Tutorial 9:Executing Processes – Project Integration Management Project Quality Management
Objectives:1. Describe project integration management executing tasks and
outputs2. Explain project quality management executing tasks and outputs
Students are encouraged to prepare their draft answer before class, as this will help them to discuss the questions and answers during the tutorial session.
1. Using the template below, describe the key executing processes and outputs of these processes for the project management knowledge areas indicated.

2. Describe the practices that should be followed in directing and managing project execution. Why are deliverables such an important output of project execution? What are some of the typical problems that project teams face during project execution?
The practices include the following:Coordinate planning and execution
During project execution, many different pieces of work are being carried out and the project manager needs to be like the conductor of an orchestra – directing and guiding each piece of work so that it aligns with the project plan

Develop and use soft skills
Use soft skills to motivate project team, lead by example and be a good role model (especially in keeping with time and quality), solve problems and resolve conflicts
Provide a supportive organizational culture
Provide support for the project team by having in place procedures, templates, standards – things which the project team will need for their work
Break the rules when needed
Be ‘organizationally’ responsible – date to break rules if the outcome is for the good of the organization
Capitalize on product, business and application area knowledge
Impart knowledge to the project team and use expertise to make important decisions
Use project execution tools and techniques
Adopt a methodology and use project management software for smoother project execution
Deliverables are an important output of project execution because customers and other stakeholders often focus on receiving deliverables, especially products and services created.
Typical problems during project execution The project sponsor and/or other senior managers are not very
supportive of the project Project stakeholders, such as people who would use the products and
services the project is attempting to create, are not sufficiently involved in project decision-making
The project manage is inexperienced in managing people, working in a particular organization, or understanding the application area of the project
The project objectives/scope are unclear Estimates for time and cost goals are unreliable or unrealistic Business needs/technology changes have impacted the project People working on the project are incompetent or unmotivated There are poor conflict-management procedures Communications are poor Suppliers are not delivering as promised
3. What is quality assurance and how does it affect project execution? What is benchmarking and how can benchmarks assist in

performing quality assurance? Describe typical benchmarks associated with a polytechnic.
Quality assurance includes all the activities related to satisfying the relevant quality standards for a project and continuously improving quality
It affects execution by helping everyone focus on quality and not just rushing through completion of work (continual quality improvement).
Benchmarking is the process of generating ideas of quality improvements by comparing specific project practices or product characteristics to those of other projects or products within or outside of the performing organization.
Benchmarking helps in generating ideas for quality improvements
Benchmarks associated with a polytechnic Entry criteria Course available Staff-student ratio Number of graduates per year Teaching resources facilities
