Our daily morning weekday masses return to the

Church on Monday, September 4.

The Sunday night 5:00 pm mass will resume in the

Church on Sunday, September 10.

This Friday, September 8, we celebrate the Nativity of the

Blessed Mother. What does that mean? It is the birthday of the

Blessed Mother. The church always does things quite methodi-

cally, so, if you count back 9 months from this date, we see the

reason for the holy day December 8, the Feast of the Immacu-

late Conception, when Ann conceived Mary, free from original

sin.

The Parish Office will be closed on

Monday, September 4, 2017 in Observance of the Labor Day holiday.

We will reopen on Tuesday, September 5 at 8:00 am.

BAPTISM: Arrangements should be made one month in advance by calling Deacon Joe Wisneski at 973-635-4976. Parents are

expected to attend an instructional session with a Baptism Team. Baptisms are celebrated at 12:30 pm Sundays.

RCIA-RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: The R.C.I.A. invites non-baptized persons and those baptized into another

faith to participate in a faith journey in preparation for becoming a Catholic. If you are interested in any aspect of R.C.I.A., please

email Deb at [email protected] or call her at the parish office at ext. 23.

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: Congratulations! In order that we can together plan for your big day, couples should notify the

Church and begin to prepare at least one year in advance of the date. Please email Fr. Bob at [email protected] or call Fr. Bob at

the parish office ext. 22.

MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOME BOUND: If a family member or someone you know is recuperating from a hospital stay or is

homebound for any length of time and would like to receive Holy Communion, please let us know. It is a priority for the parish com-

munity to support and be present to those who cannot be with us for the celebration of the Eucharist. If you would like a priest or

deacon to visit a family member who is hospitalized, contact Peggy at [email protected] or call her at the parish office ext. 25.

SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Please call the parish office at 973-635-0625 to arrange for a priest.

FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST EUCHARIST: Children preparing to receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First

Eucharist begin preparation in first grade. To register, visit our website at www.st-pats.org.

You Did a Great Job

A young woman was being interviewed for an office position. “Do you have any special skills, talents, abilities?” she was asked. “Yes,” she said, “I’ve won prizes in several crossword puzzle contests and also several slogan-writing contests.” “That’s very good, but we need people who are smart at doing things during office hours,” said the interviewer. “That was during office hours,” the young woman replied.

Most jobs bring forth a bit of humor that relieves tension during busy times. Tomorrow, September 4 our country celebrates

Labor Day, which honors the American Labor movement and the contribution that workers have made to the prosperity of our nation. Labor Day invites all to ponder the tasks which are part of each day in that these endeavors provide pride, satisfaction, and joy to our lives; even if it is volunteer work for a charitable institution. One of the finest expressions any person can hear is that “they did a great job”. These words make a person feel appreciated for the time and effort involved to accomplish a goal.

The church reminds us of an important Christian principle in work, “people are more important than things”, and that work is

an expression of our dignity and creativity; however, these are not easy times in that cutbacks are frequent in most corporations and institutions as job security is minimal for so many. Even within the church cutbacks are visible as most Catholic parishes seek ways to decrease costs. This is also visible in Catholic Schools across our nation as many have closed or merged due to expenditures and lack of students. Forgotten in cutbacks are the people left without jobs that were once believed to be so secure. Work gives people a strong sense of identity. This makes it frightening to be unemployed during the prime years of life as careers, jobs, and tasks occupy a significant portion of the day; and, gives a person the opportunity to meet basic living needs such as housing, food, clothing, educa-tion, and health care. In my years of corporate life, work generated the opportunity to integrate myself with people of an assortment of backgrounds that broadened my outlook on religion, education, economics, culture, social justice and family life, which has assisted me in my ministry as a priest.

Although unemployment leaves a bitter taste in most people, it renders ample time to ponder new directions in life or even a

change in career; however, it often knocks the air out of some since it can instill the belief that an individual is no longer needed or of value to society. Determination and will power is necessary to search for new opportunities since it is easy for a person in this state of life to lose confidence. Unfortunately, some generate a path that leads to anger, anxiety, alcohol, gambling, self-doubt, envy, fear, and procrastination when unemployed. President Harry S. Truman once stated, “It’s recession when your neighbor loses his job, it is depression when you lose your own.”

Some attempt to “reinvent” themselves during these times as there are countless success stories of people who became

inspired due to their positive outlook on life such as Steve Jobs and his success with Apple, Dr. Seuss who had his first book rejected 27 times, and Barbara Corcoran who stars on the show Shark Tank. Barbara failed at 22 jobs prior to a successful venture in real estate. I even recall my own life where after ten successful years at IBM I decided to study for the priesthood. I felt extremely awk-ward letting go of a secure job and becoming unemployed, but “reinvention” led to newfound happiness.

As the country celebrates Labor Day, take time to see the importance in the “work” God calls you to each day. On a bad day

ponder the way your life would be without some specific chore, job, work, or activity. Coming to a job each day is not always easy, but it gives purpose to life and the opportunity to spread God’s love to co-workers, customers, clients, executives, commuters, volunteers, or even competitors. Hopefully someone says to you, “You did a great job.”

In Christ’s love, Fr. Bob

Social Justice Ministry

Pray for Peace and Racial Justice in Our Communities

September 9

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Sec-

ond Vatican Council, racism and every form of discrimination

based on “sex, race, color, social conditions, language, or reli-

gion must be curbed and eradicated as incompatible with God’s

design” (Catechism, par. 1935 and Gaudium et Spes, no. 29).

We must work to protect the dignity of all members of our one

human family by confronting racism in all its forms and and by

welcoming and celebrating the diversity of the many faces of the

children of God in our communities. Visit the U.S. Catholic bish-

ops’ page on racism to learn how the Church is praying, teach-

ing, and acting against racism, and how you can get involved on

Sept. 9 (the annual Day of Prayer for Peace in our Communi-

ties), and beyond.
