Sing to the L , praise the L ,

for he has rescued the life of the poor. — Jeremiah 20:13

ENTHUSIASM AND GRAMMAR There is a good reason that the writings of St. Paul don’t show up as examples in grammar textbooks. Today’s reading is a case in point. It begins with one of those long Pauline run on sentences that leave lectors gasping for breath. So what? Take a closer look at how Paul’s fervor for his subject matter derails the grammar. There is something admirable about being so caught up in his convictions that the words cannot come fast enough to express them, much less in an orderly fashion. Scripture scholars usually take this grammatical ineptness as a sign of a passage’s early importance in the Christian community, something they were so ardent about that their language never got refined. What leaves us in this condition? Re-telling the plot line of an action movie or the play-by-play of a sporting event? When was the last time any of us was so excited by our faith in Christ that we were left grasping for words, stumbling over our own errors in speech? It may be bad grammar, but it is an excellent way to inspire others with the message of Christ!

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Today’s gospel has a dominant theme, which is fear. Jesus repeats the words: “Do Not Be Afraid”, for three times and thirteen times all in all in the entire gospel account. We all know some of the first statements that came from the mouth of the late Pope John Paul II, when he first stepped out on the balcony after he had been chosen to be the Pope in 1978. He said, “Praised be Jesus Christ!” and the next words he said were “Do Not Be Afraid!” The words: “Do Not Be Afraid”, occur in the Bible for more than 365 times. Wow! You know what? In a year there are 365 days and these are

good reminders for us that every single day of the year, God assures us not to be afraid and more. ‘Be not afraid’ because Jesus Himself was brave enough to face the scribes and pharisees, Pontius Pilate, the chief priest and all His accusers with a clean heart and strong conviction. And so we should not be afraid especially in proclaiming our faith in God in words and a life that is lived according to the values and demands of the gospel. Jesus addresses the three basic fears that human beings have, the fear of truth, the fear of death and the fear of unworthiness. A story was told about a Sunday school teacher who ended her Bible story by asking questions of her pupils. “Why, do you think, does God love us all so very much?” she asked. There was a momentary silence as the children wrinkled their little brows and ‘thought hard’ for a proper answer of the question, “Why does God love us so very much?” Suddenly little Johnny’s hand shot up. And without the slightest doubt about the correctness of his answer he blurted: “Because He has only one of each of us.” Only one of each us! And so therefore we are loved by God not because we are lovable or handsome and beautiful, but because God is so good and He has only one of each us. We should not be afraid because, as somebody had said, take courage and be full of confidence because God is always with us. We are under His powerful and paternal protection. God Bless You All! Fr. Innocent Subiza

Giggle: A man visited a therapist because he had a fear of monsters living under his bed. The man had been seeing his doctor for months. Every time he would come in, the doctor would ask, “Have you made any progress?” Every time the man would say “No.” The man decided to go and see another doctor. When he went back to his first doctor, the doctor asked, “Have you made any progress?” He said, “Yes! I am feeling all better now!” The doctor asked, “What happened?” The man said, “I went to another doctor and he cured me in one session!” The doctor asked, “What did he tell you?” The man said, “He just told me to cut off all four legs of my bed and leave no space for the monsters!”

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J.
