It was one of various prophecies about how the Messiah would save God's people: through suffering. In other words, God was preparing his Chosen people to recognize the promised Messiah by "affliction" and by "being crushed in iniquity." These are direct allusions to the passion, crucifixion, and death of our Lord Jesus Christ – 600 years ahead of time. And it was precisely through those sufferings that Jesus would take all of our sins upon himself, atone for them, and re-open the gates of heaven for us. The Apostles, as we heard in today's Gospel, hadn't studied the prophecies of Isaiah closely enough. Their idea of the Messiah was a powerful political and military leader who would make Israel back into a player on the international scene. And so, James and John, looking forward to that day, try to reserve their spots in the King's cabinet. Jesus has to remind them that his Kingdom is about sacrifice and service, not power politics and self-indulgence. But we can ask ourselves, why didn't Jesus attain our salvation by power-politics? Why did God arrange things so that we receive salvation through the cross? Today's Psalm gives us the answer: "Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you." Trust: that is the foundation stone of salvation. Original sin, which broke down mankind's relationship with God, was a failure of trust. And he did that by suffering and dying on the cross, proving once and for all that nothing we can do, no matter how terrible and evil it may be, will turn away his love. In my study of theology I did some work on John Henry Newman, now Blessed on the road to sainthood. He left the Anglican Church to join the Catholic Church leading the Oxford Movement over 150 years ago. Sometimes it's hard for us to trust in God because we can't see where he is leading us. But Christ's sufferings are our insurance policy: wherever he leads us, he will never abandon us. Cardinal John Henry Newman wrote a powerful prayer that captures this childlike confidence in God: “Lord, you have created me to do you some definite service; you have committed some work to me which you have not committed to another. I have my mission-I never may know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. Somehow I am necessary for your purposes, as necessary in my place as an Archangel in his .If, indeed, I fail, you can raise another, as you could make the stones children of Abraham. Yet I have a part in this great work. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. You have not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do your work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it, if I do but your commandments and serve you in my calling. Therefore, I will trust you. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve you; in perplexity, my perplexity may serve you; if I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve you. My sickness, or perplexity, or sorrow may be necessary causes of some great end, which is quite beyond me. You do nothing in vain; you may prolong my life, you may shorten it; you know what you are about. You may take away my friends, you may throw me among strangers, you may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink; hide the future from me-still you know what you are about.” May God Bless You, Fr. If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God’s love and mercy?

If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from “I want

more” to “thank you God for everything you have given me, I have

enough to share”. This change in perspective will bring you joy through

service to others.

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners,

Isaiah wrote the prophecy of the First Reading 600 years before the birth of Christ. It was one of various prophecies about how the Messiah would save God's people: through suffering. In other words, God was preparing his Chosen people to recognize the promised Messiah by "affliction" and by "being crushed in iniquity."

No me has creado en vano.

WORLD MISSION / PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28th PLEASE BE GENEROUS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

“Enable the missionary heart of Christian communities to join in prayer, testimony of life and communion of goods, in responding to the vast and pressing needs of evangelization” – Pope Francis

OCT. 28th - CELEBRATE PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY! - This

is the day set aside this year to celebrate and extend our thanks and prayers to our priests who serve St. Jerome community in so many ways. We invite you to give our priests a prayer, A Mass, a Holy Hour, a Rosary, a spiritual bouquet, a simple note or a smile to assure them of our loving care and gratitude for their presence in our lives will go a long way to serve the greater good of our wonderful and growing St. Jerome Catholic Church. The reasons for this celebration should be obvious. The number of priests per Catholic has declined over the past 40 years. This makes it more difficult for individual parishioners to establish a close relationship with any one particular priest. PLEASE PRAY FOR VOCATIONS AND FOR ALL PRIESTS! Let’s celebrate this special day, in praying for our priests, in praising God for their courage and their generosity. Let’s show our appreciation for Fr. Dan, Fr. Mike and Fr. David.

Join the St. Jerome Community on Friday and Saturday, 10/26 & 10/27, at Barnes & Nobles Town & Country location for the annual book fair! Student performances on Friday at 7pm. Prayer for Victims of Pornography

Father God, I come to you in the name of Jesus and I repent of this sin and I ask that the Precious Blood of Jesus would cleanse my mind and my heart from the images that have been imprinted there. I pray that you would renew my mind with images of Jesus on the cross dying for my sins. Renew my mind with your Word according to Romans 12:1-2, Lead me Oh Lord to the scriptures that would continue my minds renewal process. Free me from the bondage Oh Holy Spirit, forgive me for having so many time offended you. You have said that no Temptation has laid hold of us, that is not common to man and that you would not allow us to be tempted beyond a point where we cannot escape. I pray that you would show me the way out; show me the traps and roads that the enemy has laid before me so that I may choose another which leads me to you, Oh Lord. THIS IN JESUS NAME WE PRAY. Sponsored by The Catholic Daughters – Court Ave Maria #2001. Ribbons will be passed out at all 5:30 PM, 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM Masses of October 27th & 28th.

ESCUELA CATOLICA SAN JERONIMO
