Cherished Casters and Chasers of the Currents,For a little over 3 years and 3 months now I’ve been writing the Presidents’ message and I was looking forward to this last letter to our membership but the more I contemplate the message, the harder the task becomes. Just what does one say after so many terrific years of fishing among the best fly fishers in Texas, while standing knee deep in the water and waves witnessing some personal best fish being caught, all the while hearing the cherubic giggles from on-looking members cheering the fight on? I’ve also had the privilege of sliding in the mud and crashing to the bottom of rivers, some limestone, some sand and some just pure, smelly, gunky slime with some of the most graceful women on earth. Photographs of broken rods, mud-smeared faces, sun blistered smiles, sweat-ringed hats and buffs snugged up to their eyes are all permanently etched in the pages of my memories of TWFF. Early on, I realized the importance of mentoring women in fly fishing especially since the sport has typically been so male dominated. My personal goal was to focus on our newer members and help some of our novice anglers learn how to cast and fish. I’ve had the extreme honor of standing beside many of them when they caught their first fish on the fly. I’ve come to love the enthusiasm and excitement of that first catch! So many reminders of fishing with our group flood my memories; all which will be retrieved at later dates in my life. Surely, I will never be lonely in my old age at least if my memory holds up…and I’m counting that it will. If not, there is always our living scrapbook at the TWFF photo gallery at http://www.twff.net/gallery2/main.php, to refresh my adventures and love of fly fishing.

I worry that I am leaving office with far more than I have given the club. Yes, we’ve been very successful, met our club goals, our yearly donations, raised and saved money and we’ve mentored scores of women in the art of fly fishing but I leave

far richer with memories, with making lifetime friends, sharing heart aches and empathizing with members over their family dilemmas and their children’s growing pains, and the trials and tribulations of relationships and all the hilarious stories of youth and stupidity. I am walking away with a whole new family that shares my passion of fly fishing. How lucky am I?

I’ve also gotten to work with some very, very talented board members through the years and been supported by Lisa Bellar as our Newsletter Editor and gotten to work with the very gifted Sheila Setter, our Web Master and News Moderator, as our website has grown and been redesigned through the years. I am always delighted to hear positive input about our newsletter and our website. Both of those are our portals, which bring potential members to our club.

Also through the years, I’ve received ongoing emails from some of our members that no longer are able to fish with us but that still remain members and follow our activities and adventures through the newsletter and website. I’m always happy to know that we can still bring a smile to those faces that aren’t able to join us on the water.

As far as our Friends of TWFF, we couldn’t run this club without you. Your goods and services and donations make our club what it is today. Thank you all for your contributions and support of women in fly fishing.

So what’s left to say? Big thanks and many hugs to all our members that endured the fishless events as well as the wildly successful fish catching events, the extreme heat and freezing cold and the long and short drives to our outings. Our Mullet Mixers have been feasts and the group camaraderie has been unbeatable. Thanks for all the time volunteered to make our outings spectacular and to help our club raise money.

As I say bye and turn the club over to Pat Carlson, I wish she and her new board the best of luck and continued success. The club can only get better!

And for me…I still walk away thinking I got the best deal with my multitude of memories and my new extended fishing family!

See ya on the water!

Is there a nicer little place nestled in the rolling Texas hills, cloaked by blue skies than Camp Honey Creek in Hunt, TX?…probably not. The weather was great, as was the company! The fishing, not as good as our last trip there in 2010, but several nice bass and sunfish were caught, oh...and 1 crappie caught by Frances!

Several new members came to be part of our wonderful group and everyone enjoyed the surroundings of Camp Honey Creek. Our new members enjoyed some one-on-one casting lessons and were rewarded by catching their first fish on the fly. Mark Cole, physical therapist and member of the Fredericksburg Fly club was our speaker Saturday night. Mark’s gentle yet reinforcing demeanor in explaining how proper posture and exercise are essential to everything in our lives hit home for most of us. He not only had simple exercises but he also let us in on some everyday, inexpensive items to use for exercise equipment. Remember to stand up tall and shake that partially full water bottle to build up your casting arm.

We had a wonderful silent auction put together by our very own talented Cindy Organ, that was quite a success! We raised lots of money for TWFF, CFR and for our conservation project. Lots of us

went home with big smiles from the cool merchandise that we won.

