Hello Neighbours! I’m honoured and excited to have been elected President of our Tuxedo Park Community Association. I’ve been a resident of Tuxedo Park for approximately 4 years and I love our diverse and vibrant community.

In 2006, I left a 10-year career in the oil and gas industry in order to use my passion for business to help end poverty and create prosperity for ALL people. Th is journey has led me across the globe and across our province in search of answers. What I’ve discovered is the solutions lie closer to home. Th ey are right here in our neighbourhood, Tuxedo Park. Finding them is only hindered by our ability and willingness to connect.

For me, this is the role I believe our community association can play. It can serve as a hub where we connect and discover how to take better care of each other. Our neighbours in need should be able to rely on us when times are tough. With government cutbacks, an aging population and an unstable global economy, the need for a strong community association is on the rise.

Th is is what I believe, but our team wants to know what you believe. In May we will be

New Patients Always Welcome!

In March Tuxedo Park Community Association had our annual AGM. It was very well attended, thank you to everyone that came out and supported our community. We now have a full board, and as you read in Tammy’s message we have a new President and Vice-President. I also would like to say thank you to Gus our outgoing President – his ability to respect the past and also embrace future change is second to none.

I will be adding a “Volunteer” page to our website (tuxedoparkcommunity.ca). We need everyone’s help. Our community MUST fundraise immediately, and we also must limit expenses – so that means tapping into our community even more. If you can help trim hedges at the hall, assist with fundraising events, door knock during our membership drive, off er your business expertise, print fl yers – anything! We can use it right now. We are in full court press mode, we need as many people’s help to raise some funds, improve our aging hall, and support community initiatives that better our community.

Please watch for updates on our Strategic Plan, Fundraising initiatives and social activities. We are beginning the planning for our biggest event of the year, our Canada Day celebrations. Mark it in your calendars!

And don’t be shy – if you have any questions or ideas email me [email protected]

Special thanks to Gus BarronAs a resident of Tuxedo Park and active member of our commu-

nity association, I would like to invite you to pass on your thanks and appreciation to outgoing President, Gus Barron.

Gus has provided even guidance over his terms as President, and has been instrumental in the rejuvenation process that every volun-teer-run organization needs.

Those of you who know Gus un-derstand that he is a compassionate, straight-talking, constructive person who does what he does to serve the community, and not himself.

I have not been in the community long enough to document his contri-butions or tell the good stories. Your thanks, jokes, anecdotes or photos are welcome.

I ask you to call me at 403.277.8689, text me at 403.860.4275, email me at [email protected], or drop a note by mail. I will pull things together for a future event. Watch this space!

Community Membership UpdateHi there, spring is springing and I would like to update our mem-

bers on changes to our membership operations.Change in Annual Fees

At the last Annual General Meeting, the membership ratified changes in membership fees. Single memberships have gone to $10 and Family memberships to $20. Memberships now run for one year from date of purchase, which makes the renewal process less onerous for our volunteers. Membership has its privileges, and membership fees help us fund our programs and operations. Membership Now Online

We have recently converted our membership database from paper-based to an Internet-based system. This provides us with increased security and additional features. With our membership application, we can track interests and volunteer opportunities, and manage the opt-in process for email communications. Your privacy is assured, and we will never use our membership data outside of community basis.

You may check the status of your membership by visiting our web-site at www.tuxedoparkcommunity.ca or by going to the following link...https://www.compusim.com/tpca/meminfo.php. Simply enter the phone number you used and the system will send an email mes-sage to the email address used on the membership application. If you

President’s Message, continued from page 3knocking on your doors to listen to your vision for Tuxedo Park and to ask you a question.

What can our community association do to help make your lives better?

We hope you will open your doors to us with kindness, love and creative ideas and we hope that you will join our association. One of our fi rst tasks as a Board is to update our strategic plan. In order for us to do this eff ectively, we need to learn how we can best be of service to you.

If you are eager to share your dreams for our community, please don’t wait for us to show up at your door. Consider attending our next meeting on May 9th at 7:30 pm in the basement of our hall. Our community social worker will be in attendance. She can help us mobilize so that we can better meet each other’s needs.

In closing, I fi rstly would like to extend a warm thank-you to Gus Barron, our Past President, for his years of service. I’ve learned a lot from Gus. Having a chance to continue to learn from him is one of the reasons I’m really excited about this opportunity to serve our community as President. Th ank you Gus!

Secondly, our entire community owes a HUGE debt of gratitude to Kelley Sandburg and Bev Schlage. Th ey have been active members of our community association since the 1940s. I have no doubt that we wouldn’t even have a community association if it wasn’t for their dedication. Th ey may no longer be on our Board of Directors, but they will always be an inspiration and a part of the heart and soul of our association. Our new Board has HUGE shoes to fi ll. Th ank you Kelley and Bev!!!

Finally, I’m grateful for our committee chairs, our members, our volunteers, our long-time members that regularly attend our meetings on the fi rst Th ursday of every month, Harley Shouldice our Hall Manager and our newly elected Board of Directors. I feel blessed to be a part of such a talented team. With your help neighbours, I know together we can do great things.

To share with me directly your creative ideas for our community, feel free to call me at 403-831-4503, email me at [email protected] or invite me over for coff ee.

I look forward to getting to know you better and doing my part to make our community stronger!

