GRADE 5/6 inaugural MOVIE NIGHT fundraiser

What a night!! Last Friday night, the grade 5/6 classroom was transformed into Whitehorse

Cinemas.

The night was a huge success with 200 students attending both movie sessions. Many

students turned up in their PJs and brought along some very comfy pillows and bean bags.

Once the patrons got comfy, they watched their movie while munching away on lollies,

popcorn and chips. Once the movies were over, and just before the parents arrived, the

patrons wiggled away to the Hokey Pokey, Chicken Dance and One Direction.

A big THANK YOU to the Grade 5 and 6 students who helped on the night - Alanna, Anjana,

Ashley, Ella, Kiara, Melissa, Tamara Braydon and Cayne.

The monies raised will go a long way to help with the payments of the last Grade 6

excursion, to Funfields, and the Grade 6 rugby tops for 2014.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED SUPPORT THE GRADE 5/6S!!

Make sure you book your seat at next year’s movie night!!

McDONALD’S HOOP TIME

JUNIOR ROUND ROBIN DAY On Wednesday 21st August, some Grade 3 and 4 students participated in the extra curricula activity of basketball, namely the McDonalds Junior Hoop Time Round Robin. We had 2 teams entered – one in Rookies and one in Future Stars. The Future Stars played 5 games while the Rookies played 4 games, throughout the day. Each game was a roller coaster of emotions with many up and down moments and lots of ohhhhs and ahhhhs. All players kept positive and looked forward to playing as a team and having fun. A VERY big thank you to the coaches, Jayden Holloway and Carla Frigo. Both grade 6 students trained the teams throughout the year and got the teams ready for the day. A day like this cannot be possible without the fantastic assistance of parents as well. A HUGE THANK YOU to Franca Lionetti, Trudi Hattwell, Kylie McCall Sheena Xi, Gabrielle Hashmonai, Kirra and Rohan Lewis for helping with driving the players to and from the stadium. It was wonderful to see other parents and grandparents come along to see the teams play, as well. Well done to both teams and hope to see you about the basketball stadiums playing basketball! Showcase dinners

4/5/6 During August the kitchen has been a hive of activity! Children in 4/5 and 5/6 have been showcasing their culinary and waiting skills whilst preparing and serving a 3 course meal to their families. It was lovely to feel the excitement from families in the restaurant, and hear their delight from eating delicious Asian cuisine prepared by the children. The diners were even surprised with watching an energetic “Kungfu” dance before dessert!

A big thank you to all families that supported our dinner. Thanks also to our Kitchen Specialist Deb and her helpers Philip and Eve. Their guidance ensured a smooth and calm kitchen on the night.

Next week marks the start of the Indian inspired 3/4 showcase extravaganzas!

100 day celebrations

We were very busy down in the Prep area when we celebrated

100 days at school. Our visitors, including grandparents, uncles

and aunties, cousins, mums and dads enjoyed watching the

Preps being presented with their certificates and eating a very

delicious afternoon tea.

It was really a lovely time with our whole prep community!

The preps had spent the day participating in many “100”

activities including making 100 day crowns, paper chains

counting higher than 100 and biscuits with “100” on the top!

FATHERS As Father’s Day approaches it’s worth thinking how good fathering matters. It matters to mothers as a supportive father makes a mother’s life easier. It matters to girls. Good fathering has been linked to higher confidence levels in girls, particularly during the tricky adolescent years. The notion of a father who is present, available and attentive affords a sense of security to a girl, which is necessary for healthy development. Dads are also the first introduction to the world of men for girls so it’s important that fathers treat their daughters with gentleness and respect, but also encourage them to be assertive. In a sense, fathers teach their daughters how they should expect to be treated by males as they get older. Good fathering matters to boys. They learn their first lessons of manhood from their dads. Early primary-aged boys usually want to spend a great deal of time with their dads. Steve Biddulph, author of Raising Boys, describes this phenomenon as ‘father-hunger’ and suggests that dads need to be around their sons in the primary school years so they can ‘download the software’ of how to be male. The father-son relationship during adolescence can be problematic. While teen boys seem to be hard-wired to challenge their fathers, most desperately want their dads to be proud of them. Teen boys need a dad who can be firm when needed as they don’t always make great decisions. They need a dad who remembers the awkwardness and insecurity of being a teenage boy themselves. And they relate best to dads who don’t take themselves too seriously. The judicious use of humour, particularly with boys, is a great fathering strategy. And it matters to men. And, of course, involved fathering matters to men. Most health scales state a healthy relationship with their children is a predictor of good health and longevity for men, as well as of life satisfaction levels. I suspect there is something relaxing and de-stressing for a man to get into a child’s space and time. There is a big kid in most men just busting to get out. This Father’s Day give yourself a pat on the back for being present in your child’s life. You might even want to think how you can be a better dad over the next 12 months. Here are five fathering tips (whether you live with the children’s mother or not) to help you in that process:

1.Go on dates with your daughters. (VIP Saturday presenter Bruce Sullivan taught me this one.) 2. Have adventures with your sons. (VIP Saturday presenter Bruce Sullivan taught me this one too.) 3. Support your partner’s parenting. 4. Change as your child changes. 5. Discipline with firmness and compassion.
