thank them for their contribution to the life of Loyola and wish them well for the future.

Our best wishes and thanks go to staff leaving the College.

The following staff will complete contract positions: Linda D’Astolto, Vinita Seago and Philip Ryan

The following staff will be resigning from the College: Mrs Forytarz (L: 88) and Mr Schrader (L: 05). I wish to pay tribute to both these staff members who have served the College community for a considerable number of years and who will be retiring from teaching at the end of this year. I thank them both for their loyalty to our students and families, for their contribution to College life during their time on staff and for their support of our community. May God continue to bless them into the future.

Page 3: Twilight Market and Carols Night - Loyola College, Melbourne

We also farewell: Michael Burke (L: 18) Emily Grills (L: 11) Leo Hong (L: 12) Andrew Kingham (L: 17) Susan Maher (L: 17) Stephen McCarthy (L: 08) Kieren Prowse (L: 13)

We wish them well as they move to other schools or pursue other interests.

We also farewell and thank our Language Assistants: Mathilde Callari and Cristina Tomasin

A full list of new staff will appear in the first Ignatian in 2019.

I take this opportunity of thanking all the College staff for their dedication and hard work this year in supporting our students and families. Meeting the educational needs of our students is an ongoing challenge for all of us and for those who work in Catholic schools it is a vocation of service. I greatly appreciate and value the support that the whole College Leadership team has given me in leading the Loyola Community.

Christmas Greetings As this year draws to a close, I wish to thank all who have contributed to its success. The year has again passed amazingly quickly and Christmas celebrations are beginning. This year we have reflected on the theme “Walking with Others” We have seen many examples of the living out of this theme through the actions of many members of our College community who have shared their many gifts and talents with us in the service of our community.

As we move towards the feast of Christmas let us take the time in this Advent season to prepare ourselves for the celebration of the Saviours’ birth reflecting on what that means for us in today’s world.

In this season of gift giving I conclude with the following Christmas Prayer (Author unknown).

We bring You our gifts Lord, we bring You our gifts, Not of gold, frankincense and myrrh, but of hearts that rejoice in the wonder of your birth.

We bring You praise, for You, who existed before time began came lowly among us as a man.

We pay You homage, for You, who shared the Father’s glory came humbly to join in our human story.

We give You thanks, for You, through who all things came to be, chose by your cross to set us free.

I wish all a happy, safe and blessed Christmas and look forward to having a wonderful New Year with the Loyola community in 2019.

Page 5: Twilight Market and Carols Night - Loyola College, Melbourne

This week, four of Loyola’s 2019 College committee participated in the tenth Australia wide conference for student leaders of Jesuit and Ignatian network schools from around Australia. Loyola hosted the event. The schools are:

Queensland Xavier High School, Hervey Bay.

New South Wales St Ignatius’ College, Riverview St Aloysius’ College, Milsons Point Xavier Catholic College, Ballina

Victoria Loyola College, Watsonia St Ignatius College, Geelong Xavier College, Kew

South Australia St Ignatius College, Athelstone

Western Australia John XXIII College, Perth

Activities included speakers from Province, Jesuit Social Services and the Cardoner Project. This gave the students a greater understanding of extent of the works of the Jesuits and their partners in Australia. Students really enjoyed meeting with their peers from other schools, sharing stories and ideas and building relationships.

It wasn’t all work. The group also enjoyed a visit to the National Sports Museum and Federation Square and a ride on a city tram followed by dinner at Lentil as Anything in Abbotsford convent. They also saw kangaroos in Greswell forest.

The leaders really valued exploring their common Ignatian charism and developing strategies to enable the spirit of Ignatius to come alive for students in their schools.

Our College theme for next year is Companions in the spirit of Ignatius and fittingly, this was also the theme of the conference.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (STUDENTS)

As we come to a close of the 2018 academic year, I wish to thank all our students for their work and commitment to their studies and to the co curriculum program. In speaking with the students at their final assemblies, they were encouraged to reflect upon the year in determining what worked best for them and what areas still required improvement. In doing so I suggested that they read the teacher’s comments on their final report and to use these as their goals for 2019.

I concluded by stressing the importance of being positive role

models for other students and supporting one another as members of the College community.

During the break, families will receive communication from me in relation to the newly developed mobile phone policy, which all students were alerted to at their final assembly last week, as well as information relating to key dates for the commencement of 2019 and general student expectations.

Finally, to the parents/guardians, I wish to thank you all for your ongoing support of the College. I wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas and look forward to working with you in 2019.

Staff new to the Head of House roles As you may be aware both Mr Prowse and Mr McCarthy are leaving the College community to take up positions elsewhere. We are grateful to them for their service to the College, and especially for their dedication and commitment to their House staff, students and parent/guardians. We wish them well in their new appointments.

Replacing Mr Prowse as Head of Mannix will be Ms Swift, and Mr McCarthy will be replaced by Ms Bifano, as Head of Mackillop.

College Student Leaders 2019 Leadership is an important part of College life, and I wish to thank and congratulate all our students for taking the time and having the courage to put themselves forward as a nominee for one or more of the various leadership roles. It was a pleasure to meet with these students and to listen to their ideas about how they would contribute to College life as a leader with a ‘formal’ leadership role. While not everyone can be successful in attaining a formal leadership role, it was encouraging to see so many students willing to consider leadership roles at the College.