A big thank you to all that turned out for this outing, the members are what makes this such a great group and the outings so much fun! Coordinators Vicki Andrews and Cindy Organ made sure everyone had a great time. There was another try at night fishing too. Those attending included: Mary Aigner, Kate Allen, Sheila Anderson, Vicki Andrews, Jessica Archer, Jan Bates, Annette Blythe, Pat and Don Carlson, Joyce Davis, Leslie DeHay, Frances Estes, Susan Gaetz and family, Carrie Helmcamp, Stormi Johnson, Mary Kain, Nancy Lappin, Judy Lunn, Sharon Leissner, Linda Love, Cindy Organ, Rozlynn Orr, Debbie Price, Kerri and Jim Stephenson

with guests Jill, Ken, Jenna and Brook Gura, Janice Togal, Debbie Williams, and Marilyn Young.

It is time again for our annual pilgrimage to beautiful Broken Bow Oklahoma. We continue to realize that trout only live in fabulous places, and this is the only trout outing scheduled in 2013, so please join TWFF on January 18 – 20, 2013, fishing for Brown and Rainbow Trout in the well-populated waters of the Lower Mountain Fork River. Our fishing will concentrate at Beavers Bend State Park which is approximately 200 miles northeast of Dallas in the extreme South East corner of Oklahoma. As this is Martin Luther King holiday weekend it is a great opportunity to spend an extra day or two.

Sheila Anderson has reserved the Centennial Lodge which was originally built by Jesse and Linda King of Three Rivers Fly Shop. The lodge is located just minutes from Beavers Bend in Southern Hills East. Take Hwy. 259A (south entrance to Beavers Bend across from the Fly Shop) for about 1.2 miles. Turn right into Southern Hills. After that, you will make three (3) left turns. The last turn will go into a dead-end road. Centennial Lodge will be on the right. See this link for pictures and details.http://www.threeriversflyshop.com/Centennial.htm

This lodge will serve as our “Headquarters” for this outing.

LODGINGOur activities will concentrate in Beaver’s Bend State Park. The park offers Cabins and full hook-up RV/Camping facilities at reasonable prices. Call,(580) 494-6300 for reservations. Tell them, that you are with TWFF and they will keep the group together. Be aware that there are some restrictions on alcohol in the park. The park restaurant has an excellent breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu.

Mullet Mixer, Friday, January 18th

Our Mixer will be held at the Centennial Lodge. Please bring a dish to share and your favorite beverages to the cabin around 6:30

p.m. Joining the TWFF Broken Bow outing again this year will be our speaker for the Mullet Mixer, Chris Johnson. Chris is the owner of Living Waters Fly Fishing, (512) 828-347, http://www.livingwatersflyfishing.com, a fly shop and guide service based in Round Rock, Texas.

Chris discovered the wonderful sport of fly fishing at a very young age. He learned the how to fly fish primarily through time spent on the water – fish are the best teachers in his opinion. One of the primary purposes of Chris’ fly shop is to be an education center to fly anglers of every skill level. Spreading the

passion of fly fishing to the next generation of anglers is one of Chris’s primary goals. Chris guides several Texas hill country rivers and also guides on the Lower Mountain Fork River in Oklahoma. Chris and his wife Emily live in Round Rock and enjoy fly fishing together whenever they get the chance to do so. Chris and Emily will be accompanied by Living Waters Fly Fishing’s new employee, Matt Bennett, and his wife Amanda. Together, they will be able to assist more TWFF members on the water and be able to teach multiple techniques from different viewpoints. Chris will discuss trout fishing the Lower Mountain Fork River covering locations, fly selection, techniques, and presentations.

Activities, Saturday, February 19th

For those of us wishing to move from “Fishing” to “Catching”, Chris, Emily, and Matt will conduct an on the water clinic. Sign-ups will be at the Friday Mixer. Similar Clinics held last year were very well received. The clinic will be from 9:00 to 12:00 and will cost $30 for those wishing to attend. Come ready to fish (and catch).

This is a clinic designed to teach participants all of the primary techniques needed to fish the Lower Mountain Fork River effectively. This is a basic course that will benefit beginner and advanced anglers alike. We will be covering the following topics:

• The Foundational Elements of Nymph and Dry fly fishing!• Presentations/Techniques -- On the water demos of casts, mends, and presentations.• Reading the Water -- How and Where to find trout in any stretch of water!• How and where to fish when the river is crowded.• Basic on stream entomology – find what hatch you need to match!• Fly Selection for the LMFR -- Find out what flies we use on the LMFR.• Wading Safety and Precautions -- How not to float your hat.• Playing/Landing Fish -- How to quickly and safely l and your catch.

