School Visioning Committee Conclusions: Our parish is blessed with numerous apostolates and efforts to evangelize, sanctify, and show mercy. All of them are important and vital. From the inception of our parish, our Christ the King grade school has formed thousands upon thousands of children and their families in the Faith and in academic studies. It is currently our largest evangelical outreach, with the exception of our weekend Masses. The school greatly impacts everything we do; as such, it demands our constant attention and care. I am proud to announce that the School Visioning Committee will present its final summations and proposals about the relationship of the parish and the school at two important overview meetings, including time for Q&A, on this Wed., Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. and also on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. Everyone in the parish is invited to attend either of these two identical meetings, both of which will take place in the Christ the King Parish Center.

Zach Tucker’s Ordination: Zach Tucker, son to Patrick and Sue Tucker and a son of our parish, entered the seminarian program of the Archdiocese of Omaha in the fall of 2014. During his time as a Focus missionary to collegians, he discerned his vocation to priesthood. He attended Kenrick-Glennon Seminary for two years of pre-theology and entered the theologate program at the North American College in Rome in 2016. Zach will be ordained a transitional deacon on Thursday, October 3 in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. On June 6 of 2020, he will be ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Omaha. We are so humbled and excited to have a member of our parish enter the diaconate and take a definitive step closer to eventual priesthood. Please pray for Zach, from now through his ordination to the transitional diaconate (and beyond, of course). Please consider praying a novena (nine consecutive days of prayer) for him from this Tuesday, Sept. 24 through Oct. 2. Moreover, please consider sending him a congratulatory card with spiritual bouquets, well wishes, and/or gifts. Zach’s mailing address is: Zach Tucker, c/o North American College 00120 Vatican City State Rome, Italy Europe.

Fall Festival!: Our annual Fall Festival is TODAY, Sunday, Sept. 22 from 12:30 p.m.-4 p.m. It is always a wonderful, joy-filled time for all ages. Enjoy great food, desserts and snacks, games, music, and rides. We appreciate all of the generous underwriters, donors and volunteers who make the festival possible, and all of you who will attend. Because of the festival, the 11:30 a.m. Confessions and 12 noon Mass today, Sunday, Sept. 22, are CANCELED. Please plan to attend another of our many Masses that day or on the vigil the evening before. We are hoping for a record number of attendees for the festival this year; hope to see you there! Please pray for clement weather.

Athletic Director Wanted: Do you see the value of sports for our parish children and youth? Are you well organized and self-motivated? Christ the King is looking for a part-time Athletic Director who helps to develop, maintain and support all athletic programs in the parish with the support of the parish and the Christ the King Sports’ Club. If interested, please submit an application or resume to Fr. Cook at [email protected].

Relics: The first class relics (parts of the body) of Ss. Cosmas & Damian will be available for veneration in the church on the saints’ feast day, this Thursday, Sept. 26. Ss. Cosmas & Damian were early Christian martyrs who were not only physicians but healers. Ask their heavenly intercession for all types of healing.

From the Pastor Fr. Cook

Seminarian Zach Tucker

Christ the King News and Events

Be Not Afraid Hour for Sunday, September 29: Believing in God is Rational: The reflection shared by Chris Mueller asks; Does it make sense to believe in God? Human beings naturally seek something bigger than themselves. We have a church that has given us the public truths that link with the plan of God. May we pray to be open to the message and existence of God to reach our hearts. This hour includes praying the Rosary as well as the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola draws us into a deeper relationship with God so we may better know, love and serve God in the unique situation God has placed us. An opportunity to participate in the Spiritual Exercises will be offered in the month of October at Christ the King. If you are interested, please contact Kathy Kemler at [email protected] or 402.216.4023.

School Visioning Committee Presentation: The school visioning committee will be conducting a special presentation in the Christ the King Parish Center on Wednesday, September 25th from 6:30—8:00 pm, and again on Thursday, September 26th from 7:00—8:30 pm. The presentations will be the same on both days and all parishioners are encouraged to attend. During each presentation, the school visioning committee will provide an overview of all the school and parish related information they’ve gathered over the past year and will also provide feedback related to the surveys taken by school parents this last school year. A brief question and answer period will follow each presentation.

Eyes on Education

Faith, Foundations and Fun in First Grade: Meet Mrs. Fuqua First graders are very busy! They like to get up and move as often as possible. Math and Literacy centers are two ways they do this. Students read each day during D.E.A.R. time, and they enjoy sitting in special seats such as in a laundry basket or on a beanbag chair. First grade students understand early in the school year that while we don’t all get the same, we all get what we need. Tayloring learning to what the stu-dents need keeps them moving forward and helps them gain confidence. They are truly a community of learners helping each other grow in faith and academ-ics. Each day begins by offering special intentions, followed by a prayer chosen by the class prayer lead-er for the week, and the pledge of allegiance. They pray throughout the day including lunchtime, after re-cess, and at dismissal. The class often talks about how Jesus works in their lives and how lucky they are to get to pray at school. First grade students report that their favorite times of the day are the fun spelling activities, moving to the English jingles, DEAR time, writing stories, and learning new things. Brainbreaks with GoNoodle are a hit as well. Classroom centers are designed to reinforce skills. They are hands-on activities and are set up for students to use inde-pendently. Most centers allow for self-checking. Us-ing an app called Seesaw, students can take a photo of their completed center and submit it. Once ap-proved, the posting is shared with their parents, keep-ing the school – home connection. First graders see significant growth in reading. They read when their work is finished as well as at DEAR time. Students are challenged with books to share in a book-club style environment, as well as utilizing Take Home Readers. Being submerged into this envi-ronment helps students find the enjoyment of reading. Parents often report that they are finding their child, on their own, reading to a younger sibling. Mrs. Fuqua is always looking for new ways to present ma-terial. Technology offers many new ways to work in every subject and enhance learning. She uses Tech-nology in the classroom on a daily basis. Mrs. Fuqua says, “The children we are educating today will be the leaders of our communities in the future. I need to make sure that I am doing all I can to prepare them for what their world may look like.”