Membership DriveWith the help of some dedicated volunteers, I intend to conduct

a door-to-door campaign in May and June. Research has proven that residents respond better to a direct approach at the doorstep. I hope that you will welcome us at your door and share your concerns and join or renew your membership. If you would like to volunteer to help, please call me at 403.277.8689, text me at 403.860.4275 or email me at [email protected].

Thank you for your continued support. With your help, I would like to see our membership represent all segments of our community, and be an effective voice of the needs of all of our residents.

Alderman’s Message by Gian-Carlo Carra

A happy May to my Tuxedo Park neighbours! A special thanks goes out to the slate of volunteers who stepped up to form the new Board at your AGM in March as well as to the outgoing Board for their years of service.

May 31 marks the official start of the campaign blackout period and my communications will shift from ‘Elected Official’ to ‘Candidate’.

Together, we have made great progress in Tuxedo Park. Initiatives such as the drainage study for storm water in the community, the in-troduction of stricter rules on home based massage parlors and work-ing to create a proper main street on Centre Street and Edmonton Trail are some examples. Exciting things are happening in Tuxedo Park!

Rosemont School NewsRosemont School is a busy place at any time of the year. In the last

two months of the school year, things really ramp up! While we have just completed a four-week residency with a visual artist, the coming months see us working with Decidedly Jazz DanceWorks, finishing up our yoga residency and embarking on swimming lessons. Numer-ous field trips are planned including the Leighton Art Centre, Telus Spark Science Centre, Calgary Zoo and Glenbow Museum.

I would like to congratulate the Rosemont School Council on being recognized with the Award of Merit from the Alberta School Council’s Association! Our School Council, in concert with the Rose-mont Fundraising Society, enhances the school community in many ways. The partnership between home and school is critical in the edu-cation of our students and we are proud of the incredible work done on behalf of students at Rosemont School!

ready for summer? There is nothing like taking a dip in a local outdoor pool. The wa-

ter, the sun, the gathering of friends and neighbors…it’s the only way to soak up summer sun. Tucked away in the quiet NW community of Highwood, you will find the Highwood Outdoor Pool, where there is something for everyone to get excited about. The pool offers a num-ber of summer activities via day camps, lane swim, private rentals, pool parties, Red Cross swim lessons, and the friendly family favorite public swimming! Highwood Outdoor Pool is extending a warm wel-come to all surrounding communities to come on out and give us a try this summer. The 2013 season is June 15th to Sept. 2.

Information on our programs may be found at www.highwood-outdoorpool.com

Newsletter Carriers Needed! $$$Want to earn some easy money while helping out your Tux-

edo Park community?Canada Post letter carrier routes do not always follow commu-

nity boundaries. This can causes lots of problems when it comes to newsletter distribution. We have solved this problem by paying local area residents to deliver the newsletter to the areas where we can’t use Canada Post. Unfortunately our current carrier is unable to continue their routes.

This opportunity is perfect for a healthy, retired senior, a stay-at-home mom whose children are at school most of the day, a responsible teenager, a group wanting to raise funds or anyone aged 14 or older who just wants to earn some extra cash.

We have around 900 newsletter copies that need to be delivered, ten times per year, and we pay up to 15 cents per copy. The aver-age person can deliver around 80 - 100 copies per hour and earn the equivalent of between $12 - $15 per hour. Nice money for walking around the neighbourhood - sort of a easy-going fitness program that pays you!

The newsletters would be dropped off at your door, usually the last Tuesday of the month and need to be delivered within the next 10 days. Maps and instructions will be provided. If you are inter-ested please contact Shannon at 403-992-4142.

National Preparedness Week May 5 to 11 2013

What kinds of natural disasters can occur in Calgary? If you said “none”, you’d be mistaken. Many Calgarians think

natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and tornadoes happen in other places. While we may not be subjected to huge su-perstorms like Sandy or Hurricane Katrina, we have our own poten-tial problems.

As we head into spring, we are also heading into flooding season. In the spring of 2005, about 40,000 homes in Calgary suffered flood damage. More than 1500 Calgarians were evacuated in a state of lo-cal emergency. Even if you live in an area on higher ground, you may still experience flooding though basement seepage, storm water backup and sewage backup. Certain types of flood damage are often not covered by insurance policies – you should be aware of how your insurance policy covers flooding.

The Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) encour-ages Calgarians to be prepared for any emergency. Some of the things you can do include:

• Know the risks. For example, flooding is most common mid-May to July, but can occur at any time of year.

• Plan for an evacuation in the event you have to leave your home.

• Ensure you have a 72-hour kit stocked and ready to go. A 72-hour kit is supplies to support you and your family for 72 hours (3 days) in an emergency situation.

• Have a family plan. The most common source of stress during an emergency is not knowing where your loved ones are. Know how to contact everyone in your family.

CEMA invites you to learn more about how you can get prepared at Disaster Alley, a fun and FREE family event! Disaster Alley show-cases first responders and agencies that help in emergencies. Disaster Alley is a great chance to get up close and personal to representatives – and their equipment! – from the Calgary Fire Department, the Calgary Police Service, STARS, Alberta Health Services, HAWCs he-licopter, ENMAX, ATCO, Calgary Transit, and more! Disaster Alley is Sunday, May 5 from 11am to 3pm, at McMahon Stadium (east parking lot). To learn more about preparedness, visit www.calgary.ca/cema. We’re prepared - are you?
