George’s Weekly Message: The Sacrifice of the Mass and Reverence During his ministry, and before his sacrifice on the cross, his crucifixion and death, Jesus solemnly talked about offering himself for our salvation. Jesus categori- cally told his disciples that he will offer his body for us as real food, “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink” (Jn 6:55); and in order to have life in him, we need to eat his body and drink his blood (John 6:53ff). John chapter six is one book that recorded exhaustively the solemn declaration of Jesus Christ on the Eucha- rist. The Church over the years situates the Mass as the solemn sacrifice that not only reenacts Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross at Calvary, but that which brings to reality the offering of His body as food and His blood as drink. The Mass therefore, is that solemn occasion that we are all invited to be fed with the body and blood of Christ. This is a humbling invitation. It is an epitome of God’s love for us. Think of the words of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when she was con- ceived with Jesus; she said, “For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness” (Luke 1:48). Because we are called not just to carry Jesus in us, but to consume him in spite of our lowliness and sinfulness should be humbling. This should evoke reverence to- wards God and the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist at Mass and always. For in our sinfulness we have been called to share in Jesus’ body and blood. The prayers of the Mass partly remind us of our sinfulness and the need to acknowledge this as we approach God’s throne of grace. From the beginning of the Mass, we are invited to acknowledge our sins and sinfulness with the Confiteor (penitential rite); some of the Collect (opening prayer) asks God for pardon, and to bring us aright to keeping God’s command; the Preface to the Eucharistic prayers ask for forgiveness and shows how God forgives our sins – “For through his paschal mys- tery, he accomplished the marvelous deed, by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death” (Preface I of Sundays in Ordinary Time); “for by his birth he brought renewal to humanity’s fallen state, and by his suffering, canceled out our sins” (Preface IV of Sundays); “For when your children were scattered afar by sin, through the Blood of your Son and the power of the Spirit, you gathered them again to yourself” (Preface VII of Sundays); the priest washes and cleanse his hand praying “Lord wash away my iniquities and cleanse me from my sins.” The Mass in general reminds us of our sinfulness and unworthiness to par- take in this meal; yet we are invited; yet we are asked to participate; yet we consume Jesus the perfection of holiness; and even in the very act of receiving Jesus our sins are cleansed – “As we eat his flesh that was sacrificed for us, we are made strong, and as we drink his Blood that was poured out for us, we are washed clean” (Preface I of the Eucharist); as a matter of fact, the words of consecration, “The Blood … which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins” reechoes this. The least we could do is to show reverence to Jesus while participating in the liturgy of the sacrifice. A lack of reverence and carelessness or carefreeness either re- veals our pride or a lack of understanding of what we are called to participate in. Being reverential does not in any way show that we are holy, but it rather indicates that we are very much aware of our unworthiness, and appreciative of the privilege to have been “held worthy to be in your presence and minister to you” (Eucharistic Prayer II). As individual worshippers, we should not take for granted God’s desire to feed us and strengthen us on our faith Journey. One way to show that we are not is on how much reverence we give to Jesus Christ at Mass, and the level of preparation we put into actively participating in this wonderful banquet. A reverence that becomes evident in all our liturgical actions and gestures. Mission Appeal: Next weekend we will be hosting the Mission Appeal for the benefit of the mission works of Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette. Some of us are mis- sionaries by going, others are missionaries by giving. We are being asked to be mis- sionaries by giving. And so, as they speak to us, we ask you to be part of the mission of the Church by generously giving to support the missionary works of La Salette. Mailing address: 413 S. Fr. George’s Weekly Message: The Sacrifice of the Mass and Reverence During his ministry, and before his sacrifice on the cross, his crucifixion and death, Jesus solemnly talked about offering himself for our salvation. Jesus categori-cally told his disciples that he will offer his body for us as real food, “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink” (Jn 6:55); and in order to have life in him, we need to eat his body and drink his blood (John 6:53ff). John chapter six is one book that recorded exhaustively the solemn declaration of Jesus Christ on the Eucha-rist.

Think of the words of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when she was con-ceived with Jesus; she said, “For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness” (Luke 1:48). Because we are called not just to carry Jesus in us, but to consume him in spite of our lowliness and sinfulness should be humbling. The prayers of the Mass partly remind us of our sinfulness and the need to acknowledge this as we approach God’s throne of grace. From the beginning of the Mass, we are invited to acknowledge our sins and sinfulness with the Confiteor (penitential rite); some of the Collect (opening prayer) asks God for pardon, and to bring us aright to keeping God’s command; the Preface to the Eucharistic prayers ask for forgiveness and shows how God forgives our sins – “For through his paschal mys-tery, he accomplished the marvelous deed, by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death” (Preface I of Sundays in Ordinary Time); “for by his birth he brought renewal to humanity’s fallen state, and by his suffering, canceled out our sins” (Preface IV of Sundays); “For when your children were scattered afar by sin, through the Blood of your Son and the power of the Spirit, you gathered them again to yourself” (Preface VII of Sundays); the priest washes and cleanse his hand praying “Lord wash away my iniquities and cleanse me from my sins.”

STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE Even though we are told that if we seek the Lord, we shall not want, in the second reading St. Paul reminds us that, thus blessed by the Lord, the good steward should “give thanks to God the Father always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” From our youth: Jacob-mowed the lawn; Evan-helped in the garden; Akira-cleaned her room; Nathan-helped in the garden; Jonah-collected the eggs. Thanks kids, keep up the good deeds & contributions.

The flowers in OLLH Church this weekend were generously donated in memory of Barb Mazure by Ray Mazure and family.

Next weekend, August 25-26, Fr. Sebastian Michael Flory from the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette will be here to preach the annual parish summer mission ap-peal at Holy Name of Mary. Having brought the fullness of Life to our world when He rose from the dead, Jesus sent his disciples to share this life with all creation. “They went forth and preached every-where” (Mk 16:20). The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette minister to people of every race, language, culture, and way of life—beginning at the La Salette Shrine in France where our Blessed Mother appeared in 1846. Her final words, “Well my children, you will make this known to all my people,” echo Jesus’ Gospel mandate. It is little wonder that the La Salette Congregation has always been mission orientated. When called upon by the Vatican to preach the Gospel in foreign lands, they eagerly responded. This spirit brought them to mission in 27 countries, espe-cially among the poor in Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Haiti, India, Madagascar, Myanmar, and the Philippines. With your cooperation, the Missionaries of La Salette can continue to provide spiritual and financial assistance to these mission countries as they bring God’s reconciling message to the poor.

Holy Name of Mary Parish is accepting applications for a part time Bookkeeper. Qualified and interested persons may send their resume by August 31st to [email protected].