The clinic will be taught on the water (Evening Hole Area) and each topic will be discussed as well as demonstrated. You will be taught the where, when, how, and whys of fly fishing for trout in this clinic. We are confident that you will leave the clinic with a very good trout fishing knowledge base and skill set.

7twff.net December, 2012

There will be ample time for questions and at anytime during the clinic you are welcomed and encouraged to interject with your questions.

Following the clinic, there will be ample time to fish with Chris, Emily, and Matt available to help.

Saturday night dinner will be at the Beavers Bend Park Restaurant at 6:30. They will close down for our private party and stay open late for us. They will offer a full menu. http://www.beaversbendrestaurant.net. Priscilla is quite anxious to support our group. The restaurant is open Fri. 2-8, Sat. 8-8, and Sun 8-2. Our business meeting will follow the dinner.

Then, more fishing on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday ….or as long as you like. Meals are on your own those days although last year we did have an impromptu Pizza party Sunday night.

About the Lower Mountain Fork River

The Lower Mountain Fork flows south out of Broken Bow Reservoir. This tailwater is the most noted year-round trout fishery in the state. Brown and rainbow trout are stocked regularly and may be found throughout the stream and its tributaries. The designated trout area includes a 12-mile reach of the

Lower Mountain Fork River extending from Broken Bow Dam down stream to U.S. Highway 70 bridge. About 5 Miles of this designated trout stream lies within Beavers Bend State Park, which offers excellent fishing access.

Spillway Creek is a tributary of the Lower Mountain Fork River that is a part of the designated trout area. When you hike along Spillway Creek you feel as if you are in a Rocky Mountain Stream. This 1 1/2 mile stretch is the first section of the 12 mile designated trout stream and is one of the most popular fishing areas on the river. Several of our members have enjoyed successful trout fishing in this area. Several fish habitat structures have been installed throughout this section of the stream to improve fishing quality and angler success. Trout are stocked near these strictures, providing excellent places for angler to begin their trout fishing adventures. Habitat structures include boulder clusters, rock weirs and veins and medium stage check dams. These improvement areas are being stocked with trout on a regular basis to make your fishing better. A state record 17 pound 4 ounce brown trout was caught in 2005 from Zone II of the Lower Mountain Fork River. Below Beavers Bend State Park there are public access points at the Regulation Dam and Presbyterian Falls as well as a fee access site located near the Highway 70 bridge. You will need map and good instructions to get to Presbyterian Falls. Both of these places are more difficult to fish than Spillway Creek. We do not recommend fishing Presbyterian Falls area due to the remoteness of the area. Always fish with a buddy if you visit this area.

Didymo, an aquatic nuisance species commonly referred to as “rock snot,” has been identified in the Lower Mountain Fork River. To prevent spreading this undesirable organism, please clean and dry waders and other fishing equipment after use in the Lower Mountain Fork River.

What to Bring

Waders, Long Johns, Wading Boots with Felt Bottoms or studded rubber soles, Wading Staff, and Net: The water is cold year round plus we are visiting in January so dress accordingly. It will most likely be cold so dress in layers so you can ‘shed’ some clothes as it warms during the day. You’ll need long johns or fleece undergarments, gloves, and a warm hat as well. The rocks are slippery and felt bottoms or rubber soles with studs are a must. Make sure you have a wading staff and USE IT! This is a great time of year for fishing so be sure and include a net for landing your monster. Waders and boots may be rented from the local fly shops.

Rod and line size: A 5-6 weight is normal for this river but you can also use 3-4 weight fly rod for a bit more action with smaller fish. Normal leader is a 9’ 5-6x with matching tippet. Shorter leader may be beneficial in lower water.

Streamers: Olive Wooly Bugger, with/without bead head size 8-10. All white and black/olive are also good. White or silver/white minnow style and white Zonker #6 long. Sheila Anderson’s olive Slayer has always been a winner.

9twff.net December, 2012

Nymphs: Prince, Pheasant Tail w/ or w/o bead (flash back OK too), Gold rib hares ear, Brassie, Copper John w/ or w/o legs, Red fox squirrel, are all working standards. All of these in size 14 – 18.

Midges: In red, pearl, black, # 20-22, Soft hackle in orange and olive are good colors.

Dry Fly: Parachute Adams #14-16, Caddis in tan or gray # 12-14, Blue Wing Olive # 18.

Attractors: San Juan worm in red, tan, or chartreuse # 14-16, Egg pattern in pink or orange (use both as an attractor on a double dropper rig) # 16 – 18.

