The Pastor’s Corner We have had a really exciting few weeks at SMSJ! I love all of the momentum! The cleaning of the building has made quite a difference. It has really added a lot to the entrance and side of the church. There were some before and after pictures shared in the bulletin and it really helps you see the difference. There has also been wonderful changes in the landscaping from the hard work of Fr. Jason,Tony Losekamp and John Grusenmeyer. We also had Totus Tuus two weeks ago. The children enjoyed a week of learning about their faith and catechism through music, plays, craft and so much more. There were many fun events and the facilitators of the week long camp were really wonderful with the children. More great news comes this fall when as we get ready for St. Edmund Campion Academy to fill our school building at SMSJ. I’m excited to be able to have the students in the building and on the grounds. They will be joining us for daily Mass and confessions and we will be able to work with the children to become servers at these Masses. Last Saturday we had our Summer Celebration. Again, many hands were needed to make this happen. I am so grateful to Mary Mathers, Tony Brueneman, and all of our volunteers for their hard work. We can’t have such a fun celebration without all of the parishioners, friends and families that made this such a successful event. Amen? Amen! TWELFTH SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME

TWELFTH SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME

God’s grace brings us into the inner life of the Holy Trinity, into the exchange of love between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It makes us capable of living in God’s love and of acting on the basis of this love.

Grace is infused in us from above and cannot be explained in terms of natural causes (supernatural grace). It makes us—especially through Baptism—children of God and heirs of heaven (sanctifying or deifying grace). It bestows on us a permanent disposition to do good (habitual grace). Grace helps us to know, to will, and to do everything that leads us to what is good, to God, and to heaven (actual grace). Grace comes about in a special way in the sacraments, which according to the will of our Savior are the preeminent places for our encounter with God (sacramental grace). Grace is manifested also in special gifts of grace that are granted to individual Christians (charisms) or in special powers that are promised to those in the state of marriage, the ordained state, or the religious state (graces of state). ~ YOUCAT question 339

What does God’s grace do to us?

Quote for the Week

Meet the saintsSt. Irenaeus(130-202) - Feast Day June 28

The Church is fortunate that Irenaeus was involved in many of its controversies in the second century. He was a student, well trained, no doubt, with great patience in investigating, tremendously protective of apostolic teaching, but prompted more by a desire to win over his opponents than to prove them in error.

As bishop of Lyons he was especially concerned with the Gnostics, who took their name from the Greek word for “knowledge.” Claiming access to secret knowledge imparted by Jesus to only a few disciples, their teaching was attracting and confusing many Christians. After thoroughly investigating the various Gnostic sects and their “secret,” Irenaeus showed to what logical conclusions their tenets led. These he contrasted with the teaching of the apostles and the text of Holy Scripture, giving us, in five books, a system of theology of great importance to subsequent times. Moreover, his work, widely used and translated into Latin and Armenian, gradually ended the influence of the Gnostics.

The circumstances and details about his death, like those of his birth and early life in Asia Minor, are not at all clear.

+ A GOSPEL REFLECTION +MATTHEW 10: 26-33

by Father Jason Williams

“Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

The weeks of Ordinary Time make up the great season of discipleship within the liturgical calendar. These are the months in which we have the opportunity to carefully move through the Scriptures, discovering who Jesus is and what he does. As we come to know Jesus, we begin to love him; loving him, we cannot help but follow him. Today Jesus encourages us to bear witness to the Kingdom of God among us, to bear witness, that is, to the presence of Christ himself.

Jesus is fully aware of the challenge that it is to follow him in this fickle world, and out of love for us, he reminds us that we have nothing to fear. God is watching over us, guiding us in his providential, paternal love. The world wants us to think that it’s not worth the effort to follow Christ, that we will miss out on things, that the suffering of the Cross will be too much for us to bear. And it would be, except that Jesus will always be at our side offering to carry the burden with us. What an opportunity we have today to ask ourselves if we trust in that promise of divine love!

May God grant us his grace in this holy season that we may have the courage to proclaim the Gospel, to announce in the world that Jesus is Lord and Savior. May his encouragement afford us the confidence to bear witness to the truth of God’s saving love in our families and in our workplaces. May the Lord’s words resound in our hearts, “Do not be afraid!”