It is with pleasure that I congratulate the following students for their leadership roles in 2019.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (TEACHING AND LEARNING)

2018 certainly has been a very exciting year for our students and as we approach Christmas, it is worth reflecting on our year. Parents and guardians will receive their reports in the next few weeks and it is important to celebrate the successes, the challenges and ways to improve in 2019.

I would like to thank the teaching and support staff for all their work over the year. We have a great team at Loyola and continue to work for the benefit of our students. I would also like to thank the parent community for their ongoing support of their child, and support for the College.

I wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas and we look forward to working with you in 2019.

Year 10 - 12 Orientation work at home Our students in Year 10 -12 2019 have completed their Orientation program. In class, every subject teacher would have gone over the expectations for learning and what is needed to be have a successful 2019.

To make the most of this learning opportunity; students have been assigned Orientation work to be completed at home over the break. The amount in each subject area will vary but as general rule the following can help. 2019 Year 12 students – 1.5 days per subject 2019 Year 11 students – 1 day per subject 2019 Year 10 students – this will vary

Students do have work to complete with staff being specific in their directions on what needs to be completed. An example of some of the work requirements are listed below.

This is only a snapshot of expected work to be completed. Year 12 English – novel and short stories read Year 11 English – novel read Mathematical Methods – completion of work

booklets, reference organization Visual Arts subjects – practical and theory work

FROM ICT MANAGER

ICT News - Setting up cyber safety controls at home Thinking about using how you might be able to monitor/control your child’s use of their computer or mobile phone?

Unfortunately, there is no fail-safe solution on the market. As stated in previous Ignatian Newsletter ICT News articles on this subject, the best cyber safety strategy is for parents/guardians to be involved in their child’s online activities, keep communication lines open and never allow children to be alone with their devices in their bedrooms behind closed doors.

Loyola College does not endorse specific cyber safety technologies for home use; however, three products I recently saw demonstrated may be of interest to parents/guardians:

Apple Screen Time (with iOS 12): https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT208982

Family Zone for parents: https://www.familyzone.com/us/how-it-works

Circle with Disney with Wi Fi parental controls: https://cybersafehouse.com/

Digital devices for Years 10 – 12 students Year 10 to 12 students are required to bring an approved digital device (Choose Your Own Device, CYOD) from the following list:

Windows Notebook Device Windows 7 or later Core i3 Processor or greater Minimum 4Gb Memory (RAM) Wireless Network Card with AC (5Ghz)

Windows Tablet Windows Surface Pro (not RT) or Equivalent 5Ghz Network Adapter Minimum 4Gb Memory (RAM)

Apple Macbook Pro or Macbook Air (not recommended for Visual Arts students) Apple OSX Mavericks or later Core i3 Processor or greater Minimum 4Gb Memory (RAM) 2013 model or later

Apple iPad (not recommended for Visual Arts students) Apple iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2 Apple iPad Pro Minimum 32 Gb storage

Note that Android devices are not supported on the College’s ICT infrastructure.

Recommendations for CYOD Anti-Virus: This should be installed and

kept up to date.

Warranty/Care: It is highly recommended

that the device is maintained under warranty and that consideration is also given to protecting the device from physical damage.

Support: Please bear in mind that as the device is parent owned, Loyola College is not responsible for diagnosing hardware issues with the device, repairing the device or replacing the device should it be lost or destroyed.

LPFA Twilight Market – A big thank you to all A beautiful market was created with over 40 stall holders both inside and on the basketball courts. So many amazing goods which included – art sculpture, jewellery, candles, Christmas decorations, homemade baking, soaps, food trucks and so many more.

A big thank you to John Tran, Sr Neila and so many students who worked very hard in providing great Christmas entertainment – the jumping castles and karaoke were enjoyed by many and the many children’s activities created a fun environment.

A special Fr Christmas photo booth was set up and lots of fun was had when a Community Police Officer did a mock arrest of our own Loyola Father Christmas.

I would like to thank so many people, who without their assistance the success of the event would not have been possible. A special thank you to Mark Leary, his great MC skills increased raffle sales and made many door prize winners very happy.

Homestays needed for 2019 – French/Italian Exchange Students After a very successful program in 2018, I have already received enquiries from both Lycée Saint Joseph, Avignon in France and Liceo Malpighi, Bologna in Italy who would like to send students (aged 16-18 years old) for Term 3, 2019. They would arrive during the July term break. There will be both male and female students and all attempts will be made to match students regarding age and preferred gender. The students would enrol into either Year 10 or Year 11. The students would like to see how life is in a typical Australian school and family. The main purpose of the Exchange Programme is for the students to improve their English skills.

Accommodation expenses of $280.00 per week are paid to the Homestay family. The students will be here for a 10 week stay. Loyola College will provide uniform for the visiting students.

If you have any questions or if you are interested in being a Homestay family, please contact me via email or phone call.

Loyola College Online Second-hand Book Sale Loyola College will be providing an online second-hand Textbook Trade System which is organised by the Sustainable School Shop.

This service enhances the sense of school community as the transaction is parent to parent, each helping the other in a non-competitive environment.

The school’s book lists are loaded into the system to make the Ad listing process easy, fast and accurate. The Ad Matching service shows you: Exactly the right items to buy Who has the most items you need The cheapest items

The cost to sell or buy one item is $1.50, or you may choose an annual fee of $21.95 which would allow you to buy and sell an unlimited number of items.

To access the online service visit, www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au

Donation of Loyola Uniform If you have any Loyola uniform items that you no longer require, please leave them at Reception.

They are great to have for families in need, student accidents and our Exchange students.
