Making Sense of the Cross Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On the top of the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica stands a gigantic statue of Christ the Redeemer. This statue is made of travertine and is more than 18 feet tall. Christ blesses with one hand, and He holds the instrument of our salvation in His other hand. On Thursday, we celebrated the Exultation of the Holy Cross so that we could have the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the Cross in the history of sal-vation and in our own personal salvation. In Numbers 21, we hear how the Israelites sinned by complaining against God. And why did they complain? They were not content with the will of God. And so they were punished (because sin de-serves punishment). When Moses asked forgiveness (as a mediator between God and the people), God told him to fashion a bronze serpent on a pole so that when the Israelites looked at it, they would be healed. This is a prefiguration of Christ — the one mediator between God and man — who is raised up on the Cross to save us from eternal punishment (and to give us healing grace). This is a major reason Catholic churches use a crucifix (Christ on the cross) instead of a plain cross. How do we as Catholic Christians participate in the “lifting up” of Christ? Philippians 2 tells us how: obedience to the will of God; obedience like the obedience of Jesus Christ to the will of the Father. But what is the will of God? Simply put: God’s will is love. When we talk about the will of God, however, we must make distinctions. There is such thing as the “permissive will” of God, which refers both to (1) many natural evils such as storms and earthquakes, but is seen in a particular way in death; and in (2) His respect for human freedom, even if that freedom is abused to harm others. Death is not a punishment for sin but rather a natural consequence for sin. Yet, Jesus willingly underwent death and has therefore taken the suffering of humanity (past, present and fu-ture) to Himself. Therefore, all suffering can have salvific value if we unite it to Him. There is also such thing as the “ordaining will” of God, which is expressed through His commands and ordinances (10 commandments and Beatitudes), but also by vocations, states in life, and His direction in major and minor life decisions. Following God’s will is essential to our salvation, so it is important to know how to discern it and how to follow it. We look to the Sacred Scriptures and to the Catholic Church to know God’s will on a moral level, but God has also given us our conscience by which we apply God’s will to concrete situations. We also look to legitimate authority, which in some way expresses God’s will. In some way, the will of the Pope and Bishops in the universal Church and in individual dioceses is a manifestation of God’s will. In some way, the will of priests (which are, ideally, informed by and in con-formity with the Catholic Church), is a manifestation of God’s will in the parish. In some way, the will of parents is a manifestation of God’s will in the home. If we are serious about holiness, of being truly in union with Jesus Christ, of following God’s will, then humility and obedience — as manifested by the Cross — are absolutely necessary. Possibly the simplest way to implement this reality in our lives is to get in the habit of asking the question: What is God’s will in this? Many times, the answer is obvious, but we merely need to ask the question. Other times, we might need to pray, consult the Sacred Scriptures, the teachings of the Church, or talk to a priest. It will not always be possible to know exactly what God’s will is, especially when we first try to get in the habit of doing this. This is why when we fail at doing God’s will, we go to confession. The Sacrament of Confession is where we get it right: the will of God and the carrying of our Cross. For we are assured by Scripture that the Son of God has come into the world — not to condemn us — but to give us eternal life.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Lowry

Lowry

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of

God, cast into Hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
