    Theories of Democratic Teaching

    (Rudolf Dreikurs) Pupils need MOTIVATION = Belong + Accepted

    Four Mistaken Goals:

    Seeking attention

    Gaining power

    Taking Revenge

    Displaying inadequacy

    Teacher models the act of democracy, provides teaching environment thatsupports the sense of belonging, provides lessons with social interest in

    mind. Setting of the rules together as a class.

    Encourage pupils who display inadequacy.

    Provide logical consequences to the mistaken goals.

    Build good relationship between teacher and students.

    Situation: The Attention Seeker Alvin is an attention seeker who always interrupts in the middle of the

    lesson by talking to his friends or walking around from one place to

    another. Miss Fressie believes that he does that, just to gain attentionfrom both the teacher and the other classmates. Thus, what can MissFressie do?

    Strategy: Miss Fressie asks Alvin to stop talking and walking during thelesson.

    Method: Logical Consequences

    If he does not stop doing so, Alvin has to bring his chair and sit in front sothat Miss Fressie can control his movement from time to time.

    Alvin will bere-located to different group instead of being with his friends.

    Result: Alvin might stop his misbehaviours and start to pay attentionto the lesson.

    Kounin). The Ripple Effect- the spread of desists.

    Withitness ability of teachers to know what is going on in

    the classroom at all times. Momentum Teacher gets things started promptly and keeps

    thing moving.

    Smoothness Transitions seem to flow with no abrupt changes.

    Group alerting System to getting student attention and

    clarifying expectations. Overlapping teacher who can manage several things at one

    time.

    Enjoyable & challenging teacher is enthusiastic, students aremore interested.

    Situation: Trifle Noises Miss Mariam is writing on the board the main points of the

    lesson and asking the pupils to copy them down. However, it

    seems like the pupils are not only working with their hands,but also with their mouths. It begins to be noisier and noisierby time and there this particular voice who makes it a bitannoying. What should Miss Mariam do?

    Strategy: Call out the names of the pupils who are involved inthe chit-chatting and ask them to work quietly.

    Method : Withitness.

    Result: Pupils may halt their chit-chatting for a while. Thepupils will become aware that the teacher does know them welleven without looking at them.

    embarrassing them.

    The appropriate usage of the I-messages instead of You-messages.

    As a teacher I possess tremendous power to make a child's life miserableor joyous.I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration.I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. Ginott.

    Situation: Arguments among pupils During a reading lesson, Mr Teo discovers that two pupils are

    talking with high tones. He has to stop the reading session and

    asks the pupils what the problem is. These two pupils arehaving arguments and it has to be stopped before things getworse.

    Strategy: Get the two pupils to stop and try to use the I-messages to solve the problem.

    Method : I-messages:

    Ibelieve that the reading session will not end without this argument endsalso. I need the two of you to apologise to each other. Alright, I wouldlove to have one of you to start reading the sentences.

    Result: Pupils stop their arguments and Mr Teo gets thereading session back on track.