2013 election results are in from our Election Judges and Independent Tabulators, Jessica Archer and Carrie Helmcamp.

TWFF welcomes to the executive board:President – Pat Carlson2nd VP of Membership – Nancy LappinSecretary – Joyce DavisTrustees – Vicki Andrews and Rozlynn Orr

As detailed in our Bylaws, TWFF elections are held on a yearly basis and positions consist of 2-year terms. These are staggered elections for the president,2nd vp, secretary and 2 trustees one year followed by elections for the 1st vp, treasurer and one trustee the next year. The staggered elections allow for continuity in leadership within our organization.

Please welcome our new board members and let them know you appreciate their contribution to the club. Being on the board is fun and rewarding andwe’ll be looking for new leaders again for 2013. If you enjoy the club, set a goal to serving on the board as a way to give back to the organization that you enjoy. We typically have 6 business meetings a year and most of the work and correspondence for the club is done via e-mail. We’ll need new ideas, thoughts, and designs to drive TWFF into the next decade.

We would like to thank our outgoing board members, Rozlynn Orr - President, Cindy Organ – retiring as 1st VP of Fund Raising, Kerri Stephenson - 2nd VP of Membership, Debbie Price – Secretary, and Annette Blythe and Frances Estes - Trustees for their time and dedication to TWFF. There is not enough time nor words to adequately thank everyone for their hard work and dedication. Rozlynn has just completed a 3 year term as president which enabled her to fish

with Texas’ best fly fishing family as the club grew and developed into a skilled and caring organization. Cindy is retiring after 2 years as our fundraiser. She has kept our auctions going and rounded up all sorts of fun merchandise, fly fishing paraphernalia and our very favorites, those guided trips! Kerri has kept TWFF membership in the growth mode for the past 4 years, serving 2 terms. Kerri’s personal notes and greetings to our new members have made our newbies feel welcome and right at home. Debbie has certainly done her share of helping the business meetings to run smoothly and recording our business minutes. She also has welcomed new members with her cheerful attitude. Annette has been a great sounding board and has brought much fly fishing wisdom and passion to our board. Frances has dedicated many hours of teaching casting lessons to our newer members and introducing them to the basics of fly fishing 101. Many of her students have gone on to catch fish at their first outing. All said, it doesn’t get much better than this!

Thank-you Rozlynn, Cindy, Kerri, Debbie, Annette, and Frances!

Fly Fish Texas March 9, 2013

Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center - Athens, Texas

March 9, 2013 - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At this all-day event, anglers from novice to expert will gather at Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center to celebrate the sport of fly-fishing. Learn the basics of fly-tying and casting, then fish for rainbow trout at the on-site ponds and streams. Attend seminars and demonstrations led by fly-fishing professionals. Visit with vendors of fly-fishing services and equipment.Fly-fishing clubs from across Texas will be on hand to help anyone who wants to learn or improve existing skills. Equipment will be provided for casting classes, but participants are welcome to bring their own gear. Courtesy TPWD

Fly Fish Texas is scheduled again for March 2013. We have been contacted by event coordinator, Walter McLendon to see if TWFF would be interested in doing a presentation about the different wa-ters that our club fishes. We could highlight 4 or 5 of our favorite locations and talk about the area and water and what we fish with. To do this, we will need about 4 or 5 members to give a short presenta-tion. This will be informal and it should prove to be some fun. It will also put us on the schedule and give our club some recognition.

Of course, we will also have our tables at the event entry where we sell flies to raise money for CFR. We will also need some volunteers to be at our club tables.

Please let me know if you are interested in giving a short presentation about the waters you know best and/or if you’d like to be part of our selling staff at our tables.

This is a great opportunity to promote TWFF and women in fly fishing! Yes, we do exist. We always need more warm water flies to sell at this event. So if you tie flies or can purchase extra flies for our club fly boxes, we’d greatly appreciate your support. Contact [email protected] to donate flies.

Let’s Make a Quilt—No Experience Necessary by Kay JacksonSince our last raffle quilt fetched a good amount of money, we thought we’d do it again! And this time, everyone can help… even if you don’t know how or want to sew! Everyone else can help by selecting and sending some fabric to be used in our quilt blocks and have a chance at winning the finished quilt.

We have a group of TWFF quilters who have volunteered their time to sew quilts blocks, and new member, Kay Jackson, has volunteered to coordinate this effort. If you sew and want to help, contact Kay ([email protected]) and you will be added to the sewing group.

Here’s how it works:

• Select fabrics of 100% cotton in light, medium

or dark tones. Fabrics could be traditional, contemporary, batiks or with even an outdoor/fish motif.

• It is important that the fabric is 100% cotton only! We need fabrics in light, medium or dark tones. We’d prefer fabric colors to be what you find in nature: greens, blues, brown/tan, golds. These fabrics can be purchased at local quilt stores, Joanne’s or Hobby Lobby.

• We only need one or two “fat quarters” per person. A fat quarter is essentially a quarter yard of fabric cut in a way that measures 18” x 22” (basically half cut of a half a yard of fabric). The person cutting your fabric should know how to cut it.

• Send your fat quarter(s) to Kay Jackson by February 7th, 2013. In turn, she is sending fat quarters to the sewing team to make the blocks. Kay’s address is 3820 Danbury Drive, Arlington, TX 76016.

• When you send in fat quarters, you will receive one quilt raffle ticket!

• Still want to help, but hate to shop? We’d love any amount of financial donations to help offset the cost of the batting and machine quilting.

It will be fun to see how many fabrics and colors we get. Mostly importantly, you have the opportunity to have a little piece of your heart in the quilt. Our plan is to auction the quilt in October 2013. If you have any questions, email or call Kay at 817-658-3004.

15twff.net December, 2012

As a club, we have met with financial success again this year and we were able to honor our club obligations and contribute to the bigger picture in life.

We have donated $975.00 to Casting for Recovery to send a woman that has or has had breast cancer to one of the Texas weekend retreats in 2013. We earn the majority of this money from sales of flies from our club fly boxes. We always need donations of flies to complete our mission, so if you tie flies or have friends that tie, try and solicit flies for our CFR fly boxes. Or if you find a good buy on flies, you can purchase an extra dozen or two for our club boxes. We always need flies!

Our club also makes a yearly Conservation Award of $250.00 to a promising organization or exemplary steward of our environment. The 2012 Conservation Committee, Joyce Davis and Frances Estes, recommended that we honor the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Inland Fisheries Management Program with our donation in 2012. This award was voted on and approved at our Camp Honey Creek outing. The Inland Fisheries Management Program is responsible for stocking fish in our Texas waters. Just think, the next fish you catch just might be a TWFF donation fish!

Thanks to all our members that helped us fulfill these donations and awards! Texas is a great state to fish; Let’s keep it that way!

Texas Council of International Federation of Fly Fishers Reprinted from the Southern Council Communications

As information to the members of the SOC that are not part of Texas I am passing along this letter to inform you of what is happening in your Council. The following letter was sent to the IFFF members living in Texas only:

International Federation of Fly Fishers 5237 US Highway 89 South Suite 11 Livingston, MT 59047 406-222-9369 (office) 406-222-5823 (fax) December 4, 2012 Dear (Member): On November 26, 2012, the International Federation of Fly Fishers approved the creation of a new Texas Council. Because you are a current or past member in the state of Texas we are sending you this letter. You may belong to an Affiliate club or a Charter club, or no club at all. Regardless of your affiliation the Council directs all activities in a specific geographic region. It's a very important part of the Federation structure. Texas is rich with fishing opportunities and potential conservation projects. The state offers both cold and warm water species as well as saltwater opportunities. We believe these attributes and the geographic expanse of Texas are conducive to starting a new council and provide an opportunity to grow the IFFF membership. Texas is currently split between two councils. Texas members either belong to the Southern Council or the Gulf Coast Council. We believe the state of Texas would benefit from a more centralized leadership. The change to a Texas Council will allow members to have an organizational structure that bests serves their state. Jim Schramm, IFFF legal counsel, is drafting the Texas by-laws, standard operating procedures and the process for selection of offices of the Texas Board of Directors. Please voice your opinion or volunteer for Council duties. E-mail your comments, suggestions or questions to Rhonda Sellers at [email protected]. She may also be reached by calling 406-222-9369 X101. If you would like to volunteer for any role, work as a member of the Board of Directors, or just be involved in something great, please contact Ralph Simmans at [email protected] or by calling 817-798-0061. Sincerely, Philip Greenlee President IFFF

Russell Husted President of the Fort Worth Fly Fishers

817-526-4981 NOTE: According to Rhonda Sellers of the IFFF, you may elect to remain in the Southern Council if you do not want to be moved to the Texas Council. The Texas Council should be established and functioning in the next several months. Should you prefer to remain in the SOC, call Rhonda around March to verify the assignment of your membership.
